      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

All about stone layers and Ore searching

7 posts in this topic

Hello, first topic I try to make, Thanks for your attention!

I've seen a lot of tpcs over ore and mineral searching, and this is an attempt to start a wide discussion on layer/ore related thinking

Let's start with the basics, for helping the newbyes The Wiki link!!

http://terrafirmacraft.com/wiki/Ores_%26_Minerals

So, understand that? No? Well, happened to me first time too...

Just, so many stone, where to look so? where's copper, tin, Bismuth an all those ore?

In fact it's not easy to find it!

I'll get the starter to stablish some terms just for easy understanding of everyone

layers are top-middle-bottom (try to refer all of them)

please refer the y-cordinate

refer the searching-prospecting method (like digging straitgh or cave diving, why did you dug there?)

Let's be helpfull to noobs! :P We all have been sometime!

Share your miner stories!!

Here is mine, !

Most of the top layers of basalt I've found in the game are plenty of native copper!

(usually non copper bearing on the mid-bott)

It's just a matter of marking where you find the small nuggets and dig down in the middle of the area, prospect a little if you don't manage to dig right on the thing after digging 20-25 stone (y120-125) assuming you're near 144y surface

Tetrahedrite is everywhere and likely your first source of copper. Next you need tin from cassiterite to make Bronze... Just realised from a footnote in the tables that cassiterite is only at the surface in Granite rock. D'oh! Deep underground in igneous rocks too but much less accessible or easy to find.

I'm really glad that you saw the footnote! From your opinion, is the asterix marking it obvious enough, or should we make that footnote marker more obvious in some way? Bolding, different color, etc.

The footnote is technically correct usage, but I admit I overlooked it the first time at a quick glance. I spend a good hour hitting dacite rocks at the surface not finding cassiterite. Then i went back to have a look if i missed something (which i did).

Maybe adding another line after "...to produce unshaped metal" above the table may add clarification. Such as: "Please note, some ores like cassiterite may be present in certain rock types but only at greater depth (layers 2 and 3)."

By the way, can garnierite be found in layer 1  of gabbro (the surface layer) now? This would be technically correct because garnierite is a product of lateritic weathering of ultramafic rocks. I remember that previously it was only layers 2 and 3 (and most prominently at the bottom of layer 2) in gabbro. If there were any changes to the distribution of garnierite, I would like to know. In my old game finding this stuff really was the bane of grinding.

i've always found the starter metals about y=128, then the better ones at y=65 and lower. coal and lapis and cinnabar are y=65.

i've got (and harvested) TONS of lapis too... what am i to do with this? make a blue man kingdom?

i've gotten garnierite too... y=65 in gabbro
