      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Idea for new the awesome new chisel setting you added!

Honestly I would just like to be able to adjust the increments on chiselling. Instead of only having the option to chisel one 'unit' at a time, it'd be nice if you could cycle through one, two, three, four, and five unit increments.

That way you could rapidly create blocks of certain sizes without having to tap it a bunch of times, but you would still need to shape each stone individually. Just with less or more fine control.

Slabs. Use these first, then go into detailed mode.

I admit I didn't think you could even make slabs anymore, let alone detail them. But anyway that doesn't help if you just want to do two, three, or four units depth. Yes it might seem trivial on the surface but if you are trying to do complex detailing over a large project, being able to chisel out two or three units at a time would be a huge time saver and save a lot of lost stone for mistakes.

I guess i should mention that after some discussion, I retract my original denial of copying chiseled blocks

Cool, I think that could lead to an economy with sculptors.

actually it won't, because people can copy any block that's already been created, effectively DESTROYING any possibility of professional sculptors. As soon as a cool block has been created once, any person can copy it. It's like music piracy.

Not if you give it a mechanic similar to forging. Then it might lead to specialisation.

How would that even work?

As with the anvil basically, on a new block, the Mason's table. There are different ways of adding complexity and it should have a higher chance of failure than metal working, because stone is more common. A rough process could be

1. Produce carved block

2. a. Place in scribing table, with markings and paper, to produce the plan.

b. Calculate complexity, this is always going to be highly subjective but an algorithm could be

b.1. Load Object plan into a 3 dimensional array (which may be how carved blocks are stored anyway).

2. Project object along each main axis (in other words make a 2D view) and calculate the ratio of full squares to empty squares, if greater than 1 take the reciprocal. This will give a number between 0 and 1, where 0 is simple and 1 is complex.

3. Add the 3 views together, a number between 0 and 3 (Value x).

4. Calculate the ratio of empty space in the whole block and if greater than 1 take the reciprocal. (Value y).

5. Multiply x by y to get an overall complexity, form these values into bands to produce an initial handicap from easy to very difficult (narrowing the target window). This will help form the equivalent of the reduction in durability on forged items BUT will actually be the chance of total loss when the completed block is removed from the table.

6. Using y by itself is an indicator of how much work is to be put in and therefore how many hits you get to reach the window. (This stops people just doing the lightest hits all the way)

3. Place virgin block in Mason's Table along with the plan, hammer and chisel, use a GUI similar to forging but only moving one way (you can't add stone).

4. Using a combination of differently weighted hits remove material until within the target window. Take too many hits and lose the block or worse get a pile of gravel you now have to dispose of.

5. When in the target area, the distance to the actual ideal point is proportional to the chance of total loss when trying to remove the block (a random chance to account for unseen defects in the stone)

Different hardnesses of stone could alter the above mechanics, as could the tier of metal.

A poor mason would use more durability on a chisel/ hammer and lose more blocks of stone, making it more likely to encourage specialisation without adding 'skill' levels.

Plans should be have durability to reduce uses and should only be copyable by placing a block in the scribing table as above. This gives plans an intrinsic value, meaning that if someone made a column section it may be worth churning out many plans from the initial block, however, if someone creates the Venus de Milo it would be in their interest to deliberately use up some of the durability before selling the plan on, to increase the rarity.

Hope this is clear enough.

Congrats to Exanadu.

I am happy that the feature was implemented, but why are you congratulating Exanadu? I mean, sure he made a thread about it, but it has been discussed multiple times before. And anyway, an idea is a concept, not individual to one person.

Yea, point taken. I wasn't aware this had been discussed before. Having read briefly through this thread I knew that OP would be happy to see this come to light.

Bioxx/Dunk did all the work and most of all, we all benefit.

It's exciting to see a great mod like this continually grow.
