      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.

What are all those rock types?(not really a guide or discussion, but it is informative)

I think some of you are wondering what are all those rocks? I'll make a introduction to geology

Stones are divided in 3 main categories:

Sedimentary wich are made by sediment compressed and put together, like when a river carries little rocks from high places they are rounded by abrasion with other rocks and after a long time and a lot of rounded rocks they form Conglomerate.

Metamorphic rocks that are submited to high pressure and temperature and modify their matrix chemical and physical properties, for example take sandstone, that is a sedimentary rock made by compressed sand, if by a tectonic movement there is a string of magma coming in the arenite it heats up and with the pressure given by the tectonic it can suffer metamorphism to quartzite,

and igneous, made by high temperature minerals (magma) that get cooled off, they are subdivided in extrusive (magma pouring out) like basalt and intrusive (when it doesn't come out) like Diorite.

The rocks are given their name based on their minerals, like Sandstone is made out of mainly SiO2. For those we encounter in-game:

Andesite: Igneous extrusive rock, it is the equivalent of Diorite but extrusive. It is used in construction as aggregate

Basalt: Igneous extrusive rock, it is made by basaltic lava, mostly from the mantle, rapidly cooling off. It is used in construction as cobblestone, flooring, insulant and for statues

Chalk: sedimentary rock, it is a form of limestone composed by calcite. It has many uses as the mineral calcite can be used for raising pH of the soil, as chalk for the blackboard, in gymnastics for to remove perspiration and reduce slppin.

Chert: Sedimentary rock, it is confused with flint as flint is a variety of chert. The occuring environment of chert can be ocean bottom, where siliceous tiny organisms focus, or in areas where fluids rich in silica replace the sediments. You can also find chert nodules in limestone. It was used to make stone tools in prehistoric era.

Claystone: Sedimentary rock. Guess what formed it? Yea Clay. They are very smooth and smell like fresh clay. Its formation involves the recrystallization of the original material. When these argillaceous rocks present scales so as to exfoliate in parallel thin blades are called shales.

Conglomerate: Sedimentary rock. Consists of little to big rounded or angular rocks inside of a matrix. It is formed in almost any kind of sedimentary basin it is really common.

Dacite: Igneous intrusive rock. Mount St Helens main formation. can be used in construction as an aggregate.

Diorite: Igneous intrusive rock. It is relatively rare and extremely hard rock, it is so hard that ancient civilizations used it to work on granite.

Dolomite: Sedimentary rock. It is made of the mineral CaMg(CO3)2 utilized as a source of Magnesium for the manufacture of refractory materials. Dolomite appears to form in many different types of environment and can have varying structural, textural and chemical characteristics. Some researchers have stated "there are dolomites and dolomites", meaning that there may not be one single mechanism by which dolomite can form.

Gabbro: Igneous intrusive rock. It is the equivalent intrusive of basalt.

Gneiss: Metamorphic rock. The result of the metamorphism of granite, one of the biggest example of gneiss is Pão de açúcar, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. It is use for construction as aggregate.

Granite: Igneous Intrusive rock. It is used mostly in sculptures and as decoration. One cool thing about it is how it is mined, not with the conventional pickaxe or explosives (although explosives are used), they cut the formation in slabs either with

or controlled explosives.

Limestone: Sedimentary rock. It comes from calcite(CaCO3) deposites, usually in ocean beds, reefs form calcite as the organisms that form them die. It is used in construction including the great pyramids.

Marble: Metamorphic rock. Composed by the metamorphism of carbonate cristals like calcite or dolomite. Taj Mahal is a good example of its use in construction.

Mudstone: Sedimentary rock. Like sandstone and claystone guess what it is made of? Mud... Also when it is foliated it is called shale. It is harder than claystone.

Phyllite: Metamorphic rock. Is the metamorphism of shale like slate and schist but is the middle term between both.

Quartzite: Metamorphic rock. Is the metamorphism of sandstone, quartz is a mineral made of SiO2, in the Mohs scale it is at number 7 being diamond a 10. So when it gets recrystalized by the metamorphism it gets even harder, because of that it is used as railway ballast.

Rhyolite: Igneous extrusive rock. Rhyolites that cool too quickly may form volcanic glass(obsidian).

Rock Salt: Sedimentary rock. Rock salt is a generic name give to some different types of rock but mainly halite, since there are different kind of salts but the most known is NaCl and that is the one that forms halite. Halite is formed by the deposition of salt as a lake dries or as the lake heats up by season changes. One interesting fact is that because salt is very maleable halite may be squeezed by tectonic movement and form diapirs wich is a salt dome. It is used to make brine and for your surprise... it can be used to obtain salt.

Schist: Metamorphic rock. A highly foliar rock, it is made of scales of mica and other laminar minerals, you can litteraly peel it off. Most of them are derived from mud and claystone.

Shale: Sedimentary rock. A mixture of mud and clay and is characterized by breaks along thin laminae or parallel layering or bedding. It has a high concentration of organic matter, a great percentage of oil formations came from those rocks.

Siltstone: Sedimentary rock. Like mudstone but the minerals are coarser. May look like shale but it doesn't have the fissility, they are tied to low energy deposition sistems like ocean beds.

Slate: Metamorphic rock. It is originated by the metamorphism of shale, as shale has a lot of organic matter when it is compressed at high temperatures it may form coal bodies so slate is associated with coal mines. It is used in construcion mainly on roof tops

To be truthful I've never heard of obsdian as a rock out of minecraft, but as wikipedia says it is a kind of volcanic glass. And for the pictures they show there we call it here just volcanic glass, it behaves as glass, it isn't that hard to break it like minecraft makes it look like. It was used like flint.

Interesting, opaque glass...Ok, mojang exaggerated making it so hard to break.
