      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Naming Animals

7 posts in this topic

I have read the wiki and forums and know that it is possible to name animals after their hearts get full and turn "gold." However, I cannot seem to get any of my animals to this point. Some animals get "full" enough for me to ride/milk/shear, but won't fill more than that, even with daily feeding. At least they retain this level of fullness if I miss some days of feeding.

Then I have some "new" sheep who I have been faithfully feeding each TFC morning, and just when their heart gets a tiny bit of red so I can shear them, the next morning it is empty again. I am sneak-feeding each day. Is there something I am missing? Does shearing sheep reduce their hearts?

Also, for horses, do you need to ride instead of feed daily to increase heart to "gold"?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. :)

0.79.0 Change Log

  • Familiarity will decrease slightly each day if it hasn’t reached a certain level and you haven’t interacted with the animal
  • Familiarity has a set cap after which it can no longer be increased in adult animals. Baby animals can always increase their familiarity, and do so much faster than adults.
  • Baby animals retain 50% of their mother’s familiarity when born, unless she is close to maximum familiarity, in which case they will retain 90% of it

If your animals are adults, you'll never be able to get them to gold. You have to get them to gold while they are still babies. That's what the "cap" in the change log is talking about.

Are you sneak-feeding and shearing your sheep? You need to feed it every day even if you are shearing it.

Horses will take multiple generations to get to gold, since you cannot get adults to gold, but you also cannot ride a baby. Basically, get an adult to the cap, then breed it and as soon as the baby is born feed it to get the familiarity as high as possible before it reaches adult status. You may not be able to get it to full familiarity by that point, so you'll need to breed it with another high familiarity animal to get another baby that will have a higher starting familiarity, so you won't have to feed it as much to reach gold.

Thank you - that does help me understand the "cap" situation very clearly now. :)  However, I still have a problem with my sheep having a bit of their heart filled one day, then the next TFC morning it is empty again. This happens regardless of whether I've sheared it or not.  It seems to be the rams that tend to do this. I am playing on a server, as well, but I have been the only one on for hours.

Also, I did feed my baby cow to the point where it has a gold heart, but I did not get prompted to name it. Do I need to wait for it to grow to adulthood to name it? What happens if I am not on the server and when it reaches adulthood?

Thanks again for you help!

What do you mean by "prompted to name it"? You can't name it until you reach a certain level of familiarity, but you still need to craft a name tag and choose a name, you just can't use that tag on an animal if the familiarity is too low. It doesn't automatically ask you to name it.

As for the sheep, are you feeding them every day? Until the heard has a white border, the familiarity can decrease if you miss a day. For instance, feed it on day one, on day two there's a bit of red on the heart. If you don't feed it on day two, the red will be gone again on day three.

Ok, so I did not know you had to craft a name tag. There is no mention of it on the wiki and the changelog doesn't say how to craft or use one.  I just assumed it was like MoCreatures where you are prompted to name animals. :)

So, let me get this straight. First, feed an adult female to get it to the "cap." Breed the female and feed the baby until it has a gold heart. Craft a nametag somehow and then name the gold heart animal?

Sorry to be a bother, I do try to read the wiki and changelog first. :) Am I missing where it gives the recipe for a nametag?

Thanks again!

Thank you! Thought I searched for "nametag" and "name tag" must obviously did not. :)
