      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Do tundra biomes exist?

16 posts in this topic

I have come across taiga biomes, but never any tundra. Do any exist? With 300+ biomes I'd imagine they would, but I'm not sure.

Don't think so, hang on.

EDIT: Nope, checked the code. There's no biome called tundra any more. Just "snow" and "taiga"

^^watch Bioxx come in and say snow = tundra, but i don't think it does.

Tundra is characterized by permafrost, isn't it? In that case, you need the heaving of the terrain, something like what Bethesda did with Whiterun Hold in Skyrim. Few, if any trees, and very low scrub.

that's what tundra is, yes. Is there a point to it though?

I can't think of a particular resource it offers which might be helpful to TFC. It would just look like taiga with less snow and little 'plateaus' everywhere. Unless anyone else can think of a use or unique property of this biome, I think it might not be worth the effort.

(My understanding may be wrong)

Is tundra not just the equivalent of a snowy desert ? (aka empty and shit ?)

It would serve as much purpose as the desert biome :P

well, not exactly. tundra often has shrubby grass in it with grazing herds like caribou or musk oxen, but less precisely, it is a bit of a desert., but without the sand and cacti.

Thanks for the correction, I wasn't sure and I'm feeling too lazy today to lift a finger and use google :P

Have tundra would offer a unique survival challenge, same as the desert. It would also be nice if Tfc had driftwood, so you could still make fires and what-not in the tundra, just like how the Greenlandic did.

What is the unique survival challenge?

Or crops. Or heat. You'd need to live like an eskimo (is that term ok or not ? I don't deal with many people who would care either way :P)

In Canada and Greenland its derogatory. The correct term is Inuit. But I've never met one either so meh.

Actually, tundra climates offer an awesome variety of wildlife. I spend a lot of time in the North Slope of Alaska. Summer climates are quite pleasant, with temps reaching 70 degrees (F) and an abundance of birds, large game animals, and insects. Also, due to the permafrost, there are a lot of shallow lakes and streams, which hold several species of fish. Shitty thing is, the summer is very short. 3 months, plus or minus a few weeks, then, it's a proper nightmare for the rest of the year. Last winter, temps dropped below -50 degrees (F).

It literally translates into "stupid people who eat raw meat". So yes, it's not politically correct. Inuit is what they call them selves and is the preferred term.

It literally translates to one who eats raw flesh, or at least "flesh" but the raw part is implied.
