      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Canoes

For the canoes, would it be possible to add the feature of tying a rope to a fence post?

The existing vanilla boats have the bad habit of wandering around so we can never make a nice port.

If you read all my posts, you'd see that I mentioned pulling canoes onto the shore (as is done with canoes in real life). Canoes are long and have their stability when moving in a straigt line. An unattended canoe isnt safe in the water.

That's great thanks for the answer. Somehow I missed that point.

There is a lot of really good stuff in this thread but I had another thought that I didn't see anywhere else so far. Forgive me if i missed something.

I think the type of boat you are using should affect your ability to explore. You shouldn't be able to sail across an ocean in a canoe (or a sketchy looking wooden box for that matter). I keep thinking of the scene in Castaway where Tom Hanks is trying to get off the island on a raft but the tide keeps pushing him back in. Historically we didn't cross oceans until we developed certain types of ships. Before that we were just hopping around coast lines. Ship technology developed over time just like everything else.

Implementing tides and waves in TFC would probably be needlessly complicated, but you could get a similar effect as a game mechanic if you use use water depth as the limiting factor. Say for example a canoe can only go into 6 block deep water. Anything deeper than 6 blocks and you lose your ability to control the boat and it "falls" back into shallower water. It would be enough for rivers, lakes and hopping around the coast, but not crossing an ocean. A more advance type of boat (whatever that may be) could navigate deeper water.

To play devil's advocate to my own idea, I could imagine this making it VERY difficult (maybe even impossible) to travel long distance early-on in search of flux which is so critical to starting the metal tech tree. The same could be said for finding animals, certain ores, etc., but those aren't quite as critical at the start.

(Obviously I want to be able to row too, but maybe that's just me. That is how I got the nickname Rowist in real life.)
