      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Another Use For Saplings

11 posts in this topic

I was just playing TFC and thought to myself... jeez I have a lot of extra saplings, wish I could burn them.

That's when I came up with the idea of using saplings in a fire pit to create smoke signals. So I searched in the forums and saw that there was a post that spoke briefly about using charcoal pits as smoke signals. However, I'm not talking so much about a visual representation of smoke signals, but more as a way to mark things in the world. Somewhat similar to Rei's Minimap's waypoint.

Rather than creating a huge column of smoke, the smoke signals would actually create an icon in screen, as shown in these photos:

Up Close

Farther Away

To keep this feature from being to op, there would be some constraints on it. First, the smoke signal will not last forever. Each sapling loaded into the fire pit would only extend the smoke signal's life a certain extent. To balance this feature there would of course have to be a way to load more than four saplings at a time, perhaps with a different max limit.

The other constraint would be the distance you would be able to see the marker. The farther you get away from it the more it fades until it disappears completely. In which case you would either have to turn around and return to your starting point, or create another smoke stack to mark your way.

Interesting. Though I prefer the smoke stacks rather than waypoints (unless they were in place of the smoke for performance reasons).

That was my thinking. Also the fact that not everyone has a computer capable of supporting the largest render distance. I figured with the waypoints it evens things out in that regard. I also should mention that I don't think that the smoke signal markers should have any other information on them such as distance or anything.

I think you just leave the waypoints to reysminimap. Unless... there should be 2 things to balance that. Like you said waypoints only last so long and the other.... that they have a distance issue... in other worse go so far and the way point disappears.

I say this because I don't use reysminimap.... for that reason. I think that in the real world you didn't have "waypoints" so why should I need waypoints, but then again I use far rendering. Wish I could use extreme with optifine, but that's beyond my computing power at the moment.

Thanks for the feedback!

Also, some people in the forums really, really don't like it when you double post. I personally have no beef against it, but I would recommend using the edit button if you need to change/add something to a post, rather than double posting.

No biggie, most people don't know until they've been informed. :)
