Adding (/i /give) sub blocks

So goggle doesn't seem to be turning up results so I figure I better ask here.

I need to add (via /Give or /i) some sub blocks to set up NPC traders such as Magnetite, Gems etc.

I've noticed TFC uses a lot of Sub blocks for stuff like Gems and Ore (so all ore is the same ID as copper but with a moddifier)

I've tired TMI, I've tried /Give ID Modifier and everything else I can think of but I always just end up with the Main Block (Flawed Gem or Copper ore).

Even TMi doesn't seem to want to work properly.

How do I manually add these sub blocks?

Don't use TMI... use NEI.

Didn't even know there was a NEI =p

Last time I used an Item mod I used TMI so just went with what I know (but it breaks the anvil interface!)

Yeah, I guess not everyone knows about it yet. I'm just surprised, since almost every Youtuber I watched the last 6 months has it installed, so I assumed people knew about it. Also, NEI is so much more than just an item giving mod, I always use it when playing TFC, to look up certain recipes and such, without using the cheat functions (except for that one time a bug destroyed an ingots).
