      Server Move   09/13/2018

I (Dries007) have recently taken over as main developer and server admin. This involved moving servers to reduce cost. It's likely there will be some more downtime in the future but most  things should be sorted by now. This forum is in dire need of replacement as the software is quite old and can't be easily updated. If you wish to discuss or stay updated, join our discord: https://invite.gg/terrafirmacraft. The forum will remain available to read, but will be locked in the future, when a new system is setup. The forum and wiki are now ad free. If you'd like to contribute to keeping it that way, you can do so via paypal or patreon.

      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

TFCF (Recipe Tracker)

65 posts in this topic

This seems like it would be the decision of the server owner to include this functionality. If he wanted to have specific people be chefs, I'm sure they wouldn't offer this. If it's a random person who is adding all the information and they aren't the chef and you don't like them doing it, ban them. Though you won't stop others on the server from making food and maybe even offering their findings to others.

We've been trying to develop different ways of doing this without adding skills to the game because we want it to be more organic than that, but you guys are fighting us every step of the way.

I love this. And I really don't feel people are fighting this specific aspect; there is no way to fight it considering meals are based on world seed. Every world is inevitably going to have different recipes. Whether the server owner decided to share them via in-game signs or in this browser application is up to them. If you're on a server who uses this, leave. It in no way devalues the game, rather devalues the world you are playing in IF someone is using this AND you would rather find out on your own AND someone is shoving the information in your face. Other than that, it's a helpful tool for people who want it. If that's the stance then realistically creative mode should be removed so that people can't experiment without consequences (I'm assuming you can play TFC in creative mode, I have not tried, just SMP).

Let me make the case for this utility. My goal was to keep track of the recipes that I have already tried, so that when I experiment for new meals I don't repeat the same recipes by accident. Making a list in a notepad (or in-game book) or a spreadsheet of the recipes I've already tried would be incredibly tedious. How many recipe combinations are there? How do you guys keep track of the recipes that you've already tried, or prevent yourself from repeating the same recipes during experimentation by accident?

I think most players will be satisfied when they find a decent recipe for their desired effect, and not necessarily the best recipe for that effect, and because there is no way to keep track of the recipes they've already tried they'll stop seeking improved versions of those recipes. For me this utility allows me to experiment even more than I would have without it.

Maybe I made a mistake by sharing this with other server members and it should be emphasized for individual use, and in that case the utility would still have value for me.

aeroc, basically summarizing your post, it SHOULD be for singular use, for every person to do themselves, finding out themselves what works and what doesnt, thats what makes you a master in cooking, and gives you a tool to trade: you know how to make the best meals or the most replenishable ones, like the Joker said: if you're good at something, never do it for free, guess what you just did

Again, you won't be able to tell people how to use software or how to play games. I understand how people can be on both sides of this, though. I just wish everyone could see that too. If you want your own stash of recipes, fine. Be the server chef! But on my server, I don't want to be THE CHEF. I've made a few recipes and found some nice meals, and I've put them on signs next to the kitchen for others to use. I don't want to have to run home and make meals for people or to try to remember which ones did what so I can tell someone in chat, I just want to mine dammit! Just because I like doing a little of everything doesn't mean something like this breaks the game for me or the people I play with.

well of course it remains your own choice if you listen to what i say or not, but in my opinion, one should keep what he can do to himself, or educte a very light group of people, in order to create factions, which would lead to spying on one another for trade secrets, war, and we all end up dead (again) :D

TFC, making me believe I'm socialist when I'm a bloody capitalist, but not that much.

sharing recipes in your world with others will get no respect from us, that's all I'll say.

I just don't understand it. That's ridiculous. You're saying that when I play the game, I SHOULD not tell ANYONE what recipes I have used, even when the other players and I share a house/community? And if I do, even if through in-game devices (signs), even though I support the mod by using it exclusively with no other mods/addons/plug-ins/(this proposed web interface), you no longer have respect for me??

I really like this game, as I have stated before, but this just seems? weird? You're almost pushing me away from it... These forums should be for rational conversations, not for crucifying people based on their opinions.

dock, i think dunk is trying to say that giving away the secrets you spent hours on working for, and they spent months coding, would earn their personal disrespect as a human, not as a developer, because anyone new will basically get everything handed to him, not having to find out anything by himself (imagine a minecraft server that standardly gives you full diamond to begin with, (which a shitton do in fact), you dont get the fun of any part of mining anymore, its just gathering blocks to build, done.

at least thats my opinion

No one is giving away the secrets to their code. I agree, you shouldn't walk right in to a server equipped with the knowledge of all the recipes. The only way this is possible is if someone spent the time to figure them out, then DECIDED to hand them out to everyone. SOMEONE still has to do the work. If you're selfless enough to work for free, so be it. If you don't want spoilers, don't play on a server that offers it. I'm just saying if you are so against people using something like this then you might as well take out signs, item frames, all which can be used to depict recipes. Oh, and take out chat too. We're talking about something that takes human brainpower and time to figure out, not some number crunching program which spews out all the data.

you do realize that 90% of the gaming community hates spoilers the most? and in TFC, telling someone the recipe to something they shouldv figured out themselves (which WILL happen even if you dont ask it, because we do actually have trolls and griefers) they will loze the sense of uniqueness that comes with figuring it out yourself, most people cant play a game twice with the exact same feel, so to shortly summarize my defense of my point of view: Posted Image

(now if no one gets that one, i will manually take over your pc's until you've watched EVERY episode containing this woman)

So the moral is to stop thinking up ways to make the game more convenient for yourself and they friends you play with, because one way or another, it will be used against you. TFC (both in game and out) is based on isolation of numbers and knowledge. Keep your information to yourself.

Ok... what's the point of arguing this again? i mean, it's already pretty clear that, no matter what anyone (including the devs) says, this tool or it's in game variants are going to be used/already in use. Hate on the ones that use it if you want to, they won't stop using it. Ban them from the forums, they won't stop using it. And you won't be able to do anything else other than that without getting into illegal stuff, JUST for something some people use.

So, i ask again, what's the point? it's not like this will aid, stop or change anything, no matter what you guys say. Everyone plays the game as they want to, even if it's not how the developers intended it to be played.

no, my moral is: its okay to help your friends, but make sure other people that DONT want your information dont get spoiled, if you want to know the ending to harry potter, ( NO DERAIL) and you ask your friend, dont make him give the answer in the book store ;) your moral, share with everyone, my moral, select whom to give your information to based on what they want.

Sorry if you misunderstood me, but we're on the same page here. I don't play on an open server; I play with my friends. Therefore we all use the same database of knowledge. I just found it weird to know that I would have no respect for sharing recipes with my friends on my server who obviously want it (if they didn't of course I wouldn't shove it down their throat!) I took this recipe tracker as a great addition to my server; instead of filling a room with signs of the recipes I've used, we could all use this combine efforts much easier. But like I said, if the devs disdains this, then I guess I'll stop using signs too and start just jotting them down IRL.

meh, like you said, if the devs disdain this, why would you give a single flying fuck that dunk doesnt like you writing stuff down as long as you arent harming anyone with it? its kind of like saying you like cake, but i hate cake so you dont eat cake.....you must be angry because you're the only one eating cake right now, why dont you share that?

(inverted reference at the .... part, anyone get it?)

Seems weird to me to say in the same breath that this game is made for communities, but that you shouldn't share your knowledge. I'm pretty sure that's what communities do.

people dont think or read beyond the first few words i get the feeling

you shouldnt share your knowledge with those that have no wish for it, nor would they want it. you should always share your knowledge with those open to it or directly asking for it. IS THIS OBVIOUS ENOUGH?

That's what you're saying which is fine. I still don't get the opposition to the tool elsewhere in the thread. Nobody is forcing anyone to go and lookup the recipes they don't want to know. This is the kind of thing where a town would have its own website to share recipes if they want. Saying that chefs should hoard their knowledge or that sharing any recipe at all is wrong is what I don't get.

the problem is, which dunk stated somewhere when i first joined: information cannot be unseen, if some happy forum guy goes around and clicks on this link and reads it like any topic, boom, recipes have now become a LOT less interesting for him/him (all girls are guys and kids are FBI agents, right?) this type of post in general shouldnt have been made on the forums, or at least with a massive spoiler disclaimer on it, since its kind of like what happens with anime: you check out any music vid from an anime you like, SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!

I'd be unhappy with the fact that I had the SAME EXACT seed as the OP as well... but chances are, they won't.

you forget that this chart shows a very large portion of possible recipes, which means all you will do from now on is throw these foodstuffs together to see what works, not experiment with stuff to see if it is even edible in the first place

I agree, yes they will see the effects that can be obtained. But come on, that second part is silly, the wiki tells you what is edible. If you hold the item and it has a Filling rating, it can be used.

So, starting the experimentation on something that works in another seed shouldn't be allowed? ._. Are you serious?

Information can't be unseen, that's true. On the other hand, clearly unuseful (for the reader at least) information can't do any damage, 'cause as the name says, it's clearly unuseful. I mean, how far you want to take it? I won't be able to describe how i have built my house aesthetically speaking, 'cause someone else will see that and use that idea? Readers do think for themselves. If they know something won't work in their case, or in my example, if they don't like what i did, they won't just take it 'cause the internet says so.

If we wanted you guys to have an in-game system for this, we would have given you one. We released the game we wanted you to play, and with this program, that's not what you're doing :/

We have no right to stop you, but it makes me kinda sad that you wouldn't want to play TFC the way we wrote it :(

The problem with this logic is that using it, Notch would be sad that you're writing this mod, instead of playing Minecraft the way he wrote it.... :)

I can get that you'd be highly unimpressed if I reverse-engineered the code and wrote a tool that took a world seed and spit out all possible recipes, but this is just a fancy (and public-ish) notepad, really.
