Only help if you can be helpful

Hey All, A topic has come up of late in the IRC channel in regards to the general feel of the forums and the community that supports them. Things have progressed further than I would have liked with out this being addressed more publicly because I would much rather have snubbed this out sooner rather than later.. but I have been busy. Here is the general rule I would like people to follow: Wheaton's Law "Don't be a dick." Those of you from the IRC channel know that this is the only rule I ask people in there to follow and we generally have a good and lively time chatting about all manner of things. This is basic rule that just about everyone understands and I am going to expand it to the forums from here moving forward. If you can not help people in a helpful and polite manner then I simply ask you to stop. Now I generally take a back seat to moderating the forums as I like to participate in the suggestions forum fairly heavily at times and would rather do so as a forums user than a moderator. But I am also fairly well known for being the person who constantly puts their foot down and so I am stepping up and doing so on here. If you find yourself unable to respond to a message politely then I ask that you do not respond. This mostly focuses on the increasing level of hostility found within the Suggestion forum as well as the Server forum. I do not care if this is the 30th some odd time you have seen someone make the same suggestion. Or even if the new post on an older topic is one entry above the old one. I expect the members of this forum to respond politely to the user, new or old, and point to the older topic if it applies and even go the extra step to suggest they either add in new information or to summarize the outcome of the previous discussion based upon the new post's entry into it. That is what we are here for, that is why I close most topics instead of deleting them, so that they can be found and referenced down the road. The next topic is the slew of derailment attempts I have seen as of late. If you want to have fun and joke around that is what the off topic forum is for and pretty much anything goes there. I do not expect to read a suggestion thread and have to go through 3 pages of image memes people have shot back and forth. Quite simply this is a waste of my time to read and then have to clean up. Now for the summary. I am going to start taking a more active role, especially in policing the suggestion forum, and handing out warn levels to people whom I see doing this. These will be indiscriminate and applied not to just the first person who derails or is impolite on a topic or response, but to everyone whom follows the lead of that person. As I do not like doing things with out giving you all warning this post shall serve as that warning. If you have a desire to bring this topic up with me then I invite you to do so on the IRC channel. Lets raise the level of quality and grow the community. Let us not descend into the quality often found on the minecraft or league of legend forums. There is simply no need for that here. Be passionate about things, just do not be abusive.

      Offline Servers

Recently I've seen a few server listings showing up on the first page of the Servers forum that have been closed for an extended period of time, but have recently gotten a reply from a new member who didn't realize the server is offline. To help prevent this from happening in the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could use the report function on the original post of any servers that have been confirmed as offline, so that the topic may be locked. If you are the admin of a server and plan on taking the server offline, please use the report function on the original post of your topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be locked. If you are the admin of a server that has a locked topic, and would wish to bring the server back online, please use the report function on the original post of the topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be unlocked. As always, please remember to follow rule #3 of the servers forum and update your topic title to contain the version of TFC that the server is currently running. You can do so by editing the OP, and then clicking on "Use Full Editor."

  1. TFC and RotaryCraft

If you install the mods on your own client, you don't need permission. You only need permission when you create a mod pack that you want to share with others. This means you can put the mods together and see which problems you encounter. Things that come to mind are world generation, over powered mechanics and ambient biome temperatures. Some machines need to be cold, others need to be hot. Placing them in a biome that is either too hot or too cold can be detrimental. And since Rotarycraft has some very powerful machinery the jump from TFC's hand forged tools to Rotarycraft's high tech machinery will be huge. Try playing through the Rotarycraft tech tree with TFC installed and see if it works. Rotarycraft is a really nice mod that we were fortunate enough to get permission for to include in our HappyDiggers AMP mod pack back in Minecraft 1.6.4 before Reika even allowed his mods in mod packs in general. Rotarycraft is also a more technical mod in the sense that it's a bit more difficult to understand it's mechanics than other tech mods like Buildcraft, Industrialcraft, GregTech, EnderIO, Mekanism, etc. If you ask me that also makes it a potentially good fit for TFC. Not everything has to be easy
  2. TFC1 1.12+ port

This is great news Minecraft 1.12 offers a lot of really nice improvements for both client and server. Really happy that you want to support Sponge. We would definitely run a public server if a somewhat stable port comes out. We've never had problems with running beta releases in the past. Having an issue tracker (Github works well) so we can provide bug reports and Jenkins for faster turn around on bug fixes would be appreciated.
  3. Sorry, no. That would require players to install this mod on their clients. We have always kept our servers TFC only and expanded functionality through Bukkit plugins to keep it as easy as possible for players to join.
  4. I just noticed the official TechnodeFirmacraft server has shut down. We had planned to replace our Donor TnFC server with a FTB mod pack server. TnFC is a special mod pack. I'm considering opening a small public server instead if there are enough people interested and we can find one or two moderators willing to monitor the server. Before moving on with this I'd like to get some input first. So if you're interested in a public TnFC server, let me know.
  5. Seeking Small and Friendly Server

A lot of people think that. It's not true. Not by a long shot. In reality less than 1% of resources has been mined. A lot of people just aren't very good at finding and mining ore. So if it's not handed to them on a platter, they give up. Zooming in on the map also helps. Things look way less crowded when you get a little closer. Funny thing is. We doubled the minimum distance between towns from our previous server. It seems people just aren't happy unless they get a vast empty world to play in. But when they get exactly that, they complain that there's nobody around. We can never do it right We are going to be expanding the map in the near future, see on of my last posts in our server thread. You can already see the new landmass on Dynmap beyond the border on the left and right. So anyone thinking there aren't any resources left should be happy with that.
  6. Seeking Small and Friendly Server

TFC is slowly dying down. As a result of that you will not find servers that have 30 players online all at once. The best you get right now are a dozen or so during busy hours. That being said, you are welcome to try out the HappyDiggers servers. See link in my signature to the server's thread on this forum.
  7. Good luck with the server
  8. We have been running the current Freebie TFC and Donor TFC/TFC HC servers for a while now. The idea was to give the community a nice free server to play on while rewarding our donors with two huge TFC servers. In practice this didn't work out as we had hoped. The donor servers never reached critical mass and therefore remained mostly empty. Which is why I'm going to change things up a bit. Here's the plan: The Freebie TFC server's map will be increased to 100.000 x 30.000 blocks. The Donor TFC, Donor TFC HC and Donor TnFC servers will be replaced with a full bred TFC server which will be replaced periodically. Here's the reasoning behind these changes. Most donors wish to keep on playing with their friends in their established towns. It makes little sense to offer them a server where their friends aren't. Since we can't (and won't) offer pay to win perks, all we can do is cosmetics and grant access to other servers. So what I'd like to do is make the Freebie TFC server more appealing to try to increase player base there. The Freebie TFC server is getting a huge 100.000 x 30.000 block map. While this is smaller than the Donor servers, it should offer more playable area for TFC. The Donor servers have a huge square map. This resulted in endless frozen wastelands to the north and impenetrable jungles to the south. The new Freebie TFC map is focused around the temperate zone with a band of frozen lands and jungle. This means less space is wasted on areas that players generally aren't very active in. The new Donor server will be running the Feed The Beast Direwold20 1.10 mod pack. I've pre-generated a 12.000 x 12.000 world for this server. The reason I'm keeping this relatively small is that we are expecting fewer players on this server than on our public server, and we really want and need to encourage cooperation here. While it's a relatively light mod pack by our standards (HappyDiggers AMP), the server will face quite a heavy load on such servers when people get their bases up and running. So we'd really like for players to band together on these servers. The new Donor server will be changed about every 3 months to another mod pack. This will hopefully keep players interested. After 3 or so months, the map isn't deleted. I will save them and after having played on a bunch of other mod packs, they may return so people can continue playing there. This is also one of the reasons why the map isn't crazy huge like on the current Donor TFC servers. The new Donor server will be running Forge with Sponge. This allows us access to a lot of plugins much like we have on the current TFC servers with KCauldron. We will be starting off light though and rely on the mod pack's supplied FTB utilities for plot claiming. Players can join (or start) a team and then claim a bunch of plots. IF they add friends, those friends are allowed full access to those plots. So be careful who you add as a friend on the server. Right now all of this is still in the planning and preparation phase. So if people have questions, suggestions, concerns or objections. Now is the time to speak up. As always we really want to hear your input.
  9. We've had plenty of new ARK stuff latetely, but things have been quiet on the Minecraft front. That is about to change Question: What can use the 32GB of RAM in my PC and requires bi-daily restarts? Answer: this
  10. Can't download | 404 error

You mean the early alpha pre-release of TFC2? You can find that here:
  11. TFC Community / Server poll

Most importantly though, it has to be a server that you enjoy running. Don't try to run a server that you think other people may like. If you're not into your own server, then it's never going to last for very long. The HappyDiggers TFC server has welcomed over 15.000 individual players. The current map has over 7000 individual players with a combined play time of around 27500 hours. The only reason we're still here, is that we like the way we run our server. So whatever kind of server you decide to make, be sure it's what you enjoy doing. Players will come. Maybe not tons of them all at once. But they will come to servers that have people behind them that are putting in effort to make it an enjoyable server to play on.

Awesome, a new server! Congrats on the positive reception and good luck with running things. It's always good to see more and varied servers
  14. I'm afraid those servers died off long ago. In my experience most players just want to play TFC, chat a little and on occasion trade with others. The whole let's "build a server together" attitude usually doesn't last for very long after the first couple of buildings have been build. However nothing is stopping you from joining one of the remaining TFC servers and role playing there. Just don't expect a huge crowd ready to join you in the same play style. You could however probably make a name for yourself if you remain true to the role of your choice. People always seem to appreciate it when someone always has certain goods to trade, someone who gives them food and drink for cheap or is a good black smith and has tools to offer.
