      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Cartography

I personally think of this less as a cartography tool than just more of a scribing implementation. You have paper, ink (and dye), and quill, you should be able to draw whatever you want (Eventually binding them into books as well). You could type text as well. No need to chain it to specifically making maps. You can draw whatever you want, be it a map, a sign, a painting, a note, etc. This way, it becomes a skill based activity. Don't like to draw? Well you either go without it, or you buckle up and figure out a way to make it work. Same applies for prospecting. Don't like the puzzle aspect with false negatives sending you each and every direction (that a bunch of people complain about)? Find someone else to do it, or buckle up and figure out a way to make it work. So as you can probably tell, I'm on the side that nothing gets generated. Climb up high to a tall mountain/cliff/hill and draw what you see. Create pillars to act as man-made landmarks. Mark your 'maps' accordingly. But that's just my two cents.
  2. the alpha caveman

Those posts look like they are about REDSTONE. This post is about making contraptions WITHOUT REDSTONE. I completely forgot that there are still ways to make devices without redstone. The power of water is pretty great. Of course, anything made without redstone is going to be pretty basic, but it still opens the door to make things like transport routes possible. I really haven't tried to test anything though, so it would be cool to see if anyone has made anything technologically advanced, in terms of TFC!
  3. Chivalry in Minecraft?

Would a combat overhaul be great? Sure! But to try to emulate Chivalry would be, misplaced? Chivalry combat hinges a lot on strategy; taking advantage of opponent blocks, countering on missed swings, things like that. Combat like that in TFC is taking it a little over the top. We're here to survive, not duel it out with a zombie. I think TFC just needs a little more variety in its combat. So if we're using Chivalry as an example still, we could definitely take some of the actions you can perform and port them here. An overhead swing and a jab/stab attack like in Chivalry would be neat. But these aren't Chivalry exclusive actions, so to say that we would be emulating Chivalry would be false. I get where you're coming from, though. Chivalry definitely has a fun combat style!
  4. TFC Birthday Contest Discussion Thread

I would imagine that all projects would receive the same level of critique. But that's just me... and I'm not judging this contest! I'm assuming Bioxx is looking for something that really shows what TFC is all about, and therefore wants you to make something magnificent to show this mod off, hence being able to construct in Creative.
  5. Temperature bar

I understand that you want to add something more besides the typical loss of thirst/hunger. I guess I'm overreacting, thinking that if I just wander into a cold area I will start to feel the debuffs. I like this. Maybe I was too quick to dismiss the debuffs. It would be neat (and believable) if you started to gain debuffs if you stopped moving in a cold climate/sprint too much in a hot climate. Normal activity will not cause debuffs to occur. Although I do think that you have to stay with the idea that hotter climates make thirst drain faster and colder climates make hunger drain faster (need more fuel to keep your body warm).
  6. Temperature bar

You don't get what I'm saying. If you've ever experienced debuffs, they are annoying. I think you can handle temperatures affecting the player in a better, less annoying way by having them affect thirst/hunger levels. I think it's better for players to see their thirst and hunger levels drop (realize they have to move out of the area, or be better prepared next time) rather than hamstring them for certain death.
  7. You cant skip the night

I do think it's kind of silly to be able to just plop down a bed and sleep out in the open. I did it for the first few nights in my new world and it just felt, I don't know, like cheating? I didn't have to worry about ANYTHING. No mobs woke me up. Nothing. A simulated world while in bed? I'm all in for that. I really like it because it would allow you to go take a nap during the day - which helps re-gen health. It would also be great to have crops/trees grow as well. Being able to dig and hole and hang out in it for the night is a hard thing to combat. Running around at night is deadly as it is now. Skeletons are super annoying. I don't think there is any way to really get around that. When you start playing TFC, you have to be on the ball, get your materials, and set up a shelter. If you don't, try your luck running around, or dig yourself a hole and go get something to eat (IRL).
  8. I usually want to destroy things when I'm angry, not happy... but to each his own!
  9. Temperature bar

I like this. No extra bars to check up on. Continuing on this topic, temperature is already implemented, so what you want is for temperature to affect the player more? It seems that it does affect thirst level already, which is good. Blurred vision when too hot? I'm on board for that. The only thing I don't really like is adding in debuffs. If you have ever died in TFC and had to make your way back somewhere through a night filled with skeletons with the Slowness debuff, it is major ANNOYING. I know, TFC = hardcore, but you can be hardcore without these debilitating debuffs. Have temperature affect things like health, hunger, and thirst in the BG, and it will be a convincing obstacle for players. Don't make it an annoying one.
  10. Yea, wouldn't code have to be changed that so things can be placed on half blocks? I'm assuming this would be a big undertaking. If you had a rolling hill with half its blocks as half-blocks, you'd effectively reduce the amount of ground you could place trees, grass, flowers on by half. Floating trees be ugly. There were some very nice pictures of rolling hills from that 'new dawn' terrain generator that ultimately went open source. Now THAT would be great! I thought Bioxx and Dunk talked about making changes to terrain gen every so often (since it requires new worlds to be created) so hopefully we see things slowly working towards something cool like this. Cool pictures!
  11. Yeah, I just noticed this last night. I usually don't build with logs, but when I did, I got this unexpected orientation of the texture. I would say no big deal, but since I was actually trying to make my house look nice, it bugged me!
  12. I bet that thread on chisel creations is going to explode!! We'll see who the real artists are now; you will be able to sculpt so many detailed things! You know what the sad part is? I'm not thinking about survival now, I'm thinking about making amazing sculptures to decorate my worlds! The game has been derailed!
  13. This just insane. I cannot wait to try this out.
  14. Rainfall and making trees grow

Wow I didn't know trees would grow so close to one another...
  15. New Let's Play

Balls. My old PC that was running my server just pooped itself. I lost all my world saves (I guess when you back up to the SAME machine the servers are running on, there stands the chance you might loose everything...). So THIS series is over. If only build 70 was released I could start a new one up... Sorry for double post. As far as I'm concerned, this thread is dead.
  16. New Let's Play

Why hello. I decided to start up a let's play for terrafirmacraft. I love watching videos of people playing and wanted to share my experiences as well! As of now, it's just me on my server, but I'm hoping to get my brother to join me at some point in the future. Let me know what you think! (I know the first few days can be very boring, but I'm hoping to ramp up quickly with blacksmithing, meals, exploration, building, etc.) Here is Episode 01: Episode 02:
  17. Will all trees eventually work like the fruit trees?

    Exactly. Exactly.
  18. Encouraging specialization

True dat. Nothing introduced here was a detriment to solo play anyways.
  19. It's in the OP too silly! And most people actually ask for an easier pro-pick. These suggestion make a little harder I think.
  20. Well this whole thread is talking about suggestions for mining, and in part, pro-picks.
  21. Encouraging specialization

I don't see how you could overlook single players though. This mod offers so much in terms of overhauling survival that it would be a shame to base the game around having to work WITH other people in order to even play. Really that only applies if you're trying to make specialization playable as a solo player, which is silly. You can't expect to survive on your own without doing everything yourself. So maybe that was a silly idea to have trade depot spawn so that single players can specialize but still get everything else they need. Solo players can't specialize.
  22. Hmm this is very interesting. Now we are taking away the visual cues (both textures and how the pro-pick reads) and also making pro-pick (I think) a bit trickier. It sounds very cool.... My only concern is how much more time consuming is this going to make searching for metal. I wouldn't want this to get so complicated that it takes a long time to find things; it might turn off the more casual users of this mod (which turn out to be no-so-casual in terms of Vanilla MC). Actually, in your second explanation, all you're really changing in terms of the pro-pick is now it won't tell you 'Traces of...' Instead it will tell you descriptive clues. When really, who knows, behind the scenes the pro-pick COULD be doing the same thing, just actually telling what those descriptive words mean in terms of ore. So this just means replacing the text with a description based on the rock type... So if you're tracking a reading of green strands which keeps getting higher, you'll make your way to some ore of that type. Now you know, if you find traces of green strands, you're on your way to that ore. Did I dumb that down too much? Or is that the main gist of it?
  23. Dynamic Inventory Size [Better Wall of Text]

Something came up in another thread and made me think: what are we defining the hot bar as? Generally, I think of a hot bar as a spot to put abilities or items for quick usage. That's what we use it for now, but it also serves as inventory space. A traditional hot bar does not - think of RPG games. So maybe if we go off of that concept - that the hot bar is NOT inventory space, but a few (3-5) spots that can hold easy access items. If we use this idea, then expanding inventory doesn't have to get caught up in how many 'hot bar' slots there are because they aren't inventory space. Maybe think of it as equipping items for easy use.
  24. Rainfall and making trees grow

Aw, do you have any pictures of how you added water to make the tress grow? I would imagine dumping water next to sapling makes it pop up, or no? This is very interesting, pictures if you can!
  25. X-Ray Mod compatible with TFC?

Damn you people like to get angry! I personally don't think it would RUIN your gaming experience... Just because you know where something spawns does not mean you will just be able to magically locate it and mine right to it! What I would really love for this mod to encompass more of is general knowledge. If I can look up IRL that shale deposits are found in lakes, river deltas, offshore beaches, etc., I'd love to be able to find a location like that in-game and find shale! To my knowledge the game doesn't work quite like this, though I think there are some spots that it does (metals, etc.). Imagine a game without a wiki -- if you need to know something, look it up for realz! This way, if someone says, 'Hey, where do I find shale?' everyone can just point them to Google and let them find out themselves! There won't be anymore, 'Don't give out information!' because the information will all be based on the real world, and therefore easily accessible for everyone.
