      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

World generation

8 posts in this topic

Hello, I've just recently started playing TFC again, and the previous time I played was in October 2013. It seems a lot has changed in world generation... and not for the best. There are floating pieces of stone and dirt, many holes on the ground, some exposed, others covered by a single block of dirt. There are exposed ores. I don't remember any of this ever happening in October. Why is this happening? And are they working on it?

Thank you for reading.

i LOVE the exposed ores... i also love the springs, though they definitely need some fine tuning :P

Build 78's main focus was actually overhauling world generation. This included making ores spawn at varying heights depending on the shape of the terrain, and removing the layer requirements of ore spawns. Because of this, it is indeed possible for ores and minerals like graphite and garnierite to be seen exposed on cliff-sides. This was intentional.

As for the holes in the ground, 78 also added fissures and hot springs, which are a little bit buggy at the moment in how they spawn, but the general idea is correct. 78 also fixed caves not coming up to the surface, which is why it seems like there are a lot more holes in the ground now, because the caves down below are actually breaking through to the surface.

It's intentional to have various ores exposed? In my current map I've found 1 exposed gold vein and 1 copper vein right in the same place, and I had to mine 2 blocks to find another copper vein right next to my house. Don't you think this makes the early game too easy?

All of this 50~ blocks apart, by the way. But could be just luck.

Edit: different question: how does the sugar cane spawning work? Does it only appear somewhere nearer the equator than 12k north?

No, because you got extremely lucky in finding those exposed veins. It's not like there are exposed veins all over the place, they're actually somewhat rare.

Something else to keep in mind is that you cannot mine those veins until you have a pickaxe. In order to get that pickaxe, you're going to have to find copper nuggets laying on the ground. Those copper nuggets are also markers of a vein, the only difference being that you have to dig down through the dirt to find it, instead of it being exposed. There is very little search involved other than maybe a little bit of durability on the propick if you actually know how to use it.

If the ore isn't exposed it can be quite difficult to find it only by mining blindly, and so having a propick would help considerably. But if it is exposed you only need to have a pickaxe. That's 10 less nuggets to find, which sometimes are really hard to find.

90% of the time, if you see small ore nuggets on the surface, you can simply pick the center of where those nuggets spawned and dig straight down to hit the vein.

That I didn't know. Still, I can count with one hand the times I've found a bunch of nuggets in a perfectly circular pattern. But thank you for your answers.
