      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Book and Quill?

A somewhat related topic, I can't seem to make the bellows with the recipe in the link. Don't know if it's old or something but can't find it at all. I'm using b75. Has anyone else made it during this build?
  2. Does height affect heat of firepit/forge/bloomery?

on the other hand, the fall is farther when it inevitably does ;D No, I meant in the sense of higher heat level or similar. Has there been such a variable or is there still one or has there never been?
  3. blueprints are way too op

Actually, my (limited as it may be) experience with wilderness survival is that it requires quite a fair deal of "passing the time". At least wilderness survival with modern knowledge. Though that's just for a nordic climate - it may be different in other parts of the world, but unless it's winter, getting shelter is quite simple and doesn't really take that long (granted, we have big forests). Getting food is to a large degree determined by luck, but many methods (such as hunting, trapping and fishing) DOES require a lot of "passing the time". In addition, you need to take everything quite slow so you don't tire yourself, because needlessly tireing yourself is a bad thing with capital B. In my experience, boredom is a major psychological strain under such circumstances - but I've got a very high need of constant stimuli, so YMMV. A curse of the modern society. It would likely be different if you lived outside for a long time though, I've never done this sort of thing for more than a week (and then it was during late summer, the easiest time to do it). Though I'm in no way saying that it's easier than indoors comfortable living, that'd be quite insane. The life expectancy of a stone age human was low enough that I feel comfortable saying I'm goddamn lucky to be living today. I would say certain parts of psychological stress would be lower in a more "primitive" situations though. Today's society forces a kind of stress that we haven't had time to evolve resistance to - the constant, longterm stress and the insane focus on living up to different social standards. Humans, like most animals, are more evolved for short-term stress. On the other hand, the frequency of us becoming food nowadays are a fair deal lower, and in my part of the world, the frequency of us starving to death too.
  4. Book and Quill?

Could it be related to the vanilla change of the recipe to the book? I dunno. Other than that it should work.
  5. TerraFirmaCraft Ruined Minecraft for me.....

I'm not sure about that. TFC mostly requires patience and perseverance, not quick action pvp-skills. Also, TFC doesn't really train you in applying traps, since redstone doesn't come into play until very late and there's no pistons. I think someone playing vanilla hardcore would have the best chance, alternatively someone who is good at FPS games in general and still decent in minecraft, if they can get a bow.
  6. TerraFirmaCraft Ruined Minecraft for me.....

I usually find vanilla too simple nowadays, though I do enjoy hardcore mode a fair bit (until i die, lol). I kind of switch between TFC and some tech modpacks (technic, mindcrack, ftb, dw20 etc). I feel vanilla is probably perfectly designed as it is, easy to learn, quick to draw you in et cetera, and then you can "specialize" the gameplay experience by modpacks - for hardcore survivalism, TFC, and for massive automated stuff, techmods. EDIT: I don't feel the vanilla has gotten that much easier by learning TFC, though. Now, I haven't teched that far into TFC, but still... I feel they're too different for stuff learnt in TFC to be useful in vanilla, mostly.
  7. Ceramic working, The Second Technological Tier.

The issue with a resource being very scarce is when you're relying on that resource to get "further" into the game completely. Requiring a certain resource to "tech" in a certain way isn't much of an issue. It's when you need one single resource to "tech" in _everything_ the issue appears.
  8. blueprints are way too op

You don't create a block, you just alter it. Just like you do when creating a crafting table, or stone bricks, or what have you. But then it's not about how easy something is to do but what is believable and not and what is possible in the real world. And a lot of things differ from that. Other things that could be argued, if you want to go down that path, is that you should be able to carry like one log block at a time (it is a square meter of wood!) and nearly nothing else, that you shouldn't be able to store rocks, planks etc in chests, that you shouldn't be able to survive on just a few times of food, et cetera et cetera. Not to speak of digging times - taking out a cubic meter of dirt takes at least half an hour IRL, with a high-quality modern shovel. There's a lot of suspension of disbelief in games, and there's a lot of stuff that is impossible in real life that we have in the games because it makes it more fun, like being able to level a dirt hill with a shovel in like 2 minutes and carrying around 30 cubic meters of dirt in your invisible backpack. So saying: "If you believe chiselling blocks is tedious without being able to magically create them, then DON'T do it. You don't HAVE to. It is not essential to survival." Could as well be changed for: "If you believe digging earth is tedious without being able to do it in a few seconds, then DON'T do it. You don't HAVE to. It is not essential to survival." I'm not saying you're arguing for longer dirt digging methods, just that the very line of reasoning that something's ease of doing compared to real life is an argument for what to allow/what not to allow. Indirectly it can be, and I can see plenty of reasons for wanting to restrict/remove blueprints, but this is really flawed logic. People are saying it like it's some black and white thing where some things are completely logical to have in and others, to quote, "is a fish in the desert in survival mode". I'm saying it's all just different points on a scale to what amount of tedium/difficulty we want, and none is inherently more right than the other. It's these absolute statements, like the following, that I think are unnecessary and directly negative for a healthy debate: "Whether 1/1000th of a block or not, a creative tool, used to make crafting quicker because "people dont want to spend the time on tedium", is a fish in the desert in survival mode, regardless of whether it makes surviving easier or not."
  9. [b73] Repeated crashes

Yo. Since the last patch I reinstalled the whole game with a fresh new copy, and have had crashes at just wandering around two times now in about four hours gaming. 10. blueprints are way too op

That could be said for shovels and all food but zombie flesh too, that they belong in creative mode and we should dig with our hands because it's harder and eat the putrid flesh because it's more of a challenge and that food that doesn't poison you is just for lazy people and that we should only have one heart HP because surviving an arrow is for creative mode. It's always a weighting of difficulty vs. accessability. The feeling of satisfaction when succeeding at something difficult can be lessened if the task gets simplified, but if it's too difficult one might end up tireing and dropping the whole thing and never getting to the fun part. Like if we had to dig all dirt by hand. And different people prefer different amounts of tedium/difficulty. People playing TFC sure prefer more than those playing vanilla, but it varies among us too. Acting like one's personal preference is some kind of perfect level of difficulty can come across as a bit rude. While I'm bound to agree that blueprints should be hard to do or not be there at all (preferably instead having other methods of speeding up chiseling), it's better not to act like we're some kind of Messengers of The One Truth.
  11. Star navigations

I think making maps craftable again would be a good idea. Maybe without the pointer showing where you are on the map - that way you have to make or note landmarks.
  12. Ceramic working, The Second Technological Tier.

That sounds awesome. And I got an idea about finding clay: It has been mentioned that many people have a hard time finding clay, and making clay a necessary second tier, in larger amounts, could make the game very swingy (where you don't know if you'll reach zinc tier in an ingame week or five). My suggestion is to make right-clicking with a shovel work like the prospector's pick but attuned to clay only - so it shows "found traces of clay" et cetera, and start spawning clay in smaller amounts a little here and there; in real life, there's loads of different clays and not all are found at riverbeds, so it makes sense you could find some clay inland to, and using a shovel to check the earth for clay makes sense. What do you think?
  13. blueprints are way too op

I don't see how it's horribly balanced as a survival mode mechanic as it doesn't really enhance your survival rate that much. I can see from the believability viewpoint, but not really the game balance one. I mean, what are chiseled blocks good for that plank/stairs/fence block aren't? Sure, they're protected from flame, but that's about it. A minor benefit for a medium amount of work, is not some horrible thing to me. On the other hand, I think there is a believabiltiy issue in the only way to have a fist-sized stone being to take a square meter of marble and cut away 99.8%, and then only getting a single little rock. I think that there is an issue with believability and I don't think that forcing one to do that manually with the argument "it should be hard!" is a good idea - since it's a tedium that doesn't make sense from an in-game world. It's like making all food require melted tin as an ingredient - sure, it makes the game harder, but that doesn't mean it makes sense. One option would be to allow blueprints to be used several times, but using a blueprint isn't instant, it takes like .5-1 seconds per removed piece. Another option is to make chiseling drop microblocks that are 1/512th of a block that can be placed much like planks, perhaps with some additional cost of some sort of adhesive or similar. That'd make it easier to make those small details.
  14. blueprints are way too op

I'm in agreement with JAG on this. Copying with blueprints is a server rules thing, not a mod thing, just like pvp, stealing from chests, copying designs etc. While it's nice if TFC doesn't prevent plugins from doing this, or even has it as an option, I don't think it's different from stealing from chests and don't think it should be the standard.
  15. Ceramic working, The Second Technological Tier.

Agreed. I think Just_Another_Guy's solution is great - right-click a wooden block with a book & quill to turn it into a scribing bench, just like how the hammer is used to make stone anvils.
  16. Ceramic working, The Second Technological Tier.

I must say I'm against randomly hitting the metal to fulfil the rules. The rules aren't visible in the game unless you have a plan, and I'm not for referring to the wiki to be more or less a _must_ to progress throughout the game. I found that an issue with early minecraft, before achievements that hints to the right way and before simply learning everything and thus not suffering from the issue anymore. I'd much more prefer simply having a "ceramic saw" that works like a regular saw, just with worse durability. Much, much rather that than having to guess (or look up the wiki) at more or less random recipes that cost a lot of time at every try.

While not TFC specific, I must say I'm quite a good shot with the MC bow. I can usually hit moving targets at 50 meters with like 95% hit frequency, a bit lower if it's night or I'm tired. I can occacionally make 100 meter shots at first try. I'm no master, but i've won quite a few pvp fights through that. Ironic since I don't play other FPS games at all, but I guess the same is true for a large part of the minecraft community.
  18. Ores are too hard to find starting off.

I think sarcasm is good. I mean, terrafirmacraft is often frustrating - that's part of what makes it great. Just like Dwarven Fortress' slogan "Losing is fun!" I think sarcasm is the way to go with a game this hard. Not that terrafirmacraft is even close to DF in terms of difficulty (yet), though. I feel TFC starts out maybe a square or two higher than starcraft and then levels out later on as there's no "late-game" difficulties yet. Regardless, it's not a newb-friendly mod, and as such I feel it might be better to say "it's this bad, and that's the point!" than saying "it's not that bad!". Yeah, it's a great video. That should be on the front page IMO.
  19. Ores are too hard to find starting off.

Now, I'm also quite new to the forum, but I must say I kinda agree with barkingnoise and fatpoulet. I understand that one gets tired of explaining the same thing over and over to newbs (especially those who sound a fair bit arrogant, like the OP) who has misunderstood the goal of the mod and it's easy to snap, but I think there are better approaches. So here's an idea: Seeing as how popular youtube videos with tutorials, let's play's and similar are with the minecraft community, one thing that could be done is kind of a "trailer"/ad/minitutorial for TFC. Something short and easy to watch, no more than a minute, with quick pacing, that just focuses on some things that differs from regular minecraft and does so in a positive way. An actual mod Ad, showcasting the difficulty of starting out rather than the awesomeness of chiseled bricks creations. Preferably overly cheesy, overly cheesy seems nice and laid-back, ironically enough. Like, "You think you've mastered minecraft survival?" *flashes to someone with a diamond pickaxe* "Enter terrafirmacraft!" *flashes to someone punching a tree not doing a dent* "Knapp!" *flash to knapping screen* "Prospect!" *flash to someone prospecting, getting nothing* "Build a shelter!" *flash to someone digging out a shelter of earth with straight walls* "Die!" *flash to the shelter falling together burying the person* Then do a little flyover some basic huts with some floating text, like "be like forever in the stone age!", "relocate every time you need metal!", "wait a year for crops to grow!", "like dwarf fortress with only one dwarf!" etc etc etc I'm useless with video, so I can't really do such a thing, but if someone likes to do youtube videos I think having something like that would be great. Then, whenever someone starts a thread like this, just link them to the video. I think it could give the mod some attention, draw the right kind of players and be quite a fun watch, as long as it's pretty short.
  20. Getting Mo's Creatures to work with TFC, has anyone made it?

which was kind of pointless, especially at that stage where minecraft didn't really have that much to do in survival mode.

closing me! Does anyone have any idea what the issue is? Without TFC, Mo's run fine and without Mo's, TFC runs fine.
  22. Getting Mo's Creatures to work with TFC, has anyone made it?

Yeah, at least since somewhere in Alpha has chainmail been crafted by fire blocks; what Mo's does is allow you to actually get fire blocks which is impossible in vanilla.
  23. water level setting

Anything lower than 100 or so will result in a complete desert. Anything higher than 180 will result in only a few islands here and there. Most of the current ground seems to lie at between 140 and 155.
  24. What does a stone's type have to do with where it spawns?

Are you sure? I thought that technically the biomes where still used, just that they don't spawn at random and that many biomes only have slight differences between them. The F3 display shows biome names that seem to match the general environment, and when it changes from, for example, forest to plains the rock usually also change. Sometimes it changes within a forest, and I assumed this was due to having several biomes named "forest" clumped together.
  25. Localization

I have no idea about what undskyld mange gange means, except if it means innocent several times? Or something similar? Ledsen en hel del promenader means "sad a lot of walks" (as in, unhappy + a lot of + walk (the substantive, not the verb).
