Pumpkins to become (temporarily) valuable?

Now that torches burn out, and many players express their dislike of either relighting them or depending on safe chunks, I immediately remembered that jack-o-lanters were still craftable.

They don't appear to be farmable. They're also rare inside the thick Acacia equator.

They're not terribly uncommon to find on rolling hills or plains, but demand would skyrocket on a MP server in the need for a constantly lit area.

 

And they're infinite. Work underwater. Only downside is that you need a solid block to place under, although they can hold their own afterwards. They also take up a block of space that you can't walk through. So, they'll be our temporary lanterns. Until then, good luck

Side question: I was looking through the texture files to see if I could reskin a jack-o-lantern with the redstone lantern texture and it looks like the only texture that changes when you craft a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern is the front face, so if I were to replace the textures for the other sides it would make my pumpkins look like lanterns.  Anyone know if there's a way around this?

 

Edit: I suppose I could just change out the front face texture and place blocks around the other faces and chisel them down to 1/8 thick walls on each side to cover up the other faces.  This pretty much limits you to only using one side for light though, unless you poke some holes in the other walls to let some of the light through.

They are even more valuable as constructions block for emergency shelters when there is not enough wood nearby
