Only help if you can be helpful

Hey All, A topic has come up of late in the IRC channel in regards to the general feel of the forums and the community that supports them. Things have progressed further than I would have liked with out this being addressed more publicly because I would much rather have snubbed this out sooner rather than later.. but I have been busy. Here is the general rule I would like people to follow: Wheaton's Law "Don't be a dick." Those of you from the IRC channel know that this is the only rule I ask people in there to follow and we generally have a good and lively time chatting about all manner of things. This is basic rule that just about everyone understands and I am going to expand it to the forums from here moving forward. If you can not help people in a helpful and polite manner then I simply ask you to stop. Now I generally take a back seat to moderating the forums as I like to participate in the suggestions forum fairly heavily at times and would rather do so as a forums user than a moderator. But I am also fairly well known for being the person who constantly puts their foot down and so I am stepping up and doing so on here. If you find yourself unable to respond to a message politely then I ask that you do not respond. This mostly focuses on the increasing level of hostility found within the Suggestion forum as well as the Server forum. I do not care if this is the 30th some odd time you have seen someone make the same suggestion. Or even if the new post on an older topic is one entry above the old one. I expect the members of this forum to respond politely to the user, new or old, and point to the older topic if it applies and even go the extra step to suggest they either add in new information or to summarize the outcome of the previous discussion based upon the new post's entry into it. That is what we are here for, that is why I close most topics instead of deleting them, so that they can be found and referenced down the road. The next topic is the slew of derailment attempts I have seen as of late. If you want to have fun and joke around that is what the off topic forum is for and pretty much anything goes there. I do not expect to read a suggestion thread and have to go through 3 pages of image memes people have shot back and forth. Quite simply this is a waste of my time to read and then have to clean up. Now for the summary. I am going to start taking a more active role, especially in policing the suggestion forum, and handing out warn levels to people whom I see doing this. These will be indiscriminate and applied not to just the first person who derails or is impolite on a topic or response, but to everyone whom follows the lead of that person. As I do not like doing things with out giving you all warning this post shall serve as that warning. If you have a desire to bring this topic up with me then I invite you to do so on the IRC channel. Lets raise the level of quality and grow the community. Let us not descend into the quality often found on the minecraft or league of legend forums. There is simply no need for that here. Be passionate about things, just do not be abusive.

      Offline Servers

Recently I've seen a few server listings showing up on the first page of the Servers forum that have been closed for an extended period of time, but have recently gotten a reply from a new member who didn't realize the server is offline. To help prevent this from happening in the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could use the report function on the original post of any servers that have been confirmed as offline, so that the topic may be locked. If you are the admin of a server and plan on taking the server offline, please use the report function on the original post of your topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be locked. If you are the admin of a server that has a locked topic, and would wish to bring the server back online, please use the report function on the original post of the topic to let the TFC Staff know that the topic should be unlocked. As always, please remember to follow rule #3 of the servers forum and update your topic title to contain the version of TFC that the server is currently running. You can do so by editing the OP, and then clicking on "Use Full Editor."

tfc2:portal returns null in getPickBlock

This causes an error in HWYLA and outright crashes The One Probe.

Edit:

Trying to pick the block crashes Minecraft itself. I don't think this method is supposed to ever return null.

Edit Edit:

Digging into the code for the vanilla portal, Minecraft doesn't use getPickBlock at all in the BlockPortal and just uses the method it inherits from Block.  Since Item.getItemFromBlock gets null from BlockPortal it returns Items.AIR to Block.getItem.

So shouldn't it work as expected if you don't touch getPickBlock at all in TFC's BlockPortal?

Hey bioxx as you said you want to use other mods to help do thinks aka pam's. I just want to know if you've looked in to chisel and bits to help with well the chiselling. Loving the alpha worlds are looking good keep up the good work

I've used chisel and bits, and it's quite good. I have not looked into any sort of compatibility and probably won't as its functionality really isn't necessary for TFC2. I'll leave that up to them if they wish to support TFC2 or not.

I would personally love the C&B compat if for nothing else than the availability to do detailed builds  (which i am dead awful at. Lol) though i can understand not wanting to dig into extra work at this junction if its not nessicary. Same reason i havent suggested compat for any tech mods as of yet. Keep up the awesome work bioxx, but take breaks. Burnout is a bitch

I've messed around some with Chisels & Bits in the pre-alpha, and most TFC2 blocks seem compatible already.  Just a couple of things like grass blocks wouldn't let me chisel them.

Personally, I'm going to miss TFC food. I think it was pretty iconic, and the realistic farming was fun too.

TFC2 0.1.7 created a new creative world and terrain generation did not occur at all. Hung my computer with grey transparent screen that you could see moon and sun through. Could not get seed as it never got that far, map was never saved. Created another creative world and got spawned just off the coast under the water. Explored that world and found the massive wall of water reported before as well as mega-spires as seen in screenshots. Seed was 6271473061952341174. Seed for world regen was -5935814643154413898.

I thought I forgot something - I added the /dbg report info to the spoilers. This particular map brings my 4 core Intel I5 to a crawl when loading terrain. Of course it is a laptop with an Intel 3000 GFX built in :-( Thanks so much for working on TFC2 Bioxx! I reallllllllllly LOVE how this is looking so far! The hexes and streams with the trees make such a HUGE difference in the feel of the game.

Those spires are not a bug, they are just a crappy implementation of a feature. I'll look into the other thanks.

Updated to 0.1.8

Firepits now require 4 straw in addition to the previously needed resources.

Notable new feature is the addition of pitkilns and pottery. They work a bit differently now than they used to. After you find some clay(for now always near freshwater) right click with them in your hand to open the ui and craft your clay object. Next, right click on the ground in a 2 deep pit with the clay item to place it down(only 1 item can fit in a block) then right click with straw 4 times. Use a firstarter until you see flames begin to rise from the straw. Now quickly add a log on top of the straw, and then a piece of dirt/gravel/sand on top of that. If you did everything correctly and fast enough, you should see smoke rising from the top of the pile. After 8 in-game hours you can dig up the pottery. This process also creates a small amount of charcoal now which must be shoveled from the block before you can retrieve your item.

I have just installed the new prerelaese and found these bugs:

When finished pottery is broken instead of right clicked it doesnt give you anything.

Drinking out of jug doesnt fill up thirst bar.

When gamerule doMobSpawning is set to false TFC2 mobs still spawn when generated in new chunks. (Also I know that mobs arent finished, but why the heck does fox kill you in one hit?)

World Seed: [-1061424437646769833] | IslandMap: [0,-2] | PlayerPos: [BlockPos{x=1202, y=74, z=-5490}]

Also just started with pams and it doesnt work. When seed is planted it wont grow and when broken it gives just one fruit (or whatever it is) which upon pickup desapears from inventory. Reloging doesnt fix it. BTW love this update.

Could've sworn that the jug was working properly at one point :/ Anyways its fixed now, thanks.

As for gameRules, I rarely if ever support those. If support is added its because I need it for testing or Kitty comes behind me and adds that kind of stuff. Just not worth my time.

Hi Bioxx, I found what seem to be two bugs.

- After TFC Music began to play, I pushed the "Music" slider to left so that it read 0%, so that I wouldn't have to hear it. No offense! :o Then once I resumed the game, the music resumed but at the beginning of its loop (meaning the music restarted).

- I wasn't able to obtain straw from certain types of grass.

Making a clay item takes only 1 clay.  While the clay blocks seem to yield quite a lot.  Wasn't sure if this was the plan or not.  Would really love to be able to have torches.

Hum, SMP only : sometimes i can't knap, sometime i can, really odd :0

(SSP) I have an another problem, my brother and i, can't make a firepit, we throw down 4 rock, 4 stick and at least 1 log (we try with 2, 3, even with 64), and fire with starter but, there is only smoke and spark, no fire pit :'( (i try to fire with 5 starters, nothing!)

So i watch some video on youtube, but they do exactly the same i did, but it works for them and not for me :(

Edit : Daaamn, i read somewhere i need to add 4 straw now :0 (0.1.8)

So, I downloaded 0.1.8.

These are the things I met while crossing an island I spawned on. Not all of them are bugs - some are minor issues or things that I find strange. Some of them are propositions. I will drop it all here, so you don't have to read this in "Suggestion" forum, too. I will mark red the things I see as bugs and green the things I propose to improve the atmosphere and feelings from the mod.

Please, enjoy this wall-of-text:

0) After loading into the world the server part of the game did not respond - block broke w/o drops, and after a minute I was lagported to the spawnpoint and since then game behaved normally.

1) When cutting high grass with knife, if I break top block then bottom block, I get 2 straw; if I break bottom first, I get 1 straw (top breaks itself, no drops). That not how real grass works.

2) Clay looks like sand.

3) Water sometimes doesn't flow.

4) Rivers are still cut on waterfalls sometimes.

5) I'm in peaceful. Hunger bar doesn't drop (so I can't eat), but nutrients bar do drop, lowering my hp a bit. And the thirst bar drops, too. Either all bars should drop or none in peaceful.

6) Rivers still start with 1 meter drop from lake level.

7) What about adding some local portals - connecting with other local portals along the island? A connects to B, and B connects to A. This will add a bit more value to scouting.

8) Sometimes, hexes become visible - when 2 borders of the cliff or hole are parallel to X. I think you should either add some noise, rotate or distort the hexes a bit.

9) When you rightclick on the laying stone with a block (of wood, in my case), you get the stone dropped and the block you clicked gets placed and disappears. When you try to place the next block from the same slot in the clean place, all blocks lost "due to laying stones" reappear.

10) When you click on the block with laying stone on it - and not on the stone itself - stone disappears with no drops. Is that intended?

11) High hexagonal cliffs look a bit lamy. Sorry, Bioxx, but its true. You need height noise, rotation, distortion or some "erosia" pass (or all of that, shaked and mixed).

12) When stacked things expire (rotten meat), they loose 1 thing of stack and restart the timer.

13) Cotton is a snack.

14) River generation is not bad, but how about more natural way of doing it? Like, making a height gradient map or something? I'll try some algorithm myself.

15) What about adding a stationary water with direction, drag and the sounds of a flow? It will add a buttload of atmosphere.

16) Swamps have holes in the water sometimes, looks strange. It might be due to incoming rivers (are they trying to do an unnesessary dropdown?).

17) All the grass in the swamp is 2 meter tall - as if it was cut with some giant razor. Maybe, randomize it a bit? And I don't remember 2-meter grass growing in swamps.

18) How about placing a "sea sound effect" blocks in the sea somewhere? Because the silence is not the sound of seas. Again, easy, buttload of atm.

19) Trees in "fancy" look niiiice, but framerate doesn't.

20) After going through tfc forest, I feel my real face all being cut by 2-meter-high grass. When I last time was in forest, the grass was 0.5m max. It just doesn't grow in forests due to the lack of light. But ferns and bushes do. The lack of diversity of grass height (what about 1.5 m grass, btw?) plays against the atmosphere.

21) And the leaves don't start from 2 meter high. Again, no light - no photosynthesis - no leaves. Except pines, they don't care.

22) I forgot how to bonfire. Can we have a `help` command which teaches us how to do simplest of things? As the player unable to lit a fire cannot enjoy the mod in its full.

23) Sounds of wind (and, maybe, birds) in the forest will be good.

24) It would be nice, if swampy land and water diminished player moving speed (gods save you from quicksand-like effects!).

25) What about placing markers pointing to the nearest portal? Like, the portal could be in 45-degree cone from the direction the marker points.

26) When you place last block on the laying stone, the block disappears. Nothing could be placed from that slot. But if you place other block in the wild, the initial, disappeared is placed first (vertically, btw - it was wood in my case) and then the block you're actually trying to place is put down in quick succession - on the same ray you look.

27) When you do the same as in 26) but you place some other block in the slot, things get messy.

27) The high grass loves to grow in pits, btw.

28) Seems like you using linear metric instead of von Neumann one to update the tree thunks and leaves.

29) I created a new world and there was music! Wow! (And chestnut!)

30) I think we need another biome with dense bushes, up to 2-3 meters.

31) Maybe, sometimes portal should spawn broken?

N) Forum bug - if I add a file to the post and then remove it, it will still diminish my upload limit.
