      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Wait...Someone is attempting to update Cubic Chunks to 1.6.2? YEAHHH!!

Looks like it!  Barteks2x has been working on it, though I don't think he's released anything yet.  Which is just as well as it's apparently still very buggy: "I'm working on it. My results on Minecraft 1.5.2 (Buggy terrain generator, no lighting, no world saving/loading, liquids not working): [video showin' some stuff]." --(http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1882661-robintons-cubic-chunks-for-161/#entry23259579)

He has put up a couple videos though.  There's one in that link and I guess you've already seen the other ;P

  2. Someone over on MCForums suggested that Cubic Chunks be implemented into vanilla MC, and the suggestion has actually gained a lot of traction (they have up-side of 1700 supporters as of my posting this).  Even so, it's unclear if Mojang has even noticed the suggestion, much less considered it.

So show some support at http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1707097-cubic-chunks-reduced-lag-infinite-height-and-more-over-one-thousand-supporters-1700updated-811-now-with-video-of-pre-alpha-cubic-chunks/page__hl__%20cubic%20%20chunks !  Commence in the spreading of the wordage!

This could mean really big things for Minecraft if we can get the devs onboard :D

  3. What is TFC to me?  TFC is Too Freakin' Cool, YEAH!!!

User was banned for this post. Duration of ban: "Not long enough"

...On a more serious note, what I like about TFC is, I think really the same thing as everyone else.  It shifts the focus of gameplay from Creative Mode, WITH A TWIST!  to a unique and challenging survival mode with a great deal of depth and an awesome sense of accomplishment in even its most basic features.  It turns survival from a novelty to the main focus of gameplay, and I'm not sure exactly what, but something about that is significantly more rewarding than just mining and crafting.

And speaking of Cubic Chunks, someone recently made a rather comprehensive suggestion on MCForums to have Cubic Chunks implemented into vanilla Minecraft, and it's gained a TON of support: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1707097-cubic-chunks-reduced-lag-infinite-height-and-more-over-one-thousand-supporters-1700updated-811-now-with-video-of-pre-alpha-cubic-chunks/page__hl__%20cubic%20%20chunks

  4. @Dunk:

If I understand correctly, there are three major reasons that villagers in TFC are always a NO:

    • TFC is meant to be solely multiplayer - meaning that NPC's wouldn't be needed to populate the world, as there would be actual human players fulfilling that purpose better than AI ever could.
    • TFC is meant to be challenging, and the introduction of AI characters poses huge potential for exploitation by human players that would make the mod both less challenging and less believable.
    • TFC is a BIG mod, and is going to take a lot of time and work to complete. So dedicating a large part of its development to a feature that's not only unnecessary but possibly even game-breaking is pretty much just dumb.
So I know that there's good reason for keeping NPC's out of the game, but this still means that SSP will never have city building, economics, politics, or anything of the kind, and is pretty much done for.

That said, I'd like to ask you if an add-on like this one would be acceptable if it 1: was not compatible with SMP (meaning that it wouldn't even fall within the scope of TFC), and 2: added NPC's that were only meant to emulate human players for the sake of us who play SSP (and want villagers)?

    Thanks for your time ^_^

    @Winterbrass:

Might you consider making this as a mod for vanilla Minecraft?

  5. Wow! Awesome to see so many positive votes! I was afraid I'd be getting ಠ_ಠed into oblivion :P

Not gonna happen, any sort of serious combat overhaul has been squishidy squashed by Bioxx, sorry. :(

Dang, I was afraid of that. But it's still cool to see people supporting the idea.

EDIT: This (if fleshed out MUCH more) should really go into the suggestion forum, It may just be simple enough (mechanics wise, chivalry's combat system is amazingly simple but well done and dynamic.) to change Bioxx's mind. IF it is even possible, and not too difficult.

Well, the fleshing out would probably be best left to someone else - I tend to get carried away with stuff like this.

And even if it isn't added, there's still the possibility that somebody could make an add-on or something after the release of the full version :D

as you have effectively stomped it for me, I see no reason why you would 180 yourself by saying this needs to be suggested. It doesn't.

You really think Bioxx won't consider it? I mean, it's not as if TFC would have to completely emulate Chivalry: striking speed and timed blocking alone would be a HUGE improvement from vanilla :)

  6. I just ran a few searches through the forums and was surprised to find that nobody seems to have written a suggestion on increasing the render distance. So, *I* am writing a suggestion on increasing the render distance.

    It is as follows:

    Premise

A while back, I read a suggestion made by kazim57 titled "Huge Mountains (http://terrafirmacra...h__1#entry19553)." If you hadn't already guessed, the point of that suggestion was to increase world height and allow for actual *mountains* to form in TFC. While I'm all for this idea, there is one major problem: it isn't really possible to appreciate any of the taller structures in Minecraft, let alone full scale mountains, with the current render distance.

Take for instance this castle I built in Tekkit:

    Posted Image

Yes, I am taking advantage of this suggestion to show off my pretty castle, what of it?

As cool as I think this thing is, I can't help but feel that the world drop-off in the distance greatly detracts from its aesthetic value.

    This:

    Posted Image

...is something that I'd like to see in TFC. :P

    Suggestion

First, I have to say that I don't know much about coding or about how Minecraft works, so if I make a dumb mistake in my reasoning, it's because I'm dumb ^_^

Now as I understand it, render distance can't just be greatly increased because doing so would require that many more chunks be loaded simultaneously, and most computers simply can't keep up past a certain point (like several thousand blocks in each direction). So I was wondering if it might be possible to maintain user-defined world loading distance (i.e. Tiny, Small, Normal, and Far render distances), and then render chunks artificially from there on to a certain distance.

    For example:

Say that I start a new world and set the render distance to normal. This would mean that (according to the MC wiki) my computer is processing the world within a radius of 128 blocks around my character. Beyond that, any existing world would be *visually* loaded up to a certain distance, and all non-generated world would remain non-generated until I moved within 128 blocks of it. So, if I'm standing still and I can see a sapling 129 blocks away from me, that sapling will never grow into a tree because it isn't actually loaded, it's only being visually drawn.

    ...if that makes any sense.

    Pros:

    • Immensely improved in-game atmosphere
    • Taller mountains become somewhat more feasible
    Cons:
    • It may not be possible
    • Even if it is possible it may not be right for TFC
    • Even if it is right for TFC it may be very difficult to code
Well, I suppose that's it. I look forward to reading any and all responses; thank you for reading! :D

TL;DR: Does anyone have an idea of how rendering distance could be increased without significantly impacting performance?
