      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Add "mode" toggle to log placement

13 posts in this topic

Seems like lots of people have problems figuring out log piles. Even people that know what they're doing often accidentally place a log instead of a pile sometimes. (or more than sometimes... )

I would suggest adding a mode toggle like the hoe and chisel have to logs (pile mode and construction mode). Not only would this provide some additional feed back via the mode icon as to what's going on, it would also require fewer keyboard gymnastics. Sneak could instead momentarily switch modes.

I don't think a mode toggle will make it any less confusing. Unless logpiles are on by default.

This seems better to me than pressing shift, which makes building with logs more difficult, but I'd actually prefer log piles only be used for firewood, which would be split or quartered logs. And, idk, do something else with logs for storage, I guess that wasn't fully thought out but I still like that part of the idea. x]

I suppose it would be easier. It would at least allow us to use shift not to fall off of the edge of our roof and place a log for construction.

And since the modes are already implemented for some tools, it shouldn't be that hard to make the same for logs.

Maybe logs placed by the palyer could be easier to destroy then the naturally grown trees as well? Putting a log on the ground by accident can be frustrating. x)

Surprised no one noticed, but this idea has been suggested in 2 other topics. Use the search function next time please. No offense meant, just a friendly tip as some people on here tend to go a bit wild when you don't search. That and double posting. :)

... I honestly wonder why nobody seems to be bothered that you can fit 16 logs in the same space taht takes to place one ._.

Maybe the Saw should give you Log (blocks) instead of logs. These can't be used for anything other than placing them. Logs obtained with an axe won't be able to be placed as log blocks, but will serve for all the normal purposes other than that. This takes some power away from the saw (which basically completely owns the axe of the same metal right now), and at the same time avoids this kind of problem, as log blocks will place... log blocks ._. and log items will place log piles. Not the same item any more, no need to add a shift click function.

Good point LOL.

They can't be used for ANYTHING? I think the only way you can get Log(block) is by using a saw. But I don't agree that they cant be used for anything else. They should still be able to be used for making planks and things. If not, it is too much of a debuff IMO.

I like the idea overall, but the Log(block not being able to be used for anything but placing seems very underpowered to me.

Well, yeah, i tried to kill two birds with one shot here, see if i could nerf the saw and at the same time solve this problem... But there is no real need for the log block obtained with the saw to be useless except in placement. Could kind of explain why you get 3 planks with the axe and 8 with the saw... 'cause they are working with different things.

The axes vs saws thing is really a hard problem to solve in a nice, simple way. :P

The log piles are used for storage purpose and they work very well. They're not good to build because every pile requires 16 logs to be full and a non-full pile can't have another pile on it.

Instead the logs are used to build houses and other things. But they're not good for storage because every log occupies 1 block space. Bad storage form, but it can be used to make bigger wood storage, then bigger log piles.

I know that Wolf. What i was saying is that you can fit 16 logs in a one block log pile, but you need that same space to place just one of them as a log block.

That is gamification for convenience purposes. Or else we don't need log piles at all, and log placement will sort itself out, kinda.

I know this idea got mentioned a few time before but im bumping this topic in hopes that this tidbit I myself very much want will get implemented. Its annoying as hell when I want to build and keep placing a pile when I want a log and vice versa
