Howdy! The issue you're having is that sugarcane needs very high temperatures to grow. You're planting in in too low temperatures. The seeds dissapear because they are never even generated; your plant dies so fast that the game doesn't even realize there was a plant there, and so no seeds are left behind. People have asked about this before, and Kitty explained the issue. If that official link fetcher were around, I'm sure he could find the thread

And if you don't want to waste your money (or whatever you trade with NPCs with), then don't plant sugarcane in polar climates

I mean, the temperature was over 6 degrees, and I planted the sugarcane, and it disappeared, didnt return seeds. The temperature was 12 degrees. It isn't the same problem, and realize that

As Hubertus stated, and as I stated in the post that Xen so kindly linked, Sugar Cane is a tropical crop. That means the temperature needs to be at an absolute bare minimum 12 in order to plant it, and it has to be at least 15 in order for the plant to actually grow.

Also happens with Jute at very low (<5) temperatures, as I found out recently...  Not happy I wasted my precious jute seeds
