      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. House tutorial - nice, easy, midgame

This is my new "second" or "third" house, that replaces the typical starting latrine architecture. It's intended for midgame, where you have a pickaxe, saw and a (couple of) chisel. However, the basic framework can be done earlier, even out of straw, and replaced later on as tools become available (though for Holy Charged Creeper's sake don't make it out of raw wood logs). Essentially it's the same old box house that can be built very fast. The cool chisel mechanics allow us to add nice decorations that make it look less like an eyesore while we do stuff. I'm not a roof person, so my roofing is simple, but you can add the traditional minecraft roofs if you like. I don't make youtube videos (if anyone wants to make one it would be nice), so click on spoilers below to see the step-by-step instructions. Plank blocks: 90ish Dark blocks (base): 230ish Dark blocks (decoration): 106ish Light blocks: 96ish Preview: The roof glows at night, which is pretty nice: Interior example:
  2. House tutorial - nice, easy, midgame

Looking at this a year later, and god do those stone walls look ugly... I really thought it looked nice at the time (although I guess it's an ok midgame build). Has there been any aesthetic blocks added to the mod since then? Would be nice to try this with a smoother textures.
  3. TFC recontructed

There's no vocal or silent majority, those are just excuses. There are good and bad design choices, that's all.
  4. TFC recontructed

None of that would work, you need a team that can make decisions according to specific goals. There is no lack of that in TFC, the issue we have right now is that devs have decided to alienate a whole bunch of players that had no problem playing the previous versions.
  5. Torch Poll

The poll is missing the "I'm not even going to bother with the mod" option. Turning it off in the configs makes you play a very different game than the one everyone else is playing, so no thanks. This is not an innovative feature, there are several mods that do this. Guess what, those mods have a very specific and limited audience, because this feature is very "not for everyone". Now, TFC was already a very limited mod in the long term. After you get to the endgame steel, there's very little to do. Building cool stuff was the only real endgame at that point, and without convenient lighting that is not really feasible anymore. Smallscale uninspired architecture with minimal lighting is all you can accomplish. I've also had a look at the other new features, and frankly, I'll pass on this version of the mod. For every feature that adds something interesting, there are several that make it too boring and tedious to play.
  6. Torch Discussion

The huge thing YOU are missing is that lanterns will not address the lighting needs of a huge amount of people, and they won't be in the mod for a year or so.Vanilla torches have a very specific purpose. They give you a convenient freedom that makes the game less boring, because you can do the fun stuff and don't have to worry about replacing torches. That allows you to have a huge variety of playstyles in one game.In TFC you are going the opposite route. You remove all the convenience, forcing a very narrow playstyle that matches your own. You may enjoy making a small hovel that has two torches in it, but a lot of people won't.You ARE dismissing and ignoring feedback that doesn't suit you, and you have been doing it since forever. This is not something I noticed today, it's always been here. It's everywhere, too, in the mod, on the wiki, on these forums...
  7. Sequoia forest

In previous versions I had sequoias at 12000, not sure how it works now.
  8. Torch Discussion

You can make a forge and cook torches 5 by 5. All you need for a forge is some charcoal and cobblestone.
  9. I'd like to share some tips on what tools to make first and out of which metal. In the beginning ore is scarce, and it makes sense to manage it carefully. This applies mostly to copper and bronze age. First of all, I would recommend avoiding making ingots too early, since you need anvils to work with them (which require an abysmal ton of ingots to make to begin with, and you need both a copper and a bronze anvil to work with bronze). It is best to stick with casting tools in ceramic vessels for a while, since you can easily cast both copper and bronze. So you are a new player and have found enough copper ore, and maybe some cassiterite or silver and gold. That means that you can make tools out of copper and bronze (or black bronze). Also note that Igneous Extrusive rocks are significantly more durable than others, so it's worth seeking them out and using them for tools until you can make metal tools. Any bronze type tool is obviously better (higher damage and durability), but some can be safely made from lesser materials (where lesser means either copper, or the one that you have in a higher abundance, something you can waste). Copper is not useless or cheap, you need a lot of it for making anvils and high-end structures, instead of burning it all on tools that should be made out of bronze. Black bronze casting lets you use half the amount of copper, since you replace some of the copper with silver and gold, so it can be "cheaper" overall. From top priority to bottom: [*]Saw - lesser materials. This is probably the first tool you'll want to make instead of a pickaxe, since it unlocks all the cool wood items. One saw can make quite a lot of wood planks, so durability is not an issue. Make it out of yoour most convenient tool metal. [*]Pickaxe - best materials. After a saw, this is the next top-priority item. A pickaxe will need a lot of durability, so at least bronze is a must. Ironically, they appear to last a very long time compared to other tools. [*]Prospector's Pick - lesser/best materials. While necessary, this pick can tolerate a lot of abuse even when made from lesser materials. Still, a bronze pick is a good long-term investment if you can spare some bronze. [*]Scythe - lesser/best materials. A scythe is needed for fast farming of sticks and saplings. Depending on the trees you plant, make it out of cheapest or best materials. Trees like willow seem to be dropping a lot of saplings (because of larger foliage), while white cedars barely drop any. A cheap scythe will do fine for willow, while a bronze scythe will last much longer than a copper one on cedar trees. [*]Hoe - lesser materials. A metal hoe is needed for efficient farming, but it does not lose durability when used correctly. Only tilling soil does that, and you can make a throwaway stone hoe for tilling. [*]Axe - best materials. A metal axe is a fairly low-priority item, but it should be made out of bronze or better. [*]Chisel - best materials. A chisel is a luxury item, that can be saved for last. Chisels burn through durability insanely fast, so bronze or better is a must-have. If you make one, you'll probably need to make a few more later, so stock up on chisel molds. [*]Knife / Hammer / Shovel - lesser materials. These items can be made of stone for a very long time. Metal simply makes them more convenient to use, if you can spare some.
  10. Torch Discussion

I don't think this will add any fun to the mod. It needs more interesting mechanics like the smithing, not tedium like cutting out rot from cabbage and relighting torches.
  11. I was using water barrels to cool ingots, and shift-clicking them in and out of the barrel was creating a display-only duplicate in the inventory space where the ingot was. It was possible to shift-click the duplicate into the barrel as well. Closing the inventory removed the displayed duplicate. Maybe related to the ghost items bug?
  12. Metal Duplication

How do you pour an incomplete mold into a crucible? I was unable to do that.
  13. Charcoal pit

Not sure about torches, but you can make underwater pits. Not very practical, but fun to try.
  14. Etho does TerraFirmaCraft

He's breeding pigs in that tiny barn space... hehe...
  15. Wiki Edits/Suggestions

I was talking about this, not something from a let's play.
  16. Wiki Edits/Suggestions

You need to mention that Armor Smithing does nothing, as well as everything else that does nothing.
  17. Charcoal pit

White cedar farms suck for charcoal making. You'd be better off making expeditions into forests and chopping them down, making charcoal pits right there and moving on.
  18. Charcoal pit

Actually I was wrong, I just tested it and you can have the firepit right next to the door. Perhaps you haven't filled the room to the top, and there were air blocks?
  19. Charcoal pit

You need to surround the firepit with log piles, the firepit in front of the doors is what you did wrong.
  20. Simple guide to TerraFirmaCraft!

These will be very useful for beginners. Bellows don't increase the speed of heating. They just raise the max temperature of the forge or firepit or blast furnace. The only time that's useful is when you make steel, and only when the steel ingot is at the maximum possible temperature that the forge can reach naturally. Bbellows are completely useless before that (unless you use firepits instead of a forge for some reason).
  21. Copper double ingots dissapearing and apearing

This has been in like every version, no reason to expect it to change in 0.78.17. It also happens with blooms, food, hammers. Ethos has lost two hammers like that in his let's plays. He still has no clue that it's this bug.
  22. Crop Cold Resilience

I dunno, that sentence is just hard to understand. Can't you say something like "The first stage of these crops will survive freezing temperatures"?
  23. Crop Cold Resilience

"Will survive freezing temperatures while still young." implies that they can survive while not young.
  24. Tech up to tier 4 metals

I find that level 2 blast furnace is just perfect. If you put a forge with a crucible next to it, it creates exactly enough ingots to let you work on the forge non-stop. Once you make the smallest blast furnace and make a steel anvil with it, you can melt the iron anvil that gives you more than half of the iron needed for the second level.
  25. Does a bloomery and blast furnace need to see the sky, or can they be underground without issues? I'm thinking of building them like parallel chimneys alongside my forge underground. I'm not anywhere near to making them, but I'm designing a new house and it would be nice to build it in a way that these structures are supported.
