Only help if you can be helpful

Hey All, A topic has come up of late in the IRC channel in regards to the general feel of the forums and the community that supports them. Things have progressed further than I would have liked with out this being addressed more publicly because I would much rather have snubbed this out sooner rather than later.. but I have been busy. Here is the general rule I would like people to follow: Wheaton's Law "Don't be a dick." Those of you from the IRC channel know that this is the only rule I ask people in there to follow and we generally have a good and lively time chatting about all manner of things. This is basic rule that just about everyone understands and I am going to expand it to the forums from here moving forward. If you can not help people in a helpful and polite manner then I simply ask you to stop. Now I generally take a back seat to moderating the forums as I like to participate in the suggestions forum fairly heavily at times and would rather do so as a forums user than a moderator. But I am also fairly well known for being the person who constantly puts their foot down and so I am stepping up and doing so on here. If you find yourself unable to respond to a message politely then I ask that you do not respond. This mostly focuses on the increasing level of hostility found within the Suggestion forum as well as the Server forum. I do not care if this is the 30th some odd time you have seen someone make the same suggestion. Or even if the new post on an older topic is one entry above the old one. I expect the members of this forum to respond politely to the user, new or old, and point to the older topic if it applies and even go the extra step to suggest they either add in new information or to summarize the outcome of the previous discussion based upon the new post's entry into it. That is what we are here for, that is why I close most topics instead of deleting them, so that they can be found and referenced down the road. The next topic is the slew of derailment attempts I have seen as of late. If you want to have fun and joke around that is what the off topic forum is for and pretty much anything goes there. I do not expect to read a suggestion thread and have to go through 3 pages of image memes people have shot back and forth. Quite simply this is a waste of my time to read and then have to clean up. Now for the summary. I am going to start taking a more active role, especially in policing the suggestion forum, and handing out warn levels to people whom I see doing this. These will be indiscriminate and applied not to just the first person who derails or is impolite on a topic or response, but to everyone whom follows the lead of that person. As I do not like doing things with out giving you all warning this post shall serve as that warning. If you have a desire to bring this topic up with me then I invite you to do so on the IRC channel. Lets raise the level of quality and grow the community. Let us not descend into the quality often found on the minecraft or league of legend forums. There is simply no need for that here. Be passionate about things, just do not be abusive.

      Offline Servers

Recently I've seen a few server listings showing up on the first page of the Servers forum that have been closed for an extended period of time, but have recently gotten a reply from a new member who didn't realize the server is offline. To help prevent this from happening in the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could use the report function on the original post of any servers that have been confirmed as offline, so that the topic may be locked. If you are the admin of a server and plan on taking the server offline, please use the report function on the original post of your topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be locked. If you are the admin of a server that has a locked topic, and would wish to bring the server back online, please use the report function on the original post of the topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be unlocked. As always, please remember to follow rule #3 of the servers forum and update your topic title to contain the version of TFC that the server is currently running. You can do so by editing the OP, and then clicking on "Use Full Editor."

  2. What are you reading?

Personally I love the absurd and I think it doesn't get better than Jeff Vandermeer for that. I just finished the 2nd book in his Southern Reach series but his masterwork really has to be City of Saints and Madmen which is truly surreal. I'm going to be carving a quote from the Southern Reach into a wall in my TFC keep. Currently I'm reading Thomas Ligotti's Songs of a Dead Dreamer which is fantastic collection of his weird fiction / supernatural horror short stories. They're good stories but I like to space them out, I feel like I'd get a lesser experience if I just plowed through the book. The Weird is a great collection of weird fiction spanning over a century and from all over the globe, I read it like a catalog of authors. All Quiet on the Western Front is a fantastic story! If you want to keep going in that thread I'd recommend reading Robert Graves' autobiography Goodbye to All That. Then watch Gallipoli (ANZAC running into the grinder without bullets for the Dardanells) and Joyeux Noel (the heart wrenchingly absurd spontaneous Christmas truce). Oh and throw in Black Adder Goes Forth to see Hugh Laurie and Rowan Atkinson exchanging a bit of gallows humor in the trenches.I recommend reading/watching those all those in a couple of weeks and you'll begin to see the effects almost immediately. Look for cynicism, a love of the absurd, emotional distance from humanity, suspicion of ideals, existential nihilism and the worship of dark gods/concepts as indicators that you're doing it right. If you have any trouble try studying the pre-war idealism and the effects new weapons technology had on these ideals. I'd also recommend humming "onward christian soldiers" to reinforce the absurdity and asking "who remembers the Armenian genocide" to reinforce the pointlessness.
  3. Fire-brick may be a real pain to produce but it is oh so important for blast furnaces and the proper storage of napalm like substances. It turns out normal brick can melt, which is why Fort Zverev looks like Hell's lobby. http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/fort-zverev
  4. Drainage Map

Oh I see, that's very different than what I was imagining. Thanks!
  5. Drainage Map

So as I understand it one of the factors affecting food flavor is the drainage map of the area in which it was grown. Is this calculated with source block's relative Y values, or the level of flowing blocks and will a source block flowing directly down have an impact? It seems like an awesome mechanic but how it functions isn't very intuitive.
  6. A use for Galena

I like the idea of lead pipes moving water. A series of lead tuyeres leading from a source block could output a flowing water block at their termination point (not at the highest flow level because people like me would trick it into producing source blocks). The position of the termination point must have a Y value less than or equal to the Y value of the source block from which the pipe started. This would allow for both horizontal movement and U shaped siphons which are both well within the realm of believablity. If the devs wanted to go nuts with plumbing, some lead plates and leather could make a hydrolic ram to push water uphill under its own inertia.Alternatively a line of up to 12 pipes leading from a barrel full of water might place no water block of any kind but spread irrigation for 4 blocks around them. The barrels water level could decay over time and in the summer months players might need to have another barrel feeding into it through another tuyere or refill it from buckets. This might be a fun and interesting way to allow some basic water movements before achieving red steel. If you want to move source blocks before getting red steel perhaps you'd need an aqueduct made from lead lined bricks. Recipe: a stone brick wall with lead single sheets all along the top row. Once placed lead lined brick blocks can be removed but never recovered.
  7. A Hard Lesson to Learn

That sound a bit like the Quest of Iranon or maybe even a bit like Celephaise. How did you end up playing minecraft in HPL's Dreamlands?
  8. pumpkins to lamps

Yeah. The jack-o-lantern and the pumpkin share all textures except for the face. Pumpkins have pumpkin_face_off and jack-o-lanterns have pumpkin_face_on and those can be assigned separate skins but that's not very helpful. At some point maybe I'll see if I can do something with png.meta files but I haven't looked into that at all yet.I'll have to try turning this resource pack on in vanilla and make myself a lamp farm.
  9. pumpkins to lamps

I was getting annoyed with the way jack-o-lanterns look as a light source so I tossed together a quick resource pack that I like better. I'm sure there are similar packs out there but this was more amusing. Anyhow its available on mygithubif any of you find the pumpkins are annoying you too. Also I guess I can just attach it to the thread. Fair credit and all, I got the basic images frompainterlypackand adjusted them in GIMP. Oh and I'm also using the SummerFields TFC 1.7.10-6 pack here. I just did the pumpkins. Those pumpkins are all me... and painterly. I've also included some images of what the lit and unlight pumpkins look like. The unlit pumpkins have a dark face and of course don't illuminate anything =P pumpkins_to_lamps.zip

  12. [0.79.15] Rhodance's "HugBox" Server [Closing May 22]

IGN: Tilhaedan Age: 27 Why this server?: 18+, seems stable from what i've seen, focus on TFC realism, looks good 2 sentence description of yourself/interests: I'm a junior web dev and CS student about to move to Austin TX. I'm a big fan of weird fiction, can talk basic philosophy, know a little russian, love the challenge of TFC and am looking for a server to join with my friends Glorric and Pwnmander.
