Only help if you can be helpful

Hey All, A topic has come up of late in the IRC channel in regards to the general feel of the forums and the community that supports them. Things have progressed further than I would have liked with out this being addressed more publicly because I would much rather have snubbed this out sooner rather than later.. but I have been busy. Here is the general rule I would like people to follow: Wheaton's Law "Don't be a dick." Those of you from the IRC channel know that this is the only rule I ask people in there to follow and we generally have a good and lively time chatting about all manner of things. This is basic rule that just about everyone understands and I am going to expand it to the forums from here moving forward. If you can not help people in a helpful and polite manner then I simply ask you to stop. Now I generally take a back seat to moderating the forums as I like to participate in the suggestions forum fairly heavily at times and would rather do so as a forums user than a moderator. But I am also fairly well known for being the person who constantly puts their foot down and so I am stepping up and doing so on here. If you find yourself unable to respond to a message politely then I ask that you do not respond. This mostly focuses on the increasing level of hostility found within the Suggestion forum as well as the Server forum. I do not care if this is the 30th some odd time you have seen someone make the same suggestion. Or even if the new post on an older topic is one entry above the old one. I expect the members of this forum to respond politely to the user, new or old, and point to the older topic if it applies and even go the extra step to suggest they either add in new information or to summarize the outcome of the previous discussion based upon the new post's entry into it. That is what we are here for, that is why I close most topics instead of deleting them, so that they can be found and referenced down the road. The next topic is the slew of derailment attempts I have seen as of late. If you want to have fun and joke around that is what the off topic forum is for and pretty much anything goes there. I do not expect to read a suggestion thread and have to go through 3 pages of image memes people have shot back and forth. Quite simply this is a waste of my time to read and then have to clean up. Now for the summary. I am going to start taking a more active role, especially in policing the suggestion forum, and handing out warn levels to people whom I see doing this. These will be indiscriminate and applied not to just the first person who derails or is impolite on a topic or response, but to everyone whom follows the lead of that person. As I do not like doing things with out giving you all warning this post shall serve as that warning. If you have a desire to bring this topic up with me then I invite you to do so on the IRC channel. Lets raise the level of quality and grow the community. Let us not descend into the quality often found on the minecraft or league of legend forums. There is simply no need for that here. Be passionate about things, just do not be abusive.

      Offline Servers

Recently I've seen a few server listings showing up on the first page of the Servers forum that have been closed for an extended period of time, but have recently gotten a reply from a new member who didn't realize the server is offline. To help prevent this from happening in the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could use the report function on the original post of any servers that have been confirmed as offline, so that the topic may be locked. If you are the admin of a server and plan on taking the server offline, please use the report function on the original post of your topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be locked. If you are the admin of a server that has a locked topic, and would wish to bring the server back online, please use the report function on the original post of the topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be unlocked. As always, please remember to follow rule #3 of the servers forum and update your topic title to contain the version of TFC that the server is currently running. You can do so by editing the OP, and then clicking on "Use Full Editor."

[TFC 0.79.17] Lanterns Addon for TFC

38 posts in this topic

This addon adds lanterns to TFC (ExtraFirma lanterns were used as a base idea).

There are 12 different lanterns which could be made from 1 - 3 tier's metals and alloys.

Lanterns made from 3 tier metal have greater light level, all other characteristics are the same.

Sneak + Right Click with empty hand on lantern - allows to turn on/off light.

Thank you for kind words.> Please tell me they don't go out in the rain.

These are lanterns and not torches or candles - they don't go out in the rain! :)I thought to make so lanterns must be refuiled once per 1 - 2 years, but not think this is good idea - we already have torches with such function, but lanterns is more expensive replacement but with permanent light.I'm planning to make another icons for "lantern shells" - more clear than current.Icons that are using now - are just copy of lantern textures.Btw, what do you think do we need more lanterns that could be made from 0 tier metals and >=4 tier alloys?Or current limitation for 1-3 tiers is better?

What do you think could be improved in current lanterns?

The only improvement I can think of is the textures for the shell, and possibly a different name for it. At least for me, I think of a "Lantern Shell" as the outside part, not the "guts" of the lantern. Granted the technical term for it is a "Font" but that might make less sense to everyone lol. Maybe "Lantern Core" instead?

The metals are fine, as they still give a large variety and still look "believable". Something like Red/Blue Steel might be too much of an overpowering color. Also having more metals, and having to have an item for every alcohol type on top of that seems a bit overkill (like the new tfc metal trap doors).

Aside from that, I can't see anything wrong with the mod. It was exactly what I was looking for, just like ExtraFirma, but without all the other items I didn't care for anyway ;)

Can I include it in our modpack?

Yes, sure - it could be included. It would be nice to have this addon on our server :)
Thank you for detailed feedback.I agree with you - "Lantern Core" will be definitelly better than "Shell".

Yes, agree.

Could it be possible to make it so that higher tier lanterns put out light over a wider area and lower tiered ones light up smaller areas? :P

Ohh, thats nice idea, I will implement it.

Copper Lantern will have light level lower than current (current is the same as torch), Platinum and Wrought Iron Lanterns will have max light level.

I am a little torn on the idea of changing the light level. I do like the concept of lanterns putting off different light levels, maybe just having it more powerful than a torch is what I like. Personally myself (and server) have been using the lanterns for aesthetics, some builds look better having a different type of metal (like using certain wood/stone combinations to make it look good). So if I may make a humble suggestion, that if this is implemented, if there could be a config option to disable it and have all lanterns give off the same light level.

I do think that the lanterns should put off more light than a standard torch, as they are more time consuming and expensive to build. I just don't think that the metal should effect the light level.

This is just my two cents on the topic ;)

This addon. I like it.

ANOTHER!

On a more serious note, I do like the look of them. Are they only placable on walls, or could you put them on the top of a fence post as well?

They can be placed on top, side, and bottom of blocks (including both vanilla and TFC fences)

If you do place them on the side of a fence or wall (like cobblestone/brick walls) there is not a connected texture, so it just "floats" in the air.

Yes, looks like config file is needed.

This will be fixed in new update so lanterns could be connected to side of fence or wall:post-14675-0-58906900-1416251768_thumb.j

Hi @aleksey_t.

First of all Thank for a great mod/addon.

I currently working on my own add for TFC and have a question for you, is it possible to take a look at your source code for some tips? I'm a noob at modding, but think the best way to learn is to look at examples...

Aleksey,

Great work on your addons! We have Lanterns installed on our server and we've built dozens of them. We want to upgrade to 79.17 and also install your Decorations addon when you are able to update it. I believe you said that people with Lanterns already will have the lanterns disabled from Decorations. Does that mean we have to keep Lanterns installed and wait for an update to it? Or can we install Decorations and uninstall Lanterns and still have the already built lanterns continue to function?
