    News from the Front

    Bioxx

I promised some news on where things are headed with the anniversary post and I think its about time to at least let you guys in on where things stand. I'll put things bluntly first and then expound.

1.8 sucks. TFC will not be ported to 1.8.

I say this only halfheartedly however. Some of the changes that 1.8 has brought to the table are actually very welcome in the grand scheme of things. However it feels like it was released with no regard for modders whatsoever. This is my personal reaction and I know that it is actually a bit harsh as I'm aware at the level of interaction that Mojang has with the Forge team and others.

I won't go into too many details about all the little and big things that they've changed which have really stuck a dagger through any plans to port TFC. Suffice to say a great many things, most notably chiseling, appear to be impossible at this time to bring into the new rendering system that Mojang has so graciously *Rolls Eyes* bestowed upon us. There are a number of other things that also make porting the existing codebase into 1.8 far more trouble than it is worth as well.

Now what does all of this mean? It means that TFC will not be porting beyond 1.7. Even if a way is provided to deal with all of the new rendering issues, there are other things that would require us to essentially rewrite TFC in order to deal with.

So a rewrite is what will happen. Very, very, very slowly. Some of you may remember my old TFC2 project from long ago. That is being revived in some incarnation as the next iteration of TFC. Nothing is entirely set in stone beyond the fact that I plan to take my time with this one. As more plans are solidified, I'll be sure to fill you guys in. As far as TFC Build 80 and beyond are concerned, we will continue to add more content for 1.7 and polish the game.

Dont worry, your new light source is still coming.

    Edit added by Kittychanley:

For a bit of clarification since there seems to be some misunderstanding of the above final paragraphs.

    • TFC "Beta" (i.e. Versions that start with 0.#) will not be ported beyond Minecraft 1.7.10
    • TFC2, a complete rewrite of TFC "Beta" is currently planned for Minecraft 1.8, but will take a very long time before it is released.

A complete rewrite... that sounds like a heap of work. Thanks for everything, Bioxx.

I thinks it is a good idea to stay on 1.7.10.

I don't really like mods that just updates and adds nothing.

Anyway TFC is like a whole new game based on minecraft's engine. I don't care about it staying to 1.7.10.

    Thanks for the great mod.

While it's unfortunate that TFC won't be taking advantage of anything new moving forward, I have to admit it's actually kind of a big relief that it's being version locked. I'm kind of tired of the "Wait for the mods I use to be updated" routine whenever there's a big update, MCP never keeping up with the update cycle so nothing updates, etc.  If Minecraft some day becomes easier for TFC to update to, then great, but seeing this news doesn't make me unhappy.

Personally I'd like the TFC team to be able to work on their own time and not have to worry about prepping for 1.8. Now they can just focus on the features they had in mind and not what 1.8 let them do. Either way thanks for everything guys :D!

Just want to point out since a few of you appeared to have misunderstood the final paragraph. TFC is not ending with 1.7.10. The first version of TFC is ending with 1.7.10.

TFC development will continue on to 1.8 and likely any future versions of Minecraft. We're just rewriting TFC from scratch and creating TFC2 instead.

It's fine to stay with 1.7, the decision makes perfect sense. Thank you for the mod.

Hey, I just made this account in order to suggest that you guys just starting making your own game (separate from Minecraft)... It would obviously be a lot of work but you wouldn't ever have to fight Mojang like this. Also, it might not be that much extra work compared to a complete rewrite.

It's a huge piece of work to make a game with MC-like engine and TFC-game. If you don't belive look at Minetest's sources.

A complete rewrite aye? Might as well skip version 1.8 and see if MC 1.9 and beyond will not completely change things again...

Thanks for deciding to continue the mod onto 1.8 as well.

I am aware that much discussion has happened on this point already, but I still think it is worth mentioning because of this new circumstance.

Since you are effectively working on a rewrite would you please switch food measurements from ounces and fluid ounces to metric measurements for TFC2? Or can you at least code it so measurements and weights can be switched to Metric or Imperial units by players, based on their personal preference?

So basically all the servings and proportions are stored in Metric or Imperial lookup tables or config files and can be switched between. There are a lot of nutrition and dietary guides from around the World that use ml and grams for you to simply use out of the box, for this preference. Of the many out there, the Canadian food guide is one such good starting point, if you need an "Americas" centric point of reference for food to start off.

I definitely think that would be one very welcome change for a lot of your players. :)

    Many thanks in advance.

Last Tuesday (31 March) on TFC Tuesday with Pakratt13 and friends, there was mention of an update this weekend... I'm curious...

Was it an early April 1 joke?
