      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

ore grades (nerfing large ore bodies)

ok its been awhile and i may have missed this so call me out if this was already suggested

basically we add a meta data layer to ore. ore will now fallow a scale of "purity" on a 1 - 10 scale. the ore deposit could be massive, but the grade of the ore could be low, making it a little harder to smelt and you would likely gain a lower amount of the intended metal. other metals like copper, lead, zinc and bismuth would randomly be by products of this. the higher the grade of the ore the fewer the impurities.

a possible means of determining the "grade" of an ore body could be by 1. integrating a measurement system into the pro pick or by adding something called a blow pipe. blow pipes are used on small pieces of ore that are than mixed with charcoal and placed in the end of the pipe. the pipe is blown into and colors created in the fire from the burning ore are used to find out the amount of impurities within.

this was just an idea that could use a little work, thanks any ways

Metadata, as far as I'm aware, is already used to determine ore type.

Still, though, I kinda like the idea of their being impurities in ore... Though, it should be really small, not something you can rely on to give more then an ingot or two from hundreds of ore rocks, if you're lucky.

I also really like that blow pipe idea, really creative piece of simple technology...

To be honest I think this would make TFC too complicated in my opinion.

Still, though, I kinda like the idea of their being impurities in ore... Though, it should be really small, not something you can rely on to give more then an ingot or two from hundreds of ore rocks, if you're lucky.

I also really like that blow pipe idea, really creative piece of simple technology...

yea that was my idea as well

have the impurities that would cause some sort of minor inconvenience but not break the way metals are extracted

one of the other simple ideas i had was to perhaps have ore veins spawn vertically underground instead of strange bulky blobs that you currently find. just does not seem right from a geologic stand point as ores often form along faults

Thing is: unless by mining particular vein you're losing more metal in durability than getting back in ore, there's no real reason to even check how pure this thing is - you need it regardless.
