      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Getting Started Guide

5 posts in this topic

I am going to use Tin (Cassiterite) for brevity as the starting metal, but Bismuth (Bismuthinite) and Zink (Sphalerite) also work just as well.

Day 1

Goals

  • Make basic weapons and tools
  • Get food
  • Make a bed
You want to start off breaking leaves for sticks and gathering stone. Once you have a hand full of stone and sticks, go ahead and make yourself a set of Javelins (http://wiki.terrafir...aft.com/Javelin). If you put 4-5 of them on your hotbar and select the furthest right Javelin, then you can throw them repeatedly from the same hotbar slot.

Hunt down a couple cows and enough sheep to make a bed. Be careful not to kill too many animals as they do not actually respawn.

Using the knapping system (http://wiki.terrafir...ft.com/Knapping) you will want to make an axe and a shovel. With your new axe, you will want to cut down a few trees for logs. Keep in mind, you should clear the leaves first as they disappear once the tree is cut down.

Combine the axe with your logs to make planks, then combine the planks to make 4 plank blocks. This will let you craft a workbench. From here, make your bed.

If you find that it's starting to get dark, toss down your bed and sleep! It's not the safest, but will cut the amount of time spent in the wild at night with the monsters around.

Day 2

Goals

  • Find a source of Cassiterite
  • Make a shelter
  • Make a fire pit
As you hunt for a suitable place to call home, make sure to break all of the plants you find as they will drop various kinds of seeds.

Your primary goal is to pick up rocks looking for sources of ore. If at any point you find yourself picking up a piece of Cassiterite or Native Copper, place a rock down on that spot to keep track of where you found it. If you find more then one piece of ore in the same general area, make the rock stack higher. This not only helps you find some starting ore (Cassiterite will make Tin), but finding a reasonably large quantity means there is a vein near by!

Once you have found a place with a decent quantity of ore, you will want to search nearby for a stream or lake to call home.

Using your shovel, carve out a wall from a ravine or hill to form the foundation for your shelter. You can then use stone to fill in the walls, and logs to make the roof. You may also consider making a door to secure your shelter from mobs.

At this point, you are also likely starting to get very hungry. Go ahead and toss down a fire pit (http://wiki.terrafir...aft.com/Firepit) and start cooking up the beef that you brought with you. Don't eat the meat uncooked, as it doesn't really do much to sate your hunger.

Day 3

Goals

  • Plant seeds
  • Find clay
  • Gather ore
Your primary goal will be to gather resources, so now is a good time to clear up your inventory. Use the seeds you have brought with you to make a small farm along the river or lake. You can shift right-click with a log to make a log pile to store your excess wood. You may also want to consider making a chest or two (http://wiki.terrafir...orage_Solutions).

Finding Cassiterite laying on the ground and a good source of clay are both super important. You will be wanting at least two stacks of Cassiterite. If you can't find enough laying on the ground, you may want to consider panning and making a few Sluices (http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Sluice).

Finding clay can occasionally be a bit hard and you may need to go a ways out while searching for it. You will generally find clay near or against sources of water, and the clay may not be visible as grass can cover the block. It can also occasionally be found a layer or two under ground.

Day 4

Goals

  • Make markings
  • Make paper
  • Make a scribing table
  • Make clay molds
  • Make tin ingots
  • Make a pickaxe
  • Make a prospectors pick
Before you can start making metal tools, you will have to make plans first (http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Plans). To do so, you will want to gather sugar cane to make paper (http://www.minecraft....net/wiki/Paper) and ink sacks to make markings (http://wiki.terrafir...aft.com/Marking).

Once you have a a decent amount of both, you will need to craft a scribing table (http://wiki.terrafir.../Scribing_Table). Go ahead and make the plans for a Pickaxe and a Prospectors pick (http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Plans).

You should hopefully have enough clay and Cassiterite to start making tools. If not, spend a day or two searching the rocks or using and building sluices. You will also want to dig down either inside or near your house until you find some exposed stone as you will be using this as an anvil later.

Make some clay molds (http://wiki.terrafir...t.com/Clay_Mold) and then cook them on your Firepit.

To make an ingot, you will need to put the cooked molds in both bottom slots (the right side is used for spillover once the left side is full) of your Firepit, and Cassiterite nuggets in the top slot. This will take a while, but slowly the tin within the Cassiterite will melt and start filling up one of the molds. The mold is full when the durability bar disappears.

Knapp a hammer (http://wiki.terrafir...ft.com/Knapping) and right click the hammer on the exposed stone you cleared to earlier to make an anvil. Once your tin has cooled enough to no longer be liquid, put it in the anvil. You should now see a set of directions on the right telling you how to form the tin into an ingot.

This will take some practice, and if at any point you can no longer work the Tin... make sure to heat it back up. Use the chart at http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Metals and make sure that your Tin is hot enough to be worked, but is not liquid.

Once you have an ingot, you can then work it on the anvil with the Pickaxe plan to create your first metal tool! You will want to do the same with the Prospectors pick.

Day 5

Goals

  • Mine!
With your pickaxe, prospecting pick, and a shovel, make your way to where you found the highest concentration of cassiterite. If you were unable to find a concentration of the ore, you will want to at least find some Andesite, Basalt, Diorite, Gabbro, Granite, or Rhyolite rock as this is the stone cassiterite can be found near. (If you are going for Zink or Bismuth, you can find the stone common for their ores on the wiki.)

The prospecting pick has a chance to tell you if there is ore within a specific range of the block you right clicked on. If there are multiple ore types, it will only inform you of one type. Occasionally you will get the message "Found nothing of interest" even if there is ore near by, so make sure to check the adjacent blocks too.

You can try using your prospecting pick from the surface, but keep in mind that the ore may be deeper then the pick can detect. I like to dig a spiral staircase or a ramp down and randomly sample as I go.

If you get a reading, mark that spot. You then want to go north, east, south, and west about 12 blocks out. At the end of each tunnel, take a reading again. You are looking for the sample size to increase (or stay the same in the case of a "very large sample").

In the directions where the sample size is the highest, you will want to repeat the process. If you have not run into the ore after mapping things out a bit, you should keep in mind that the ore may be above or below you. Pick the spot in the center of the best readings and move up/down a few levels. The ore could also be just inside of your grid, so you may consider making channels between your sampling tunnels.

What to do next?

You should consider making both a Bloomery (http://wiki.terrafir...ft.com/Bloomery) and a Forge (http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Forge). You will also want to make a tin hammer so that you can create Flux (http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Flux). A saw is also important as it allows you to create supports, which will help prevent caveins.

Let's see...

A complete, nice, and understandable guide. Even when there can be faster ways to start, this one works pretty well when you still are a little new in the mod. The only thing i find somehow wrong is the way you advise to use the pro pick... while it can work, you could take a look at the guides about it's use in this section. This way, as i could see myself, you consume less uses of the pickaxe and find ore faster, if done right. You should try yourself this way, when you get the trick it takes less than a day to find the vein.

Considering all this, the guide gets the:

Enjoy! :3

Thanks! I am still getting the hang of the darn thing to be honest :D. The guide is now updated to better describe how to use the pro pick.

This is very helpful. I just started today and had a blast! I'm only calling it quits for tonight because I have to get up early in the morning. My next play through will be much easier knowing what to do. Thanks again :D
