      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Is Flux nothing more than Calcium Carbonate?

5 posts in this topic

I'm actually tryng to create a pack centred about beliveability/realism/educational aspect  and I just discovered an interesting  thing..
I was going to implement Fluorite and other minerals, and suddenly I discovered that apparently the rocks where you get Flux are the same rocks composed mainly by Calcite, otherwise Calcium Carbonate,  CaCO3
Why the decision to call it just Flux without reffering to the chemical composition btw?

*yeah, I know that Cryolite already is a sodium fluoride with traces of aluminum, but I needed pure Fluorite crystals for what I was tryng to accomplish :P*

Pretty sure the term was coined way, way before chemistry was a thing.  I think it has to do with the meaning of flux that is 'to flow', in that it allowed metals to come together and combine easier?  Just a guess.

Calcium carbonate is a flux. Not all flux is a calcium carbonate. And as was said you are applying modern knowledge to what is inspired by ancient times.

Flux is  general name for metal flowing agent, in case of TFC it can be both borax or limestone (the latter is used for smelting only, for soldering you need borax, ammonium chloride, zinc chloride or quick lime - the latter one is just a product of lime calcination is blast furnace during smelting). It is just simplified and generalized.

BTW, in real life cryolite is very rare mineral and nowadays is synthesized from fluorite. I provided such option in my modpack.

Yeah, you are all right guys, mine was just curiosity  :)
I spent some time doing research and I was too tired in that moment to realize these facts
Thanks alot for have replied btw

@Darmo the simplified version is that one, yeah, more likely it's main function (further than ease the combination of metals) is also to prevent oxydations while working them
