    How do you play TFC?

    Kittychanley

If you have a moment please cast your votes regarding how you play TFC. If you have friends who play TFC, we would greatly appreciate if you spread the word and ask them to vote as well. It only takes a second, and the results give us better insight on TFC's playerbase.

    How do I play TFC?
Usually with long periods of intense silent concentration broken by explosions of cursing and arm flailing following a cave-in.
    Also multiplayer, no whitelist.

This poll is quite the eye-opener, considering TFC is aimed towards multiplayer gameplay ;)

Maybe you should consider to make it a more satisfying experience for us singleplayers too?

And I thought I was in the minority ...

I thought single players were a minority too.. I mostly play on whitelisted MP servers because i couldn't get rid of periodic LSOD in single player.. But i surely prefer a single player game than the risk of being griefed

As i see why mp decreases ists more for the comunity of player than for the game itself. I only play with friends and we all agree that TFC its the best mod to play mp. Wish more people play this mod as it go forward.

I did that too in the beginning, but then it became just (for me) like sp with a chat log. Was nice tho. But never played TFC on MP. This was with vanilla minecraft.

I wish I have friends that play mc/tfc :)) like Thorin sad: we are to old :(

I'm going to be honest, I'm 43 years "young" :D but I have different priorities than most. I have to be 24/7 available because of work, others have children for example.

This isn't directly relevant data for TFC itself, but this morning Dinnerbone published an interesting graph detailing Minecraft PC userbase activity for the past month.

    http://media.dinnerbone.com/uploads/2015-01/screenshots/28_17-17-36_xgAoXyHf0V.png

While not as granular as what's being queried here, it was nonetheless interesting to see that on average SSP has 100k more people playing it on any given day (the reality being that SSP and SMP seem to go neck-and-neck in the morning but SSP leaps ahead in the evening).  This is interesting to me because the Bukkit community has tried upselling their importance for a couple years now on the meme that more people play SMP and that since Bukkit is(/was) the premiere way to have large servers with massive player counts, that it was overall super-important because everybody would stop playing Minecraft on PC without it.

Also, having previously heard some (internal to FTB) metrics bandied around regarding the size of the modded player base, it's more substantial than has been considered previously.  This underestimation was a factor in the poor treatment the Forge/FML developers got from the Bukkit crew (they were flat out told by one mouthy Bukkit-er that modded gameplay had the lower hand to play and was thus not invited to the table to try and make an integrated solution), and is ultimately what made things like MCPC+ and Cauldron turn out to be fragile solutions held together by heroic efforts of third parties.

Interesting food for thought, even if it isn't in direct application here and doesn't answer any questions on server size/composition as is being asked.

That is a nice graph Vauthil. But sadly Morning and Evening doesn't mean squat to me without a connection to a timezone (and we have 24 of these ;) ) So could I have some more sauce on this, because I don't follow Dinnerbone.

Unfortunately, this came as part of a tweet and not a more comprehensive analysis.  The key message to me, though, is that on average SSP play for PC Minecraft players generally tends to be slightly higher rather than the formerly oft-mentioned meme that SMP is the core play style for the PC Minecraft user base and SSP is insignificant in comparison.  This was something the Bukkit community in particular tried to push on us for years on why they were so important and got to have the privilege of treating others as they did, and was at the core of why we have such a stress-filled situation now for server owners wanting servers with Forge-type mods but also Bukkit-type add-ons (which I actually do tend to agree are pretty darn necessary for large pop servers).

Really it's trivia and it's interesting (to me) but it's only tangentially related to the core topic of this survey. =)

Since 1000 votes have already been cast, it would be interesting to get a statement by the Devs? (incl. Kitty of course ...)

Interesting rrading the 'too old to play MP' comments.

I wonder just how old these players are? I'm over 50 and can still play MP with those under half my age with no problems - or perhaps I'm still a kid at heart? lol  One interestingthing this poll is showing is that almost half of those who vted (45% at present) play Singe Player... No wonder they aren't bugged by the torches dying out after 2 MC days, or food decay...

I'm not sure what kind of statement you are looking for. I put up the poll after some discussion in this topic, and the claim that public, non-whitelisted servers made up 90% of TFC's players.

It would appear that everyone's claims in that thread were quite off the mark.

That aside, it would appear that public, non-whitelisted servers *do* have a very significant plurality of the multiplayer player base, the very player base TFC claims to be designed for.

Edit: Now a majority of the multiplayer player base.

Lol @ "kid at heart", I consider that as a good thing.

In my mind (probably wrong) mp-servers are filled with kids 1/5 of "our" age.

maybe I should hop on one day (preferably one in CET zone) and learn.

I think it's worth noting that I only play singleplayer because until recently, I had a comptuer that could barely run TFC, and low framerates combined with latency and lack of adequate skill to compensate amount to a very bad experience.

Different polls would be more interesting for me. I would like to see - how many people actually can play on a TFC based multiplayer project, regardless of if it is a Cauldron or just Forge server? In my experience, most TFC servers start freezing and lagging when 20+ players connect. That sort of poll could actually answer on  - why are there mostly singleplayer gamers in TFC-MC? It was always quite hard to manage a good TFC mp-project due to many reasons, not just the "unsupported" Cauldron.

I personally voted 4-"Public" MultiPlayer whitelisted server (not that anyone cares though =] ). And it is a 18+ whitelist aswell - kids with their parents are allowed though. We did add more content than just TFC, and we do use different anti-griefing plugins\mods too.

But thinking of how much time and work it takes to actually go through updating everything we have already... it's just not worth it.

What I think (and I guess it may be considered totally inappropriate here) is that TFC is not a mod for a game, it is a different game itself already. What holds TFC from growing into a real multiplayer experience is the base it is built on, which is Minecraft itself. Wouldn't most of those singleplayer gamers prefer to play TFC with other people on a good mp-project - is also a good question here, so as - what actually holds them from playing mp right now.

I could probably add a lot of suggestions into those threads started lately, about what admin tools are needed in TFC to have what we add by using Cauldron, but I see no point for that. I know that vast amount of that stuff just can't be implemented in closest months even if it will be worked on. And there is sponge development... and cauldron is dead... and so is bukkit and craftbukkit... and spigot is all about patches over patches now... and bugs are just everywhere...

What I would be happy is a better engine for TFC multiplayer experience. Let's face it, minecraft and ForgeAPI just can't handle TFC, while TFC actually replaces vanilla =] And while MC and TFC growth, this problem growth aswell, and TFC just "becomes more and more singlplayer".

WIth changing this being impossible atm aswell, I end my stupid offtopic rant =]

I play SP for the lack of friends that play TFC -_-

Then come play with us in Darkagecraft. We are always looking for players and can be very friendly.

Well, that's eye-opening. I do play some Whitelisted multiplayer, but my primary play is singleplayer because I often have to pause to deal with life. As it turns out I'm not alone in my playstyle, but in the VAST majority.

Maybe we'll see a little less of the flippant, arrogant dismissal of SP concerns and suggestions from certain entities?
