      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

New Alloy: Electrum

62 posts in this topic

I have been thinking about the alloys in the mod and saw one in particular was missing. This was Electrum. Electrum is a alloy of Goldand Silver. It would be made by putting 2 unshaped gold and two unshaped silver in a metallurgy table. Now because this is an alloy of relativly weak metals i guess it would be used for asthetics like gold, silver, and rose gold equipment.

It was originally used for coins, so Electrum bars could be used as currency if a server wants to be historically accurate. Other than that, i don't feel like adding in yet another useless alloy -brass, i trusted you... I TRUSTED YOU ;_;-

electrum is also found in nature as the alloy of gold and silver (no copper)

electrum is very strong and ductile while also being a great conductor of electricity.

i all ready came up with the idea of electrum on the new ores thread

go have a look

:)

electrums a ultra rare natural metal alloy of gold and silver found in nature

though it is easily made with a blow torch and the two metals in a pot :)

sorry though i have heard amber being called electrum before aswell

With out a purpose a new alloy has no point. You can not make things out of gold or silver (except for alloys) so there is nothing that lends itself to creating a gold/silver alloy. It would still be too soft for any tools and metal currently has no other use.

yeah but zinc doesnt seem like a tool worthy material either to me

also, maybe if when we get later in the game and possibly have electricity, it could be used as a conductor?

Electricity wasn't harnessed by humans for gain or study of any sort until around 1600. Not gonna happen

But redstone, apparently, will stay. Maybe they could give electrum uses related to redstone stuff...?

No proof it was ever actually used for anything other than a curiosity/divine experience, unfortunately

Was that not used as a religulous item? Unless they add religion can't see why we will need that. :P It is not like they used it for anything meaningful. *ya I went there* B)

In a large enough server with multiple villages, different coins could allow for different 'dollar values' per currency, in a neat little economy kind of way. It (precious metal alloys) might also make a nice addition to a gem setting, jewellery related enchantment system.

Person 1 "Yay I made electrum."

Person 2 "Cool, what's it used for?"

Person 1 "Nothing whatsoever, but who cares; I made it!"

ELECTRUM LIGHTNING RODS FTW!!!!

if its a highly conductive metal it could be used for lightning rods to keep lightning (in a local chunk) from striking anything else and only strike it so that way your chicken pen wont catch on fire and your home wont burn down and your hickory grove wont go up in flames :3

Would be interesting, more so the attraction of the lighting then the protection from it, but probably not going to happen if Benji was the 1st one to knowingly utilize it in the 1700s.

BTW is lighting really that much of a danger for you? I've rarely even seen it hit anything remotely close to my person or property.

That's true. Also, lightings -at least in my case- never fall if there's no rain, so a fire in your tree farm/house is really a problem? I have rarely seen one in the years i have playing minecraft...

When electrum was used for currency it was made in two seperate ways, "Low Grade" and "High Grade". The grades tell how much gold was used in it.(The more gold the higher the grade). Maybe the different grades could count as different amoounts of money.

:)

Electrum has a trace amount of copper in it. (0.6%), but it still shouldnt be part of the recipe. Will edit.

Unless the electrum currency can be melted back down and separated, it's a worthless currency. The only time currency is useful is if it's backed by something, whether commodities or gold or moderator store credit (trading in coinage to moderators for any other commodity)

- Trading the currency instead of the actual commodity seems redundant.

- Trading the currency instead of the actual gold seems redundant.

- Moderator store credit devalues the different commodities, as there becomes an instant and bottomless source of any resource. Being one of the only people to have discovered a specific commodity on your server, like gold, silver, iron, etc, means nothing, and if you can trade raw commodities to the moderator for coinage or other commodities, you basically have a lowbrow TFC equivalent exchange.

Maybe build a form of mint(designated structure like forge or bloomery) to make and smelt back down coins.

2 options here...

1) You're 100% right and currency not backed by intrinsic value is worthless, meaning that obviously no one would ever use paper money and fiat currency isn't even a thing that exists.

2) You're talking out of your ass

this is a toughie
