Only help if you can be helpful

Hey All, A topic has come up of late in the IRC channel in regards to the general feel of the forums and the community that supports them. Things have progressed further than I would have liked with out this being addressed more publicly because I would much rather have snubbed this out sooner rather than later.. but I have been busy. Here is the general rule I would like people to follow: Wheaton's Law "Don't be a dick." Those of you from the IRC channel know that this is the only rule I ask people in there to follow and we generally have a good and lively time chatting about all manner of things. This is basic rule that just about everyone understands and I am going to expand it to the forums from here moving forward. If you can not help people in a helpful and polite manner then I simply ask you to stop. Now I generally take a back seat to moderating the forums as I like to participate in the suggestions forum fairly heavily at times and would rather do so as a forums user than a moderator. But I am also fairly well known for being the person who constantly puts their foot down and so I am stepping up and doing so on here. If you find yourself unable to respond to a message politely then I ask that you do not respond. This mostly focuses on the increasing level of hostility found within the Suggestion forum as well as the Server forum. I do not care if this is the 30th some odd time you have seen someone make the same suggestion. Or even if the new post on an older topic is one entry above the old one. I expect the members of this forum to respond politely to the user, new or old, and point to the older topic if it applies and even go the extra step to suggest they either add in new information or to summarize the outcome of the previous discussion based upon the new post's entry into it. That is what we are here for, that is why I close most topics instead of deleting them, so that they can be found and referenced down the road. The next topic is the slew of derailment attempts I have seen as of late. If you want to have fun and joke around that is what the off topic forum is for and pretty much anything goes there. I do not expect to read a suggestion thread and have to go through 3 pages of image memes people have shot back and forth. Quite simply this is a waste of my time to read and then have to clean up. Now for the summary. I am going to start taking a more active role, especially in policing the suggestion forum, and handing out warn levels to people whom I see doing this. These will be indiscriminate and applied not to just the first person who derails or is impolite on a topic or response, but to everyone whom follows the lead of that person. As I do not like doing things with out giving you all warning this post shall serve as that warning. If you have a desire to bring this topic up with me then I invite you to do so on the IRC channel. Lets raise the level of quality and grow the community. Let us not descend into the quality often found on the minecraft or league of legend forums. There is simply no need for that here. Be passionate about things, just do not be abusive.

      Offline Servers

Recently I've seen a few server listings showing up on the first page of the Servers forum that have been closed for an extended period of time, but have recently gotten a reply from a new member who didn't realize the server is offline. To help prevent this from happening in the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could use the report function on the original post of any servers that have been confirmed as offline, so that the topic may be locked. If you are the admin of a server and plan on taking the server offline, please use the report function on the original post of your topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be locked. If you are the admin of a server that has a locked topic, and would wish to bring the server back online, please use the report function on the original post of the topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be unlocked. As always, please remember to follow rule #3 of the servers forum and update your topic title to contain the version of TFC that the server is currently running. You can do so by editing the OP, and then clicking on "Use Full Editor."

In Vanilla Minecraft the biggest incentive to go cave spelunking is because it makes easier to spot ores. With the changes that TFC brings to ore generation, we lose that incentive and instead usually avoid mining in caves because of cave-ins.

I still like caves, but maybe we could have some special reason to go there, like some resource that could only be found in caves. Not really sure what it could be. Maybe some Crystals? Or bio phosphorescent lichen and fungus that would be used in potions and magic.

Preferably something that only spawns in caves and cannot be farm artificially. That would make finding a cave a nice thing.

PS: I love building Roads.

I really like that idea! I found there is no need to go into caves, especially now that caves are always a den of 20+ monsters.

I also agree with this. Spelunking should be part of any minecraft experience.

I have a question about axe: how to calculate axe durability? I can cut down big tree (more then 10 blocks) by axe with durability <= 5. But before axe looses durability equal to the logs quantity.

Not all features are fully fleshed out at the moment and are subject to change in future updates.

Re that elk spawn - I think it's the default for all animal spawns - I had a similar thing happen with a mass cow-spawn - there was an amorphous whitish blob in view and as I got closer it exploded into a herd of cows :)

Oh, I got murdered to death long before I starved to death. Enjoying the new version though :D

During testing cutting down a tree has the potential of cutting down touching trees even of a different log type.

Not all trees are fully cut down. Sequoia has two branches that don't get cut.

I has multiple situations with branches or logs which didn't get cut and caused massive floating leaves islands. Try removing this with mobs attacking you from every possible direction :D

All animals are spawned the same way but this party did not move from spawn point a very long time.

how long is a long time? herds will linger for 24 hours (in game time) if they are in a need zone before venturing to a new location.

They stay without moving in approximately 1 game hour (All the time while I was flying around them)

They start moving after my spell to chat "/dbg report"

I have now at long last managed to go through a portal and not be pretty much instantly killed.

It led me to what I can only describe as a winding path through the void, to another portal - whick pretty much instantly killed me.

Is this "path through the void" how the portals are supposed to work?  (I'm quite happy to accept this - it even kinda feels "right"!)

Edit:
I'm currently sitting waitning on another portal exit from the other side of that path - it's been "Loading terrain" for about 20 mins now...

Yes that's how the portals are supposed to work. As far as getting stuck, if you can recreate that world and fly back and give me a "/dbg report" from the portal that you entered I can check it out.

World Seed: [-3245831567207572282] | IslandMap: [0,-2] | PlayerPos: [BlockPos{x=2064, y=85, z=-7411}]

I didn't recreate the world, simply re-loaded it - one thing I have noticed is that when I reload a crashed or portal-to-death world, the portal is ometimes duplicated (a stack of portals on top of one another - I just took a screenshot with 4 portals piggy-backed)

the sytem won't allow me to attach a screen shot, unfortunately

I tried to enter to your portal at [BlockPos{x=2064, y=85, z=-7411}] and my game is halted. After restart I have been at point [BlockPos{x=2064, y=83, z=-7398}] and have seen portal on portal.

Well unfortunately, since the some of the code has changed, that seed is no longer a valid location to find a portal in my dev environment. However I do remember finding that stacking portals bug in the past. Afaik it only happens when the chunks get saved to disk but the game crashes before the islandmap gets saved. This is because the map tracks which hexes have been populated with trees, portals, etc. To combat this, I added some code to scan the hex for a pre-existing portal before placing one.

As far as theinfinite loop with passing through portals, I'll keep trying to track that down.
