Only help if you can be helpful

Hey All, A topic has come up of late in the IRC channel in regards to the general feel of the forums and the community that supports them. Things have progressed further than I would have liked with out this being addressed more publicly because I would much rather have snubbed this out sooner rather than later.. but I have been busy. Here is the general rule I would like people to follow: Wheaton's Law "Don't be a dick." Those of you from the IRC channel know that this is the only rule I ask people in there to follow and we generally have a good and lively time chatting about all manner of things. This is basic rule that just about everyone understands and I am going to expand it to the forums from here moving forward. If you can not help people in a helpful and polite manner then I simply ask you to stop. Now I generally take a back seat to moderating the forums as I like to participate in the suggestions forum fairly heavily at times and would rather do so as a forums user than a moderator. But I am also fairly well known for being the person who constantly puts their foot down and so I am stepping up and doing so on here. If you find yourself unable to respond to a message politely then I ask that you do not respond. This mostly focuses on the increasing level of hostility found within the Suggestion forum as well as the Server forum. I do not care if this is the 30th some odd time you have seen someone make the same suggestion. Or even if the new post on an older topic is one entry above the old one. I expect the members of this forum to respond politely to the user, new or old, and point to the older topic if it applies and even go the extra step to suggest they either add in new information or to summarize the outcome of the previous discussion based upon the new post's entry into it. That is what we are here for, that is why I close most topics instead of deleting them, so that they can be found and referenced down the road. The next topic is the slew of derailment attempts I have seen as of late. If you want to have fun and joke around that is what the off topic forum is for and pretty much anything goes there. I do not expect to read a suggestion thread and have to go through 3 pages of image memes people have shot back and forth. Quite simply this is a waste of my time to read and then have to clean up. Now for the summary. I am going to start taking a more active role, especially in policing the suggestion forum, and handing out warn levels to people whom I see doing this. These will be indiscriminate and applied not to just the first person who derails or is impolite on a topic or response, but to everyone whom follows the lead of that person. As I do not like doing things with out giving you all warning this post shall serve as that warning. If you have a desire to bring this topic up with me then I invite you to do so on the IRC channel. Lets raise the level of quality and grow the community. Let us not descend into the quality often found on the minecraft or league of legend forums. There is simply no need for that here. Be passionate about things, just do not be abusive.

      Offline Servers

Recently I've seen a few server listings showing up on the first page of the Servers forum that have been closed for an extended period of time, but have recently gotten a reply from a new member who didn't realize the server is offline. To help prevent this from happening in the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could use the report function on the original post of any servers that have been confirmed as offline, so that the topic may be locked. If you are the admin of a server and plan on taking the server offline, please use the report function on the original post of your topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be locked. If you are the admin of a server that has a locked topic, and would wish to bring the server back online, please use the report function on the original post of the topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be unlocked. As always, please remember to follow rule #3 of the servers forum and update your topic title to contain the version of TFC that the server is currently running. You can do so by editing the OP, and then clicking on "Use Full Editor."

  1. Sult water

I can't answer your question but I am keen to try your modpack.....is it on the site that must NOT be named?
  2. Smithing takes all the fun out of this mod

I struggled with the smithing a bit and find it a bit of a pain in the ass but it is rewarding. I personally liked the old system where "close enough" netted you a slightly damaged tool. I also find that smithing is something I have to be in the mood for. My only regret with TFC is that the world is empty....I can make a bunch of stuff but who is going to buy a red steel pick from the last (and only) man on earth?
  3. WIP [TFC-0.79.29] TerraFirmaProgressivePack

I am going to guess that this modpack isn't on any of the sites which host modpacks......I am scared to even mention their names. I suppose the manual install is a good right of passage so only the worthy get to try your modpack.
  4. I shall bestir my lazy self to offer a heartfelt agreement to Will's statement......it is the best iteration of Minecraft (by far!) from a systems point of view. I can't even imagine playing vanilla MCany more (though it was brilliant for a while).
  5. TFC360

    This'd make a good server....just saying.
  6. TFC360

I have determined there is no way in HELL to find your modpack on the Curse (cursed) site. I tried any number of times to search and no dice....then I scrolled through the endless list of bloody modpacks.....nope. Your modpack sounds interesting but my mouse wheel has overheated from scrolling....cheerio.
  7. Better Forest Fires

This is very much like the idea my friend and I have discussed...it would be wonderful. One problem...trees grow idiotically fast....this should be greatly nerfed. Our server had trees taking (species dependent) from 3 to 10 weeks REAL TIME to mature.....loved it and we never came even close to running out of wood...but hey...its a procedurally generated world so just range farther afield. Thanks again for your excellent suggestion.
  8. Better Forest Fires

I have tested a fire mod that my buddy made and we have plans to try to implement it into a server...this is merely a plan at this point. I truly would sell my soul to "Ol Nick" for an accurate depiction of fire in TFC.
  9. Economy

No worries mate.....It would be very difficult to do all the buy/sell list from my server but I could tell you it is Roanoke 5 and it can accessed through Tthe Technic launcher with the platform url www.technicpack.net/api/modpack/roanoke5...please feel free to look around and copy any of our prices and ideas. The key is finding things the players WANT to buy...land, status items, political power, furniture.....resist all the whiners wanting to craft stuff so they have to grind some coin to get all the nice toys....just my thought. Hope this helps. I completely support your initiative as I reject the current game model of just trying to come up with different colored ingots....it don't grab me at all.
  10. Economy

You have an uphill battle my friend but I applaud your efforts. It was/is my objective to have a thriving economy on a server but it seems tough as heck to do. I can give you a couple things from my experience.... 1. There is simply too much stuff....ore everywhere...stupid trees that spring up overnight....dumb fruit trees that bury you in product...insane crops that grow like proverbial weeds....so how does one make an economy in this hell of plenty. We did it by making ore crazy scarce and trees that took weeks to grow.....this scarcity helped somewhat but the low player density on an eternal map makes even this measure only marginally effective in combating the hell of plenty. 2. If you have a server store for players to sell stuff to you also need something they want to buy...this is a big problem. We had it so almost everything could be sold.....peat, food, logs, cobble, ingots, minerals...I do mean almost anything. Then the tough part...what to SELL the players...we had certain things like horses, small boats, vanilla blocks and even disabled some crafting recipes so purchase was the only way to get certain items. We also sold land with a high chunk limit (250,000) and a low price (3 iron coins...this being the sale price of a stack of fir logs). Problem....no one bought into the concept...just bought 10 chunks and set a "base" up then poked away at making the banal "red steel" ingot that marked the games conclusion :/ Anyhoo I hoped this helped and wish you well on all your future endeavours..thanx for the opportunity to vent. Btw....to any potentates of TFC I hope I have not offended your excellent creation...it still is and will likely remain the best iteration of Minecraft.....period!!
  11. Thanks atila...I did some work tonight but thats enough...wonder how it happened?
  12. Looking for Whitelist, TFC Only

We have a server, Roanoke 5 that is listed here...it is modded but you can buy cheap land that protects your stuff. We are thinking about going to a whitelist too to keep the fools at bay. Please do note it is a modded server and is running our own version of TFC with different ore generation and longer tree growth times....not everyones cup 'o tea but we like it. Have fun wherever you play. http://roanoke.enjin.com/
  13. The Night

Ok so....what makes the night dangerous...answer, hostile mobs. Questions...why do we need idiotic hostile mobs popping in just because it gets dark!? I am sure this august community and the game developers can come up with something better. Hows about some ideas for dealing with the root of the problem rather than the branch.
  14. The Night

The core problem is how hostile mobs spawn....it gets dark and they pop into existence...daylight comes and they burn up and are gone. This was a clever way to introduce foes 3 years ago....now its absurd. The developers of Microcraft (oops) need to come up with something superior....a goblin village, an orc encampment, a xenophobic village, a sloth of bears, a pride of lions, bridges with attendant trolls, etc. I really laugh when folks say "we need more realistic mobs....wolves, cougars (the bitey kind, not the buy you drinks kind) but no one mentions the archaic mechanism of their introduction. Anyhow....not quite about beds but somewhat related...have a nice night all
  15. Looking for a new small 18+ vanilla TFC Server

Hello there. I am an admin on the Roanoke 5 server and we would be glad to have you join us. We are not vanilla TFC but have modified some of the basics to provide a server with more challenge than normal TFC. It isn't everyones cup of tea and we are still running build 77 but the changes made to the basic TFC are worth it....also its mainly mature players. Here's our enjin site address....glad to see you there. http://roanoke.enjin.com/
  16. Hey there.....just wanted to say there are players back on the Roanoke 5 server (well, some anyway) and we are only to happy to see more arrive. All the CustomNPC vendors are working and there is a new railway to take a ride on...see you in game.
  17. Ok so...some players have come back and others have been invited. I advise people to come back and play....if you bought land it will all be protected and you can start where you left off from...beats the heck outa starting over from scratch. In addition, though I have played several servers with different modpacks you will NEVER find a better mining model than the one on Roanoke 5....never. Hope to see you soon.
  18. Hey folks....there are a few of us back playing on Roanoke...the trade area in spawn has been restocked/emptied and new roads are springing up...also looking for people to build a railway....hope to see you on.
  19. Mob Changes

Hi there TFC community. I thought I would put my two cents in again(I must be over a buck by now with this). I am absolutely fed up with the old system for introducing mobs....it gets dark and endless numbers of boogies pop into existence only to burn up in the sunlight. This was a clever mechanic 3 years ago but surely the brains of today can do better. Merely changing the mobs to something else isn't enough....its the mechanic of introduction that is the issue. If I'm being ganked by mobs that pop into existence just because the sun goes down I don't care if its zombie or zebra....it makes little sense. All mobs need a reason for their presence, bears hanging out near towns for the garbage, a pride of lions on an equatorial savanna, skeletons infesting a swampy graveyard. More might be introduced by the presence or lack or presence of humans....goblins move into a building keying on the fact the chunk hasn't been loaded in a month and there is a player placed door.....I don't know, just ideas. Anyway, please comment and tell me I 'm full of poop. later =)
  20. Mob Changes

In fact I didn't. I assume Dunc highlighted it as it was relevant to his post.
  21. Mob Changes

    That sounds fine
  22. Mob Changes

Cut and prune as you please
  23. Nerf Water Stream Blocks

Well....I hate to say it but it was kinda fun wrangling with it (but once was enough!). It took 3 1/2 people in creative over 5 hours to fix it. It was very much like fighting a forest fire, something I am quite familiar with.
  24. Hey there ghiojo. You need to copy the modpack address from the Roanoke enjin site under the modpack links and then paste it into the add modpack portion of the technic launcher.
  25. One Single Giant Server

Despite TFC being the best incarnation by far of MC it (possibly of a necessity) continues some of its major flaws. A few thoughts..... maybe only one if I get tired.... a)The way "monsters" pop in and out just because it gets dark was a clever trick during development but it is absurd now. Many people have said they should change to more "realistic" mobs but I say this is wrong-minded as the essential flaw remains. Mobs need to have some reason to be where they are that is NOT based on light level. Most hostile mobs should spawn in defined groups with a defined purpose....pride of lions, neanderthal village, etc. Perhaps some sorta boogie man could spawn underground near ore bodies to protect it from the players. In all cases there should NOT be endless spawnings based on light level or other arbitrary criterion.. surely we are past the charms of that mechanic. Players can do way too much.... skills seems not a bad solution but there will need to be a vast difference between the work of skilled and unskilled players. Maybe without a "mining" skill you can't dig below level 100.... just a thought. No farming skill?..... not every seed you plant actually produces a result. c) Food is a joke after the first while.... this really needs to change. I am considering (alarm bells) eliminating ALL food production from our server (Roanoke 5) with the only way to obtain it is through purchase from a vendor..... mad idea but I am being driven to extremes. d)Our capacity to carry stuff is MADNESS!! And now we have bloody "vessels" to make it crazier! Personally I refuse to use the them as an aid to carrying stuff but we have players clamoring for "backpacks" to exacerbate the problem... truly I despair! Some sorta cart (ancient warfare mod has a brilliant one) is desperately needed as currently we can carry according to my calculations 83 or so TRUCKLOADS of logs!! (I work in the forest industry so this especially galls me). A wheelbarrow, a wagon, a packhorse... anything to help here would be awesome. Sorry... went a bit monkey there..... must be the altitude. I apologize if I have offended the mod-makers and thank them again for this amazing venue for playing MC. I also recognize I might be a bit off topic too so please feel free to move this where appropriate. Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
