      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Magic or.. No magic?

8 posts in this topic

After a recent comment I made.  I wondered about the rest of the TFC community and what their opinions were on magic IF it were added to  TFC.

Firstly I think no because if you like magic and blocks go play Minecraft.  Its not fit for TFC.

So... whats your opinion? Magic or no Magic?

I'm not against magic and magical effects, so long as the process is given the same depth as other systems TFC. Mostly what I like about TFC isn't its adherence to physical laws, so much as its respect for the depth of the systems it implements.

There's another mod called Thaumcraft which adds a pretty in-depth magic system which requires a great deal of work (to make magic work and to research it) and I think is pretty interesting. Mystcraft is surprisingly in-depth and involves a lot of work to play with. Both handle the subject of 'magic' as they should; as a function of natural laws that happen to be different from our own and can be manipulated by the player, rather than just cool effects attached to items or whatever.

Normally I'd say to just mix whatever mods you prefer, but TFC has a way of not working with many other mods due to how it handles worldgen. Not to mention that recipes relying on vanilla resources tend to break in ways big and small. So y'know. I could go either way for TFC. Whatever Bioxx and Dunk prefer is fine with me.

MAGICK ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN IN TFC

Even if Dunk doesn't plan to add anything magical to base TFC, that's no reason to completely shut down the discussion. There are plenty of talented people on the forums who might be interested in making a magic-based add-on.

I've always loved Thaumcraft for its depth and style, having some of the best aesthetic and function of any mod since 1.2.5. Depending on how Thaumcraft 4 feels, I may end up making a straight compatibility addon for TFC with it.

A few ideas would be making the Greatwood trees not their own tree, but a variant of existing trees. You might find a Greatwood Hickory, or a Silverwood Chestnut. A tree would randomly spawn these properties as often as Thaumcraft would make the normal ones.

Vis ore is debatable. (Anyone care to chime in?)

Maybe spawns in clusters like ores, or in caves similar to stalagmites, not actually in ore form.

There's a lot to it, but it would be a neat project for those that enjoy both mods, like myself.

I think making some stalagmites/stalactites be the big vis crystals, glowing in the dark (slightly moodier than redstone torch) is a good idea. Would look pretty in these big caves. And far as I can tell there shouldn't be that many vis ore to hold the balance in the chunk, so usual TFC cave situation should provide enough possibilities for crystals to form.

Ahem. As you can probably tell, I'm not against magic. I just kinda want it to be interesting process, not just "make an expencive ring - now you can fly" (we all know where that's from).
