[Solved] I need help with animal familiarization.

I'm quite new to TFC, I've only been playing it for about 2 real time weeks and I started over several times due to poor choice of starting maps. But now I have a nice map and I'm quite advanced ...

 

... except I would like to have some farm animals that I can use (shear, milk), but I have troubles with that.

I found a wild sheep and I tried to feed (her, I think). I tried with rye grains and oat grains. But no matter what I do, the animal does not eat the grain. I tried clicking (right and left), sneak-clicking (right and left). I ALWAYS get the "Animal won't let you do that" message.

 

I read the changelog, but it did not make me any wiser

 

I tried with a cow. Same result. I googled somewhere about sheep feeding themselves on grass and that to make them "hungry" one should keep them off grass. So I made a nice corral on cobblestone and enticed a couple of sheep and a cow inside. I tried for 3 in-game days to feed them (2-3 times a day). Same result. The familiarity indicator is all the time at the lowest level and they "won't let" me feed them.

 

I'm probably doing something wrong, something really simple and stupid, but I have no idea what that might be. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Are you using the "raw" grain (fresh from the ground), or have you refined it first (put it in your crafting area with a knife)?  You need to use the refined grains, not the other.

I use refined (after using a knife).

So it's sneak-right click to feed the animal. You can only do it once per day, and you'll know that it was successful because the animal will burp, and your refined grains will be 5 oz lighter. If you then try to feed it a second time, you will get the "The Animal won't let you do that message" because feeding after the animal has been familiarized will try to breed it, not familiarize it more.

 

If you're still having issues, could you please post a screenshot of you holding the refined grain, while sneaking and looking at the animal that you are trying to feed?

 

Also note that depending on the animal, it may take 3 or 4 days of consistent feeding before the first red pixel will show up on the heart indicator.
