      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. -snip-

Lovely comprehensive list there :) I think the only additional thing I can think of (and this is only if you are being pedantic and talking about the correct period) is that there might be workers who specialise in working any smelting facility (if there is one)

Ironically enough the disclaimer wasn't meant for you (as we have spoken before and I know you are very knowledgable on what you post) it was meant for other people who wouldn't like me saying that we haven't really moved forward as it bursts the commonly held ego-bubble that we as a race have about "being the best thing since sliced bread" and having passed our anients in all ways. Which is total fallacy and in my opinion we've gone backwards in many ways. But alas it wasn't meant for you my friend.

    I see :)

I agree with you about the sliced bread comment :P I really think we are too aloof about our past :S

  2. I am leaving you guys with this choice. Should we open the server and play as normal until the 1.3 update comes out (which will apparently change world gen a fair bit) or should we wait ?

Personally, I think this is a perfect opportunity to weed out the griefers and get a solid community down before we start playing the game proper.

    Thoughts ?

  3. No they can't

Even looking at another mod's sourcecode could be considered theft of intellectual property, and Alblaka is well known for being exceptionally uptight about this.

That is a somewhat dubious matter. For example, reading a book and using it as an inspiration is not intellectual property theft, but using actual excerpts from the book would be. Similarly (I think) it is not theft to look at a piece of code for inspiration on how to perform a function, but it is theft to use part of that code. (I might be wrong though :P)

  4. Personally I think 40-50k blocks is reasonable as it provides plenty of space to make the world feel big.

I agree, hence why I specified a 1/5 scale world (in the z axis only). I think it strikes the balance between scale and playability and, judging from the poll, most others seem to agree.

  5. If you want dragon mounts then playes would need to install the mod aswell as TFC to play, If you wanted to, you could look into getting permitions for an autoinstaller server modpack. Or an offical list of "Required Mods"

There already is a list of required mods :)

Right now, it is TFC and Smart Moving :)

Ps .. Less than a week :o I'd better get the server ordered soon :P

  6. In game name: Raptorstorm

Character Name: Marek topaz Petrus Vidlek

    Character Age: 42

    Character Sex: Male

Family: Father, Petrus Vidlek. Mother: Victoria Alderrook.(Deceased) Siblings: Karol Vidlek(Younger Brother), Nicholaus Vidlek(Younger Brother).

Backround: Marek was the oldest in a family of 3, his mother died from a unknown disease, and he and his brothers, went to work with their father at his local smithy, in the town of Lamac. Marek's brothers did not understand the trade but Marek went on to become a great Redsmith. During this time he ammased a great hoard of copper which is gave to his family before setting off on a ship to other lands. While on this boat he philosphised about eels...But that is not the point of the story.

    Please accept my character!

Philsophised about eels you say ?

You will forever be known as Marek the Eel Philosophizer. Accepted :)

  7. I've been reading De Re Metallica (an old medival mining guide [and still the leading authority on methods about mining and smelting.]) You don't need to worry about modern or medival on the topic of mining, as we haven't really progressed on it since we first started on this planet.

Disclaimer: Before you try to shoot down my statement without researching for yourself, the tools have improved but the methods have not. Yes, I do recommend "De Re Metallica" to be on your reading list somewhere. It was writen in 1555 by Georgius Agricola, published in 1556 post-mortem (when the pictures where finished) and translated in 1950 by Herbert Clark Hoover and his wife&assissant Lou Henry Hoover.

I wasn't going to try and shoot down your statement because I agree with it :)

The methods really have barely changed since the medieval era, I was referring to Infinius's use of the "Buildcraft" mod and his cart mod as they add in locomotives and other powered systems :)

I have been reading "De Re Metallica" piecemeal as a reference text for some of my suggestions (namely the "Period Appropriate Transport Infrastructure" post I made) :)

  8. I presume most have you have voted on the "distance to poles" poll by now. If not, shame on you !

Go and do it. Right now ! http://www.terrafirmacraft.com/a-not-so-random-poll/#comments

    I'm waiting .....

Right, so now that we have all definitely voted on the poll, lets discuss.

GCountach kindly worked out that the rate of travel on foot in MC is around 1.5km/day (wow.. Steve sure does walk slowly)

The average human walking speed is 5km/h. Walking for 12 hours a day a human will cover 60km

First, lets discuss scale. It would take the average human 167 (rounded) days to walk one quarter of the circumference of the earth (or the distance from the equator to one of the poles). It would take Steve 40x this long as Steve only covers 1.5km/day.

Thus, if we are aiming for 1:1 representation of Earth like distances in terms of travel time and not proportionality to Steve's height (which is that of a normal human) then we must scale the earth down by 40x. This leaves us with a distance of 250000m (again, rounded) from equator to poles. This is equal to 167 days of MC travel (as expected).

With 50,000 blocks from equator to pole, we would have a planet roughly 1/5 earths circumference. This means it would take 33.4 days (rounded) to go from the equator to the pole.

I feel this is just right. Others may have a different opinion. Discuss :)

  9. well heres a joke

a man walks into a bar and says ouch

Sarah Jessica Parker walks into a bar,

Barman says, "sorry, I don't allow animals in this bar"

Horse walks into the bar a few seconds later,

Barman says, "Hello Mrs Parker, what can I get you ?"

  10. if you want to do that, salt the earth like the romans did

    Ooooh :P

I'd quite like the ability to "salt" the earth to be added :D

It'd give so much more meaning to conquering another factions city and destroying it :P

  11. Looking good, man, it looks like you followed all the rules, but a little puntuation would be nice in the backstory. It's hard to read, honestly.

Agreed. The backstory is solid, but the lack of punctuation really gets in the way of the reading of it.

Is there any chance you (Lucardeus) could fix some of the punctuation ? If so, I am happy to accept :)

R.E. The TNT cannons, I have no problem as long as other players are ok with them.

  12. I see a major lack of female charicters here. Even if your a guy, you should try for a new character type. In the spirit of that, I ask if I may make a second character.

also, anyone notice my OCD post that expanded the Template? lol. I would very much like to have working system of genealogy. Without Names of family, Living AND dead, it makes it hard. Its ok to say your character didn't know them, but if they did, please, for the love of keeping my sanity(albeit little) in check!

sorry if that came out rude.

I'll go fix mine :) Feel free to make a second character :)

I would join, but I don't have too much experience with role playing and my writing isn't too great.

Sort of on ECC's topic about lack of females: Can you choose to be any gender, or does it have to be specific to your own gender?

Any gender you want .. You can pick from all two of them ;):)

Don't worry too much about being inexperienced .. Everyone has to start somewhere :P

  13. the crystals could give off soft light and could come in many colours

i actually brought this idea up a while back when i had the idea of underground lakes and rivers

also what of we had gigantic metallic crystals, as in the crystal forms of silver, gold, sphalerite, bornite ....

That sounds awesome ... Game breaking .. But awesome :D

  14. Lol, Jed, as much as I think it's a dick move to have something like that, it DOES get people to read the rules, so I guess I shouldn't complain :P

And seriously, if you guys need help building the spawn wreck, I'll be happy to lend a hand.

I know it is a dick move :P Unfortunately, sometimes you have to be a dick to get people to pay attention to things :P

I'll be giving you, ECC, Danny and myself a days worth of early access to get everything up to scratch :P

  15. I don't think horse carts were much faster, people just didn't like walking... Especially for long distances.

It has a lot to do with the load bearing capacity of a person vs. a horse at the same speeds of travel :P
