      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Farming without movable water

5 posts in this topic

A few posts into THIS: http://terrafirmacraft.com/f/topic/4735-agriculture-question-not-on-wiki/

thread discussion started about getting water for crops/moving water.

It took me some time to figure out how to get the copper to make my first saw and having a steady food supply was kinda important to get started quickly so I used a method (documented here) I was shown a long time ago for Vanilla which still works for TFC.

Find a decent sized water source (coastline near the ocean, or a river/pond with a long enough shore for your needs)

http://s20.postimg.org/rx2n0o5lp/image.png

Straighten out one bank of a river (or the shore of an ocean). Do this by removing corner blocks that have water touching at least 2 sides so they will fill the empty space with a new source block. Trying to alternate which blocks you dig or get fancy will more than likely muck it up so just be patient and clear dirt/sand one corner at a time as fixing flowing water blocks can be their own PITA puzzle otherwise.

Clear an area 4 blocks wide from the edge of the water (more if you want space for a shelter or path etc and till the 4 block wide swath so its marked out and can hydrate etc.

Then leave a 1 wide strip of water and bring the ground up level on the other side of it out to 5 blocks.

The inner 4 blocks are of course the other half of the farmland. The 5th is to allow you to place torches for lighting, and or walls or fences for protection. This extra block also helps during harvesting to prevent crops falling into the ocean.

Note:

1: You must be careful you don't  start filling in the water  strip accidentally or it can get messy to replace the water block.

2: If your using ocean shores in TFC it can take quite a bit of dirt to fill in this much ocean so hopefully you have already flattened a hill to make a tree farm or cleared dirt to build a mine or something before hand.

My finished variant:

Because I needed a good food supply fast, I started with the landward half of this plot (and the two others like it around the peninsula I live on) and as my terraforming and mining produced dirt used it to fill in the other halves.

Crop selection was initially anything I had, then one colour grouping per field once I had enough seeds, and now each shelter has a single chest for seeds of each group and now I plant one group in all fields and harvest it whenever I get back from whatever thing Ive been working on at my other bases or outposts.

-> Lilly pads mean i can move back and forth at will while harvesting or fighting things coming out of the water to try and eat me,

-> thatch can float in the air so they hold yet more torches (with poor eyesight I like things to be very bright and easy to see

-> sugarcane, when lit by torches makes a huge glowing wall that can be seen for miles which helps find my way home sometimes when Im out foraging.

-> this plot is 32 blocks long exactly so I can plant 2 stacks of seeds in each half (way over kill probably for many but having to mess with farming stuff less often means more time to dig or explore etc.

-> Oh and the shack also has weapon racks under the roof that hold spare tools and weapons since I never know when replacements will be needed or hungry things might try to eat me.

You wrote a great guide Rkaneus!  This definately the way to farm.

Prior to B77, I used to farm underground in a self-sustaining underground base. Mobs and SMP thieves are annoying. You can still build forges and farms underground in B77 with a line of sight to the sky if you use a farmland block (and a trap door for support) since these won't obstruct the line of sight.  I find underground pig farms to be a simpler source of food.  They are simple and provide ample pork chops.

Thumbs up Rkaneus. B)

If you're on the coast, I suggest building a layer of thatch 1block underwater and putting your dirt on top. You use much fewer materials this way.

Would you mind explaining that? I don't get it. Maybe a screenshot or two?

@Tsuarok this is true so I shall have to remember it for the future. In this first case however I was also using the construction of the farms to consume several large hills worth of dirt rather than continuously filling additional chests/vessals with it as I terraformed around my first main base and opened up mines.

What uses does everyone use for copious amounts of dirt?
