      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Is It Possible To Make Maps?

10 posts in this topic

Is there any way to make maps in TFC? Having found some cinnabar I tried making making a compass with redstone and four pig iron ingots, but that didn't work. I also tried wrought iron and steel, but no luck with those either.

I searched for "map" and "compass" in the wiki and got no hits.

I'm fairly certain they don't exist yet in tfc, there's just so much parallel work to be done, it's low priority. I think the original reason it was postponed was due to an incoming Vanilla change. don't quote me on this though, i've been absent for a while now.

I'm fairly sure I've spawned a vanilla version in with NEI, so as a last resort you could also take away the required materials and spawn yourself one.

You can enable iron recipes in config file. That way you can get vanilla iron by placing wrought iron ingot in crafting grid and craft with it. In SMP recipes required to be turned on both on server and client for it to work.

Might be for another topic, but I think something like a compasses should take a lot more resources and time to make.

Maybe like combining a piece of redstone to pig iron by heating both up to liquid to create a magnetized iron ingot, which can then be shaped in an anvil for a compass magnet, then dyed with red.

Honestly, a compass should be incredibly basic, as should a map which logically would be one of the first things you make.

There's another thread on here somewhere which discusses compasses. I think the simplest and most, dare I say it, *realistic* approach would be to do something with a piece of magnetite. Shouldn't require redstone at all. Maybe magnetite and a bucket of water.

I agree with renadi on this one. A compass is something incredibly simple to make. In principle we could have discovered it far earlier - and maybe we did, since many cultures didn't have writing for a long time. If there is a reasonably stable magnetic field on a planet, compasses are very basic.

Well in real life you don't make a map with a compass. So when the mod maker has time they should make it so you can craft 9 pieces of paper together to make parchment which you would in turn craft with 8 different dyes which would result in a map easy beginning item that is also very useful.
