There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Help finding graphite

46 posts in this topic

Ok i've been looking for days for graphite, i gave up and i've been looking for graphite in creative mode with ore tracking. Still nothing, what gives?

Is there any detector that can detect graphite block ID: meta?

I have no idea where to look for it. Marble nothing, gneiss, quartz, schist nothing.

I think graphite does not spawn on my server. :(

This is entirely luck based. It is possible that area you are in has no graphite. You just need to look in other area.

I dug over 20km of tunnels in stuff that is supposed to have it! There should not be luck involved.

I want a damn ore detector that can pick up graphite.

I found over 10 kaolinite deposits, which is supposed to be rare. That only because i was near borders where it appears.

I personally have found more kaolinite than I can use, but not a trace of graphite so OP's question here is relevent to my interests.

I've actually found garnierite, gold and silver in significant quantities as well, but have no way to advance up the metal progression without the damn graphite. I guess it's just a balancing issue with the rarity, so go figure.

Rarity needs rebalancing, i don't mind not finding useless ores, but useful things should have ways. Or at least exist.

Or we need alternatives. Historically, fireclay was not made but mined at depth, often found underlying coal seams as stuff called 'seatearth.'

Actually, making fire clay out of graphite sounds anachronistic, and you can't really use it except in anoxic applications, due to the fact that graphite —pure carbon— has a nasty tendency to burn.

Graphite does spawn and I have found it in huge veins, and in small veins of like 4. You just have to be patient and look.

how did you manage to find 10 veins of kaolinite if you're looking in the rocks that spawn graphite? >_>

I tend to wander off to a bit further when one rock ends to see if i can find anything useful when i'm down there.

So is there any ore detector i can use to find graphite, because i'm 99% sure it does not spawn on my server.

I've been digging for days with creative mode and automap ore radar, still nothing!

I FOUND GRAPHITE!

Here's how.

1. Walk around LOT and LOT and LOT and LOT of land on your minecraft server.

2. Copy folder that contain level.dat (mine was cpy server so folder name was cpy) copy it to save folder in your %appdata% (.minecraft/save)

3. Download MCEdit if you dont have.

4. MCEditMCEdit-0.1.7.1.win-amd64library.zip contain pymclevelminecraft.yaml file

5. Add this to the bottom of the file and save it, 2097 is my default ID from Ore2

  - id: 2097   idStr: graphite   name: Graphite   mapcolor: [255, 128, 79]   tex: [4, 0]   data:   4:   name: Graphite   tex: [4, 0]

6. open MCEdit your saved level

7. select area (expand height with shift) and press analyze, if you see any graphite 2097:4 hold shift and reduce sides by shift clicking side, (reduce left first, reanalyze see if there still is graphite)

8. repeat until you find quite small area that you can dig out.

9. zoom in MC edit hold ctrl, write down coordinates for area

10. start digging on your server!

It took me about 1 000 000 000 blocks of analyzing to find it!

*snip*

And here I was hoping you found a non-cheaty way to do it. Oh well, back to the mines.

I found around 1000 graphite in 1 000 000 000 blocks that is 1ppm. So good luck with that. If you could dig 1 block in 2 seconds you will find 1 graphite in 23 days of nothing but digging.

snippy, snip, snip.

So how far off did you end up being while you were mining?

I was off about 1-40km. I tp a lot to new positions to find new spots. Nothing gets even close to finding graphite.

I've found that kaolinite is a lot more common but the vein size is less variable. I've found like 10 different kaolinite veins and like 2 graphite veins. Each kaolinite vein was large and had about 4 stacks. I found a graphite vein that was 3 double chests large. Also I believe kaolinite spawns in more rocks. Basically to find this kind of thing you'll have to properly branch mine the right rock using a prop pick.

I have no kaolinite yet, but I got graphite.

I found around 1000 graphite in 1 000 000 000 blocks that is 1ppm. So good luck with that. If you could dig 1 block in 2 seconds you will find 1 graphite in 23 days of nothing but digging.

on that I would say that the calculation is bad.

1. You do not neet to mine every single block if you use the pro pick

2. you do not need to check at every level. I am not sure about the layer it can spawn, but you will most likely not find it on top level.

You can check 15 625 blocks with propick. But you still need to dig tunnel. To be safe you need to dig 35,60,85 layers to hit lower ores, where rare things are common. 1 miliard blocks would be 256x 3 906 250 block layers. So you need to dig only 3 layers every 25 blocks thats 1980m long tunnels over 1980m wide area, so you can avoid it by just digging every 25m so you need 79 x 1980m tunnels at 3 different depths. So to check 1 miliard chunk area you need to dig 469 260 blocks. 1.8seconds for each blocks, but you need to dig 2x so you can walk through it (assuming you don't use smart moving) this means 1 689 336 seconds of digging or 469,26 hours or 19,5525 days of pure strip mining. 1 407 bronze pickaxes broken, you need to check 4x every 25m so you can be sure you are not hitting fakes so you only need 21 propicks.

Fun eh? FUN FUN FUN!

I would say my calculations are CORRECT!

Or you could get 470 people doing strip mine from all directions! You could find that graphite without cheats in 1 measly hour!

That it getting closer and closer to a good calculation. Now you only need to not take into account all the digging in rock types that can not spawn the ore you are looking for. Only 17% of the rock can contain graphite, all the other stone can be skipped.

Still a lot of digging.

You don't know what rock is where, so you still need to dig through it, unless you have tons of ladders.

between digging a useless 2k long tunnel or making a 3x3 staircase, i would make a 3x3 staircase

With regards to sinking mine shafts in various locations, do the lower rocks layers change in the same place as the upper layer?

I don't think so, i think it's all random.

Alice:

The only problem with the "useless 2k long tunnel" is that you don't know it is useless. At what point do you stop digging the tunnel and try another staircase, and how far away? I am not sure if the sluices will return minerals as well as ores but if so, that would be a viable option to the tunnel. You could use the sluice underground every 400 blocks or so. If this is not a current option, it needs to be.

CPY:

You said you found 1,000 blocks of graphite in 1,000,000,000 blocks. Why would you need 1,000 pieces of graphite? You need 20 per crucible. Even if you got crazy and made 5 crucibles, that is only 100 graphite you need. So you can reduce your dig time to 1.95 days. That is still a lot, but it is doable. I have found 6 graphite veins through other methods and they were all at level 60. Not sure if that is coincidence or if that is how Bioxx made it more rare than before.

Let's say you have to dit 300 blocks to get a staircase from level 160 to level 60, it's a 150 block long tunnel worth of mining. So if you mine a shaft distanced by more than 150 blocks, you digg less. So let's say every 500 and you can tunnel in any direction if you have the right stone.

I think you just dig one staircase down until you hit layer 60 in the stone type you want then you branch mine with your branches 25m apart. No sense in digging more staircases when you don't know where in the rock layer you will find something.
