      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Anyone know how to make chainmail?

15 posts in this topic

I do. Its really cool. It makes me feel like a medieval craftsman when you do it. Granted, I'm not the best at it, but I'm pretty good...

Currently I am working on a small patch of European 4:1. I'll post a pic when I'm done.

EDIT: Here are some pics of some patches I did.

I use to make this with some high grade wire. What kind of metal are you using?

Let me suggest a process for this.

First thing: We are gonna do that the good way, we are using rivetted chainmail....everything else would be below our standards.

So lets starts with the process. First we need to get about 6 ingots (a chainmail chest weights about 12kg) of iron/steel into wire. Then we are gonna cut everything into small little pieces and flatten out the ends of each piece make a hole in it. Oh and we need 1 rivet for each piece we made. After we've done that we bend every little ring after the other and hammer in a little rivet into each piece to close them off. Well And after this took us about like a month we have a chainmail.... Ehm... i'll stick with the plates... ;)

Using an ax and hammer, you could cut heated sheet metal into long strands of metal, and those strands down into lengths suitable to bend into rings for chainmail. This would obviously take a lot of axe durability, and would be tedious as sin since you'd have to bend each ring to add to the armor piece. But it could be a simple and straightforward means of armoring. Benefits would be that there's nothing really to fail by crafting it so you know you'll get armor at 100% durability for the same amount of material, but the downside is it would probably take long to put together and would provide slightly less armor value.

I used 16g agw aluminum wire. Then I polished it up to make it shiny. While I am using aluminum in this, I have some other metals. I can post pics if you want.:D

Ahh it is aluminum eh, I suspected but wasn't sure. Much lighter than anything I was doing, but just don't go riding into battle with it! :) Sure more pics always cool

Oh yeah LOL and I'll post more pics.

@Gorni I was thinking that.

EDIT:

Here are more pics. They are just rings, not actual stitched patches.

DOUBLE EDIT: Puxa, What stitch did you use for your chainmail?

Also, did you use steel, galvanized steel, what?

The brass would look really good in pattern with a carbon steel base.

I don't know what the stitch would have been called. I just fiddled around with a few links until I found one that worked well. I made most of a vest but it got squished in a move.

Carbon steel you ,ean like blacker steel, or the one I posted a picture of? It would probably look good with both because of the contrastt.

Yeah I meant blackened. I think that's often a coating though... But yeah, both would look good.
