      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Larger boats

6 posts in this topic

I do realize we have boats already. They're these dinky little row boats that wouldn't last half a day on the open ocean, but somehow do without issue. I'd like larger boats though. Something that can haul back goods from different outposts, and be able to carry more than one. Yes, they'd be an expensive build (taking a lot of wood, as well as some metal for fittings), but for long distance travel, they'd be well worth it.

I would like something implemented like a dugout canoe, which would have been able to carry two people and some goods probably the equivalent of a single chest full of items. These were hugely popular during the stone age and throughout the bronze ages/iron age so in terms of dating for the boats it shouldn't be a problem.

The mode of transport through water is different form place to place. Egypt primarily used boats of straw or reeds strung together. The Americas used Canoes by burning the center part of wood. And the Polynesians used canoes with rafts on the side.

To be honest, I like the Polynesian style. I've seen those in action. They worked on open water, that's how they got so far. I want to see something like that utilized. But I was also thinking of larger boats than those, that being, large sailing boats that would be good for carrying large amounts of goods at a time.

Something like this would be ideal. Make it 6x10, requiring several stacks of wood, a saw, and...four bars of tool metal to craft. Plus rope, made from Thatch.

If TFC is going to introduce larger ships, There should be ways for Naval Warfare to some degree. A greek TrIeme would also fit in the time period and had raming capabilities. Collisons at sea could be very dangerous and if rams were added, it could be very interesting, with merchant ships hauling goods and pirate ships ramming, killing, and looting. I think making such large ships would require a large amount of resources (several stacks of wood, some metal, some sort of rope, cloth for a sail, and a lot of time) Some sort of dry dock would also be needed for ships, if not canoes.
