      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Easy Method to Gather Raw Stone Quickly

18 posts in this topic

Here is a method i use to gather alot of raw stone very quickly. It's fast, it's simple, and you don't have to make a mess or worry about cave-ins. It's great for people who like to build with raw stone or if you need plunty of it to fill in your mistakes.

Nice technique, much better than trying to do this underground. Welcome to the forums!

The best technique is where you mine the minimal amount of stone, perfect is when almost every stone will yield a raw stone.

So the more ground you cover the better the technique, for example:

o - you mine

x - you leave

First layer:(make it a chess board)

Second layer:

repeat this patern-

xox

ooo

xox

So it looks like-

xoxoxoxoxox

oooxoooxooo

xoxoxoxoxox

oxoooxoooxo

xoxoxoxoxox

oooxoooxooo

xoxoxoxoxox

oxoooxoooxo

Third layer looks like the second but moved to the side by one cell:

oxoxoxoxoxo

ooxoooxooox

oxoxoxoxoxo

xoooxoooxoo

oxoxoxoxoxo

ooxoooxooox

oxoxoxoxoxo

the fourth layer is just like the third but moved to the same side by another cell.

Result: (lets say your mining area is in size A)

first leyer - mined A/2

second leyer - mined 2*A/3, yield A/2 raw stones

third and so on - mined 2*A/3, yield A/3 raw stones

on a perfect infinite plane you get a raw stone for every 2 stones you mine.

Problems:

since your plane wont be infinite you will always get shorter on the sides so the bigger the ground you start with the more you get.

Also it's impossible to get 1:1 mined raw ratio because some sides always get blocked, but this method is close enough.

But before you start mining:

Once I mined lots of raw stone, then I asked why do I need it?

Instead of using a pick, I would use a chisel to make slabs. Slabs count as "air" as far as the stone block is concerned and thus, will pop off as a stone block.

I discovered this by accident when creating an inset feature on a wall.

What are you doing with chisel and without a pick?

Can you further explain this.

Chisel is faster than a pick, but more expensive because you need a hammer and the chisel has less uses than the pick I think.

well, it's technically just one rck expensiver, as a stone hammer will do, and it won't consume the durability of either one of them :

If you mean using slab to fade away a block, with red pick it's much faster to just mine.

If it's mining.. chisel can't mine at all I think.

To get raw stone it's faster, but not to mine. I tried digging dirt with the chisel and I advice you to not try it.

I still don't get how are you suppose to get raw stone with chisel?

You chisel the surrounding blocks, sir. Then the stone falls itself.

So in the first layer you are going to chisel blocks instead of mining, ok..

what about the second layer? you still need to remove what's left of the chiseled block to keep going..

this is a "good" technique when chiseling only a few blocks, useless for big plans.

well if you chisel ten times.the block is gone!! and thereby "mined" you dont get rocks though...

You have infinite durability so it is really the way to go for lots of raw stone...

it's some sort of an exploit but most people don't care!

Just mining the stone would be much faster the 10 time chiseling.

Really depends on what you're using, using a chisel is much faster than the low end picks, and you only have to chisel a face once once you can see it.
