I'd like to suggest adding an ice room for preserving food. Players would need to forge a certain tool in order to be able to extract ice during the wintertime. They can create an underground room to place the ice blocks. Food that is placed in barrels or chests would rot at a substantially lower rate dependent on the size of room and number of ice blocks provided. The ground provides it's own insulation so ice would melt fairly slowly. This method was used in the past to help preserve food before the refrigerator was invented. Root cellars were also used to keep food longer. They worked with just the naturally cooler temperature available underground without ice. These methods can be as simple or complicated as you like.
