      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Roadmap

The unreal engine has its own programming language and you have to develop the game "around" the engine. A minecraft mod is written in java, which is quite simple but powerful, and the engine just takes the data (the blocks etc) that is stored somewhere in memory and it displays it. It's 10 times more work and only makes sense if you see some money on the other end
  2. Roadmap

The gfx engine is the issue, for a one man team or even a small team coding around an engine is a full time job.
  3. Roadmap

I am checking the github on a weekly basis, it sure looks deserted atm. The problem with a mod is that forge and mc are getting further and further away. The playable TFC is for forge 1.7.10 and minecraft is now 1.12.2. You are at mojangs mercy. If they decide to change a lot, forge will adapt, they have to and so do you. At some point you are working more on adapting than actually progressing with the project. I personally made my peace with the fact that mc is not suitable for the amount of detail that i would want in a project like this, it is simply a game of rough blocks and mechanics of a similar scope. You chop a tree block and you get ready-to-use wood logs, just stick them onto rock or whatever and they hold etc. I am still playing the old TFC because of its uniqueness and the lack of real survival games, i would love to see TFC2 but i am not expecting it.
  4. Because of the topic with the easiest simple shelter i started a couple new worlds and played them each some hours to see if there was a general guideline that i could give ppl. Finding first food and shelter is easy enough if you know a few MC basics on monster spawns and the TFC changes. In every world i was sitting there with some food for a month, about 15 seeds planted that might grow before winter. After about a month i found enough ore to make a saw and or pickaxe and with that i am technically set. There is really no reason for wanting iron other that wanting it. With a copper saw you can make everything from barrels (food and preservation) to all wooden tools like the loom or a bed (IF you can find some sheep) to doors and stuff. The last time i just dug a 2 deep ditch around a spot and dug myself a hole at night and placed log-stashes around me so i was 100% safe. Because i had no wool, i had to sit the night out but because of the spawn protection i could even work close to my safezone. And i began to wonder "what kind of house should i build this time ?". And right now there is no reason why one should build a shelter. Monsters can be held off by simple means, a roof can be constructed like a giant umbrella or one of those party pavillions... but why build a shelter with a door etc ? I feel that this is where the game has one of the biggest gaps between gameplay and reality. Rain and cold would kill you in reality but in MC/TFC they just dont matter and as they dont matter the seasons only matter in terms of food production but they dont threaten your health. Running around in heavy rain, wet to the bone, at near freezing temps... who cares ?! Just cut trees, farm your animals, weather is just an optical gimmick... and i feel that this is a part that need work sooner or later. discussion welcome
  5. Just a question, as there are the detailed blocks and ofc there have always been stairs, shouldnt it be possible to change the world generation so that hills no longer have this terrace look ? I dont mind so much in rocky terrain (real mountains) but with dirt, esp in TFC as dirt drops down if there is more height difference than 2. If there was a dirt-stairs-block whenever the terrain goes up or down, dirt landscapes (sand as well!) would look 10 times better. Is it possible ? If yes, is it hard to do (time vs benefit consideration) ? Would it lag more ?
  6. No kitty, i do like the mod and MC in general, its just that i want more! What makes me bitchin is that all i seem to hear (from you) is that a) this mod isnt supposed to have that/be like that cannot be done c) for some reason wouldnt be good. Why can't you say something like "sounds like a cool idea, lets see how we could implement that" ?! edit: +bitchin is in my nature
  7. I keep an eye out for all those survival games but they all are so dumb and shallow and 90% are vs zombies or monsters. Stranded Deep is like the worst BS of them. I understand the OP, many of you know the feeling, once you are set in your shelter, the game suddenly drops in difficulty. Food is always there, mobs can be kept outside or avoided by sleeping. Right now one way would be to change configs to more harsh values, like crops dying if not harvested etc but imho thats nuances. It is NO challenge to plant 10*10 blocks of every food ressource. Planting and harvesting happens in an instant! Harvesting was one of the major chores for the stoneage ppl. An entire tribe went onto the fields for days to harvest the grains. Processing them was so hard that archeologists found deformed skeletons of children who had to process grains all day long so that their bodys grew in the wrong way. But they had to do that if they wanted to survive. In TFC/MC you harvest by clicking on the food and thats it. My latest world i have up to 40°C in the summer, i had NO DAY OF RAIN the entire summer, but a 5*7 puddle of water that NEVER dried out supplied all the fields with water... what a dreamland. Because in winter the temps never drop below 5 i can plant throughout the year, easy, harvest twice a year... There is no config to change most of these things as they are MC based. With 2*2 of water and a (steel) bucket you have infinite water... WTF The amount of time i have to spend on turning ore into metals is 10 times as much as i need to plant and harvest food. It should be the other way around but someone on the dev team really had a thing for petrology/geology and not much interest in botany... its ok, we all have our things. Just sayin, i dont need another bigmac ok ?! just peaceful conversation
  8. at BK you WOULD find a BigMac, they just dont call it that The mod is "the next best thing" and it could be more but i understand that you devs have a different direction in mind, nontheless i will stick around and play it and give you feedback, sorry.
  9. this is a game, not real life simulator Can you tell me ONE real life sim that features proper stone age to med age stuff ? because there is none! Thats why a lot of ppl end up here i guess
  10. Hiding through the first few nights

Imho the biggest bulls**t in MC is that you cannot sleep without a bed. You could just lie on the grass and fall asleep, monsters aside. Because the game has no stamina system, you cant allow the players to sleep everywhere for less recovery benefit because it simply means no players needs a bed and everyone skips the night so monsters are obsolete etc pp MC is a very narrow sandbox
  11. Nifty tricks

Emergency food (infinite storage time): keep a barrel full of curdled milk, do not seal it. Once you run out of food, seal the barrel and wait one night and BAM, big fresh cheese.
  12. Brass

And why does a bloomery require any metal at all ? It was built by the romans simply with clay. I mean you ask why stuff is misleading and maybe the answer is that for outsiders or new players a lot of stuff is just not intuitive and being ultra petty about historical details that no one knows without checking the wiki just to justify how stuff made it into the game is NOT helping. You need a copper anvil to make a bronze anvil... but you can have bronze ingots before copper ones. But can't make stuff out of brass, because somewhen three millenia ago they only made shiny non-tool objects out of the stuff... objects that you CANT make in this game/mod but the material for them DOES exist! It doesn't make a lot of sense and i say that as an experienced player in this mod.
  13. Brass

Another question that should fit in here: Why can you make an Anvil out of Rose Gold but nothing else ? Its those 2 metals/alloys that are a bit confusing (along with all the ones that you can find and turn into ingots but have absolutely no use...)
  14. How are you guys dealing with caves?

Yeah thats how i meant it, dig up the 3 blocks above the support beam(s) and then remove the old support and build a new one one higher. Afaik something is wrong or not well explained with the cave-ins however. Somehow a support beam only prevents the known layer of blocks to START a cave-in. However the check if there is something to come down sometimes expands and causes blocks "on the other side" of a wall or in some other cave to be triggered. When i am inside caves and i dig down, perfectly safe, i hear caveins below me or somewhere in the area but all i am doing is digging down. In a cave however, what is a floor for one cave is a ceiling for the one below and that somehow mixes up... I just avoid caves, they are endless circles that don't really help
  15. How are you guys dealing with caves?

you can mine the 3 blocks above a standard support beam setup, then make the support one higher.
  16. Brass

Another possibility is language, if you are not native english you might not have a clue what brass actually is and may confuse it with something else, as there are 3 bronze types it could be confused with a 4th one.
  17. Brass

Brass and Bronze is right next to eachother with similar %, so why would one be a tool metal and the other one not ?! If you can make stuff out of pure copper, then why the hell not make stuff out of brass ? If i read wikipedia it says that real brass usage started in the 17th century but that there was a form of brass used already 300 BC.. IMHO it should be removed completely, its only use is to make red steel more complicated and does not have any serious historic meaning.
  18. I am missing reasons to build a shelter

But if its only distance, then how can i seal off a room, a basement etc to keep it cool for food storage ? If i have to dig down 10 blocks that would ruin MY way of building rather realistic houses...
  19. How are you guys dealing with caves?

I never bother with caves, too much trouble. With those ravines everywhere you can easily access deeper rock layers and there is almost every ore somewhere on the surface.
  20. I am missing reasons to build a shelter

As far as i understood, doing a simple calculation as in "what kind of block is at x,y,z" is a simple method call, assigning a block or value to that block is more of an issue. What would be possible and what is my current idea, is to find a simple 3 dimensional space that is dead-on within a shelter. If the house is very "artistic" this may lead to complications but most ppl build pretty simple. The fireplace could store that info and whenever you are close to the fireplace you could ask it "am i within your space". Something like that.
  21. Scaled world generation

lol kitty, sometimes you take things a biiiiit too seriously
  22. Scaled world generation

There is this story you know... *caugh* "Around the World in Eighty Days".
  23. I am missing reasons to build a shelter

oh cool, 16 states gives even more options. This is a point where gameplay can kick in. States like "a bit warm", "warmer", "really warm", "hot" and "way too hot" would suffice. If there is no air block its ambient temp, if there is an airblock it could be ambient temp + a fixed value. So it jumps in 5° celsius steps, who cares, that doesnt really change a thing. I would even go so far to say ONLY if ambient temp is below 20°C a "warm air block" raises the temp to exactly 20°C. Could be immediatly, so you light the firepit and the entire house is temperated. That would go along with the extremely short daytime of MC. If i have to wait one minute or not for the house to heat up doesnt make a difference. I would start a fire, leave the house, come back in the evening and the house should still be warm. Lets say after the fire goes out, the air blocks stay for 8 hours or so and then simply vanish. It would do its job. Heat up a house in wintertime, so outside is cold and inside the shelter is normal and with body temp you can recover inside.
  24. I am missing reasons to build a shelter

Well then one could let the fireplace spawn "temperated air blocks" like water. The second they enter a coordinate that is not under a roof, it stops. Would be easy for the player to check if he is standing in warm air or not. Sure there would be exploits etc but if the solution should target the 80% of players who play normally.
  25. Scaled world generation

Is it possible to actually scale the entire world ? Right now it feels a bit small, 1k blocks is traveled within a day by horse if not far more. Traveling from the arctic to the equator within 2 days is a bit boring.
