      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Salt Water

6 posts in this topic

This is very simple: replace liquid water in the ocean with a salt water liquid that works similarly to water, except cannot be used to refill your thirst and will not hydrate plants.

It seems trivial to implement (it just means creating a clone of the water code and adding a few lines to the hydrate and thirst refill code, then adding it to terrain gen) and it would promote finding lakes or rivers for starting a civilization like irl.

Also, salt water could then be used for pickling/curing in the future.

If it would be implemented it would be quite nice, forcing you to have to find fresh water to survive(considering dying of thirst is almost impossible in TFC because all you have to do is splash around), this could also tie in with some sort of water purification, such as if you drink water straight from the body of water you have a chance of getting sick(poisoned, nauseated, slowed), making you want to purify your water later on(you could also purify salt water if you wish to drink it)

Maybe ways to collect fresh water from rain or sugar cane?

Maybe vines in the jungle also can supply some water.

The easiest way to do this would be to have different items representing water, ie bucket of salt water vs bucket of freshwater and then just assume that any water interacted with in an ocean biome is saltwater. I don't know how we'd handle placed saltwater though.

saltwater has the same properties as regular water, aside that it slowly DRAINS thirst and hunger instead of filling thirst (you do get more hungry at sea) however you can boil it to gain access to steam and the salt itself, which could be used as a spice in food :D
