      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Coal, Peat, and Turf: The beginning of Pit-Coke

8 posts in this topic

Coke derived from coal, peat, and a turf covering is its first recorded way of creating coke. It functions similarly to the charcoal pit but cokes' higher carbon content and low impurity helps enhance the chemical reaction which happens in the steel making process.

Coke was used to help create larger blast furnaces which charcoal could not manage, and burn hotter and brighter than charcoal.

I believe that coke would be a great addition to later game manufactory and although it enters the fringe of the TFC, especially since advancements in coke making (Beehive oven) did not occur till the 1700s, the earliest process (pit-coke) is a more plausible.

in current version we have to put lots of log to create a charcoal. How do you suggest to place lots of turf to make the coke? There is no special storage for turf. :(

But i have to agree with you: it should be a use of turf in the game.  B)

Turf refers to soil cover, the same way that it is use in a charcoal pit. You would cover the mixture of coal and peat with the turf and let it cook till the peat cooks off leaving behind the coke chunks.

I wonder, would it just be the same mechanics as charcoal pit and would we have to place peat and coal like log piles?

Yeah, something like Charcoal pit, maybe even a Block that contains 3 Slots for Peat and 1 slot for Coal.

Makes sense, but I would want to see some more differences from the charcoal pit then the block

I would suggest making a new recipe for a Coal/Peat (or whatever its called later on) block. It would be an appropriate mixture of both (3 to 1 or 1 to 1 or whatever) which can be used in a structure similar to a charcoal pit. It's not like you can put anything into such a pit so you will get charcoal...

I was thinking of a placable block which could be loaded would be loaded with 32 to 64 coal and 8 to 16 peat three times (unless they change the GUI to have two slots), kinda like a log-pile. That would be stacked like in a charcoal pit and cooked. There would be a greater than 50% loss of output but the coke would be usable in smelting and put out more heat.
