      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Dear Forum Staff, whats about that Technic Launcher?

8 posts in this topic

Hello Forum Staff!

The rules forbid the posting of Technic Platform pack, but I wonder why thats an issue?

Also why arent FTB packs forbidden too?

Thanks for clarification!

i believe it is because the technic platform doesn't give proper credit to modders nor asks permission to redistribute the mods in a modpack and FTB requires that for modpacks.

From experience I know that the FTB guys do a really good job at enforcing mod permissions for all the mod packs on their launcher. If you don't have permission for a certain mod, your pack won't be on their launcher.

With Technic it's the wild west. Anyone can put any mod without permission in their pack and on their launcher. It even goes so far that people modify mods without their author's consent and redistribute the modified code. This is not only something nobody should want, it's also illegal.

If you go down that road then one should mention that modding Minecraft is already illegal...!

And if you read the rule it states "We do not support the use of the Technic/Tekkit launcher on these forums. You are welcome to create a Technic/Tekkit modpack or server with TerraFirmaCraft, you just aren't allowed to advertise it here." - so its not a question about the mod distribution, but Technic itself. Why? It pioneered the easy distribution of mods, which expanded the public awareness of mod overall.

So Im still curious whats the official statement on that, not guesstimations...!?

I can not speak for the TFC devs, but Technic has a bad history. Also, modding is legal. Just go https://account.mojang.com/documents/minecraft_eula and do a ctrl+F and search for "mods" without the quotes and you will find that it says this:

If you've bought the Game, you may play around with it and modify it. We'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changed versions of our software. Basically, mods (or plugins, or tools) are cool (you can distribute those), hacked versions of the Game client or server are not (you can't distribute those).

Indeed, forgot about that Mojang has added this to their EULA.

The short story is that we have a bad history with Technic. They have absolutely no respect for mod developers, and it took actions as far as DMCA requests to take the mod down from packs that did not have permission back before TFC was open source. Because TFC is now open source, there's absolutely nothing we can do legally to stop you from redistributing it, but that doesn't mean we can't ban it from this forum.
