      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

How to Gold pan?

8 posts in this topic

I can't find anything about panning anywhere except little snippets here and there. I have followed these instructions and I can't get it to work. Can some one please give a detailed explanation as to how they work?

From the wiki: The Gold Pan is an item used to help search for ores. to use it, you must right-click on a sand block inside a river biome, or a gravel block under water. once filled with soil, you then must find running water less than a block deep, and right click at your feet. the Gold Pan will then search an area about 50m around you and 35m deep. it has a random chance of producing a random gem, or a small ore found within this area, if any. sand gives a higher change of gems being found, and gravel does the same for ore.

alternatively, you can dump the pan into a Sluice to add 7 units to it.

Curses, reached my "Positive Votes" limit for today... *checks time* in 16 Minutes?!?! Wow... So I'll give toy an "Internet Thumbs Up" instead! :P

Anyway, I use them for filling my sluice, if I use them at all, honestly

I honestly never use sluices, or pans, they aren't as profitable as mining, if you have a propick and a pick.

the sluice farm I have on my SP world is crapping out bismuth, Copper, Casserite, and Hematite, and there is a desert to the north, and a large lake system west of me I can farm to get stuff from the sluices.

I am on the very bottom edge of a metal age, I'm not all out of the stone gae

so... in other words, if there's no ore within a 50x35m of your sluice, just don't waste the resources as gems are useless and you could fill it with gravel till the end of time and still get no ores?

When you pick up rocks from the ground, you have a chance to also find ore. As far as I know, this works on the same principle as the the gold pan and sluice (that ore must be located near by). So. Walk around a river biome and look for rocks with ore in them to find a good place to start panning. If that fails, just start panning so you can find a good place to build a sluice farm. The gold pan is mobile so it basically replaces the pro pick, albeit, a nerfed one.

The first thing I got from a sluice was an exquisite ruby, but for now it has no use.

But if you mine the ores near the sluice, will it stop giving you that ore?
