      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Charcoal Pit Functionality

9 posts in this topic

Hey guys, I'm brand new to this forum so bear with me. When I try to make a charcoal pit, two things happen, no smoke is emitted from the cover, and it seems to burn forever... any suggestions?

If you have it properly set up and covered, smoke should come from the block above the firepit.... at least that's the only one that smokes on my pit. It should take a while to burn. They used to burn 18 in game hours but I had one recently that only went 13... could have been a bug, I dunno.

The whole thing needs to be covered by a non flammable type of block. The firepit must be on the lowest level of the pit and have at least one log pile directly above it. You do not need to put logs in the firepit. Keep an eye on it. When it is done the charcoal will spit out into the world and you will only have 5 minutes to pick it up before it disappears.

I sincerely appreciate the quick response, but I already knew all this, I built my pit exactly the same as on the wiki, knowing that instead of finding charcoal in the firepit, I would find it just laying on the ground. So, first of all, when I start the fire and finish the covering with dirt, no smoke comes out of the cover at all. Secondly, I can sit there and hear burning sounds literally for days. So after about three in game days I got impatient, uncovered the dirt, still found logs... I'm really at a loss.

Okay, I tried it on SP on creative, and it worked. I guess I justcan't get charcoal on my server :/ Really a downer...

I actually had an issue recently in my SP game where the fire pit burned for 2 straight days. So I took it down and re-built it (carefully because it was still on fire the whole time). I built it from scratch again and it worked perfectly the second time around - even built a second pit in a different configuration and it worked. It could just be an oddity.

I find when this happens to me, I forget to to put the log pile right above the fire. Might want to check that. If there's an airblock there instead, it doesn't matter the size of the charcoal pit, it won't work.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll try tearing it down and starting over.

Damn, well I built another one, still no smoke. And it still seems to burn for ever, is there any other way to power a forge efficiently?

You can use regular coal for the forge, but need charcoal for the bloomery.
