      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Metal corossion

5 posts in this topic

I thought at this idea and I think it would be very interesting if it will be added.

What if metals, as they do in real life, would be destroyed over time.

As iron rusts over time, in real life, why could not it happen

in Terrafirmacraft? And not just with iron. This can happen with other metals too.

Also, when metals are corroded 100%, you lose them.

And if they are not completely corroded, you can save ,for example, 75% from it.

But obviously, there should be some methods to prevent corrosion:

Welding on the ingot you want to defend from corrosion, a metal sheet, more affected to corrosion.

Alloying a metal, with small amounts of another metal, less affected to corrosion.

Example of an alloy: Stainless steel ingot.

Though it's true that Rust Never Sleeps, irl rusting to the point of actually losing significant amounts of metal is a very, very slow process (unless accelerated by other factors such as salt).  It's not really worth modeling this in game imo.  Lets just assume the player oils their stuff once in awhile.  Magical/alchemical rust is another matter, but would simply be a durability reduction I think, no need to have a separate system.

Beyond that, stainless is a relatively modern invention, and I believe it is impossible for a blacksmith to weld in traditional blacksmithy ways.  The irl methods involve noble gases and arc welding.  Not that either of these couldn't just be ignored - TFC2 after all.  But, they are arguments against it.

I get very afraid with this kind of proposition. I immediately think of the cutting decay system for food. The comparison is valid, food decays and metal oxidizes. The assumption that every day 0.0001% of food is lost for decay or the same amount of metal for oxidizing would just mean another grinding.

What corrosion meant for people in the middle ages was that every time you use a tool you had to clean, dry and oil. As long as metal was kept dry and oiled it would last forever.

In the same relation, grains kept in a sealed dry container last for many years.

I would hate to see a system where we have to constantly worry about metal corrosion and have to clean and oil every single metal every day. The game does not keep track if you used that particular tool or not,

Another issue with this is the stacking system. If each ingot had an individual NBT tag on it to keep track of it's individual corrosion, you wouldn't be able to have stacks of them in your inventory, and you wouldn't be able to have the current ingot piles either.

Another point:

For some metals (zinc is a good example) corrosion is desirable - this forms a hard "crust" of metallic oxide on the outer surface which protects the metal underneath.

So, it's far from being a bad thing :)
