      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Why I will never smelt Bronze Again...

15 posts in this topic

Hello! I have discovered the definition of "smithing". I have spent the last few days gathering and smelting bronze ingots to get to the iron age. How much bronze you ask? Only 128 ingots XD. Honestly that was not horrible to collect. Using an old poor Cassiterite mine and a Rich Native Copper mine, I was able to amass this amount with a bit of work. I went through 1 1/2 bronze picks and several stacks (160 oz.) of bread throughout the crafting. I forgot to take pictures but I will say, there was a ton of ore. I calculated the amount of copper ore collected and I had gathered a little 17,000 units of it, enough for 170 ingots of copper, but why would I do that? I began the process of smelting the ore using 8 pit kilns, each with 2 clay vessels, each filled with 8 ingots worth of copper. I had made around 22 clay molds for making the ingots so the pouring wasn't a problem. Surprisingly, this was the shortest and easiest part of the build only taking around 45 minutes. I stacked up all of the ingots and took a screenshot, I will do my best to upload it directly :

I spent the next 1 hour of that day and another 2 hours today welding and forging all of the ingots into double plates, using 2 stacks (around, I don't know exactly how much) of flux and 4 stone hammers, I made 2 copper hammers in the meantime. I came out with 32 bronze double plates and Adept in general smithing, I crafted the bloomeries and hopped on my donkey, riding towards the next town, Russelsmith. Many set backs accured, manly the almost death of my donkey several times, but eventually I made it to Russelsmith and put down the bloomeries in the foundry. I took a final screen shot:

I spent alot of time on this so tell me what you think, I calculated that I will be able to process 32 Iron at a time. I plan on using all of this iron to create a rail line between the two towns.

The top area is a servicing deck so I can load the bloomeries

Edit: my donkey died :(

I like bloomeries - you don't have to watch them.  I made two for a rail project.  I found that to be plenty - between miscellaneous other tasks and smithing, I couldn't keep up with those two.   And laying rail lines is great fun.  Any idea how much many meters of rail you'll be putting down?

You don't have to watch bloomeries but you have to work the results on the forge quite a bit.

I have several hundred blocks between the towns, Im using a railcraft compatability mod, so it will take WAY more Iron. I realised after using them that it was a massive amount of Iron, but I can have a continuous stream of Iron because the time it takes to refine the blooms is around how long it takes the bloomeries to finish.

Ya, I guess I should have qualified that statement - if you have a crucible, bloomeries are nice.  Then you just split the bloom, and melt the refined blooms in the crucible, rather than having to smith each one.

I didn't know you could melt blooms for iron in a crucible!

I wouldn't do that if I were you.

0.79.18 Changelog:

[*]Bloom Overhaul - This change means that all large blooms must be split in the anvil in order to get the full amount of wrought iron. Once the bloom has been split into 100 unit or less pieces, it is up to the player if they wish to turn it into an ingot by using the anvil, forge, or crucible.

[*]Crucible input slot will no longer accept refined blooms larger than 100 units, or raw blooms of any size.

[*]Raw blooms that are melted in a forge will now give unknown metal.

[*]Refined & Raw Blooms of any size that are melted in the forge will give at maximum 100 units of metal. Any remaining units of metal will be destroyed.

I think raw blooms melted in a blast furnace also give an unknown metal.

That's impressive! Sure, you'll need to find a lot of iron veins to keep these bloomeries full!

Woops, sorry, my terminology mistake there.  Whatever the things are you get after you split the bloom are called, that's what I meant.  I forgot the thing between those and raw blooms is what's called a 'refined' bloom.

Still, with crucible it's only two smithing operations (refine and spilt) to get a lot of useable wrought iron ingots.  The BF, every single pig iron ingot has to be smithed twice to get a steel ingot.  That's a lot of smithing!

It requires a ton of ore to keep going! Also uses around 2 stacks of charcoal per run :/. The profit is worth it though. I lost 7 ingots of possible wrought iron because I melted a bloom with 800% iron. Still, the first round of iron was enough for an anvil, sword, pick and some other tools. But if you value your time then never do this, if anything 2 bloomeries is plenty.

Oh ya! If I ever play on a server I will do this, as long as people contribute to iron ore and charcoal should work fine! Btw I love the house you made in your post, it helped me finish this as it looked like your world was way harder to shape then my little goal.

Thanks!  I'm still laboring away... up to February 4th in the year 1010.  I've got the base of the wall surrounding my land and I'm focusing on filling in all the dangerous pits and replacing any exposed stone or gravel with grass for the whole lawn.  It's slow going.
