Only help if you can be helpful

Hey All, A topic has come up of late in the IRC channel in regards to the general feel of the forums and the community that supports them. Things have progressed further than I would have liked with out this being addressed more publicly because I would much rather have snubbed this out sooner rather than later.. but I have been busy. Here is the general rule I would like people to follow: Wheaton's Law "Don't be a dick." Those of you from the IRC channel know that this is the only rule I ask people in there to follow and we generally have a good and lively time chatting about all manner of things. This is basic rule that just about everyone understands and I am going to expand it to the forums from here moving forward. If you can not help people in a helpful and polite manner then I simply ask you to stop. Now I generally take a back seat to moderating the forums as I like to participate in the suggestions forum fairly heavily at times and would rather do so as a forums user than a moderator. But I am also fairly well known for being the person who constantly puts their foot down and so I am stepping up and doing so on here. If you find yourself unable to respond to a message politely then I ask that you do not respond. This mostly focuses on the increasing level of hostility found within the Suggestion forum as well as the Server forum. I do not care if this is the 30th some odd time you have seen someone make the same suggestion. Or even if the new post on an older topic is one entry above the old one. I expect the members of this forum to respond politely to the user, new or old, and point to the older topic if it applies and even go the extra step to suggest they either add in new information or to summarize the outcome of the previous discussion based upon the new post's entry into it. That is what we are here for, that is why I close most topics instead of deleting them, so that they can be found and referenced down the road. The next topic is the slew of derailment attempts I have seen as of late. If you want to have fun and joke around that is what the off topic forum is for and pretty much anything goes there. I do not expect to read a suggestion thread and have to go through 3 pages of image memes people have shot back and forth. Quite simply this is a waste of my time to read and then have to clean up. Now for the summary. I am going to start taking a more active role, especially in policing the suggestion forum, and handing out warn levels to people whom I see doing this. These will be indiscriminate and applied not to just the first person who derails or is impolite on a topic or response, but to everyone whom follows the lead of that person. As I do not like doing things with out giving you all warning this post shall serve as that warning. If you have a desire to bring this topic up with me then I invite you to do so on the IRC channel. Lets raise the level of quality and grow the community. Let us not descend into the quality often found on the minecraft or league of legend forums. There is simply no need for that here. Be passionate about things, just do not be abusive.

      Offline Servers

Recently I've seen a few server listings showing up on the first page of the Servers forum that have been closed for an extended period of time, but have recently gotten a reply from a new member who didn't realize the server is offline. To help prevent this from happening in the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could use the report function on the original post of any servers that have been confirmed as offline, so that the topic may be locked. If you are the admin of a server and plan on taking the server offline, please use the report function on the original post of your topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be locked. If you are the admin of a server that has a locked topic, and would wish to bring the server back online, please use the report function on the original post of the topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be unlocked. As always, please remember to follow rule #3 of the servers forum and update your topic title to contain the version of TFC that the server is currently running. You can do so by editing the OP, and then clicking on "Use Full Editor."

Guys, the wiki was deleted.

Yeah, Vladp (who had wiki editing rights prior to going postal) got banned and had a hissy fit.

Here's the old main page: Click Here. Click on a page and if it doesn't come up normally then click "View History" and then click the date of the most recent edit that wasn't Vladp's.

ECC is working on getting the pages back but he's not able to remove Vladp's ability to edit, so he could always come back and mess with it more. We'll have to wait for an admin to come on and fix it.  :)

Vladp did come back and mess with what ECC had fixed.

At the moment we have to wait for an admin to come and fix it permanently though because he seems pretty eager to continue screwing everybody over.

The wiki has been fixed. One thing I just want to note is that while I know that the community had the absolute best intentions in working to try to revert all of the vandalism Vlad did, it actually made my job of fixing the wiki a lot harder. I have software and scripts in place on the wiki that if someone does a mass amount of vandalism, I can quickly revert it all in only a few clicks, as long as no other edits have been made to the page after the vandalism. Because there were edits made to try and revert Vlad's vandalism, I instead had to go through and fix all of those pages manually.

I know you guys love the wiki, and I'm very happy that you want to help, but in the future if you see vandalism, please just let me know and do not try to fix it yourself.

Why would somebody do that? That is so beyond me I cannot even begin to grasp.

Why would one want to willfully destroy what somebody selflessly and with absolute no personal gain built with so much effort?

How much frustration must he have with his own life to do something like that ...

It's very unfortunate, but I can't help but wonder at times if it has to do with the fact that I am a female in power. From his previous behavior as well as the threatening message, it definitely seemed like he saw himself as in a position of authority over me, which is not at all a valid view unless he considered men to have authority over women. It's really a sad thought, and I hope with all my might that it wasn't the case and there is some other explanation. :(

A threatening message?I honestly don't believe it has something to do with you, Kitty, or with you being female; Vlad was treating other users (e.g. Bunsan) much the same way. He clearly is unable to accept being proven wrong in any case.He seems like the kind of person who goes rabid in a simple fight, starting to throw things or even willing to hurt somebody physically ...Don't let this get to you.

He was banned because after receiving a single warning point for abusive behavior, he threatened me via PM if I didn't remove the warning point.

Thanks very much for the supporting words. I would like to stop talking about him now, as that only gives him the satisfaction of being recognized for his bad behavior, almost like how a toddler acts out for attention.

I wish to re ask my question (just once)

I'm so sorry! In all the recent drama, I completely missed your post.

All of the custom TFC mob renders on the wiki were created using Blender. I don't remember exactly which one I used to start with, but if you google "Blender Minecraft Rig" you should be able to find a download that contains all of the vanilla mobs to use as a starting base. From there, using both the code and screenshots for reference, I added the horns to the naked sheep model. I believe that the rig I used had the wool as a separate model, so I simply overlaid it to get the finished, wooly, sheep. I then rendered the two images (naked and wool) and turned them into an animated .gif using photoshop.

I also use Blender for all of the 150x150 block images on the wiki as well.

No problem.--Blender, ok, I thought as software or a Mod using the code to generate the 3D Minecraft.I will use blender, thank you.

I'd love to contribute to the wiki. I was trying to add some info from the changelogs just now, but it seems that you need to be manually authorized to edit pages.

The only way I'm going to get 100+ forum posts is by posting 'thanks' a bunch, or similar content-free posts, which I'm just not going to do. I've been playing minecraft for a long time, and TFC since 1.6.4.

Is there any chance the TFC admin people would reconsider the wiki editing policy to make it easier for people like me to contribute? Adding notes to talk pages don't really work unless there's frequent discussion on them and, critically, unless the editor(s) of that page are active in implementing suggestions.

I realize you have to balance edit permissions with vandalism and wrong info making it on the pages, but MediaWiki has methods to help or even automate that.

What about edit ability, but the edits must be approved manually? And too many incorrect/inappropriate edits and editing is disabled for that user?

Is there any chance this policy will ever change? My apologies if this is the wrong place for this.

The policy in place is actually a relatively new one (updated about 10 days ago) due to the amount of bad edits that were happening. As stated in the post, you only have to meet 1 of the three listed requirements, so you are welcome to choose one other than the 100 post requirement if you so desire.

Well that's embarrassing, I didn't notice that the requirement is only one of the three, not all 3 (and I also didn't realize the policy was that new). Thanks for letting me know!

I would love to help contribute to the wiki.

Though it wouldn't just be me. I have 6 people constantly referencing and asking things about the game that I try to help them fix.

That being said..... I don't have 100 posts on the wiki, nor do I have time to be super active on IRC. I'm no coder either.

If those are strict requirements, then perhaps I can just supply an excel spreadsheet weekly with fixes that need to be made until I'm trusted enough to be a full member.

My name on the wiki is alexbeldan.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Let me know if there's anything I else I can do to help. I await your reply.

This sounds like a wonderful compromise. If the work you show with the spreadsheet is promising, I will happily make an exception and get you started as an editor ASAP.

I know you probably won't add me but hear me out, if you do end up allowing me to add stuff to the wiki i would pretty much add pictures of items and how they are used so that way what people don't understand in words they might understand in a picture of an item or process.

Could you maybe post or PM me a few example pictures? I'm always looking to expand the gallery section on our pages.

Not sure if I'm being helpful, but I've gone through the metals/alloys in the Outdated category to match the template from the Wrought Iron page. I've stuck it all in the Talk sections.

I also added the Grill recipe to the Wrought Iron page. I've left off the history sections so far. Let me know if this is helpful at all.

Edit: To clarify this is directed at Kitty. I don't have editing rights so I've just done a little clean up of stuff and left it to be approved.

I would like to help in the wiki.

Coincidentally I just got 100 posts :D

My posts weren't always brilliant but I think I could help a bit in the wiki.

Though I'm native german I have sufficent english skills and due to the fact I worked on the IC² wiki for a while I have some skill with wiki editing too.

Good night. ^_^
