      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Clay Molds Bug

9 posts in this topic

Hi there, I'm quite new to TFC and am totally converted already. However, I've noticed what could be a bug in the way clay is used to make molds. I searched a few subforums, but couldn't find anything related, so here it is:

It's understood that when knapping rocks, you lose one rock even if you make a mistake. Fair enough. However, the same applies to clay; if you make a mistake, you lose 5 pieces because they are deducted before you begin. Surely clay is malleable enough to be worked and reworked until you are happy with it?

A possible suggestion is to be able to re-add squares when in the 5x5 clay window. Clicking to hollow out the mold, clicking again if you make a mistake. Or maybe just deduct the 5 clay after completing a correct mold.

If this is a suggestion for a minor fix, then I would recommend moving your suggestion into the suggestions forum. I do not know about clay molding, so you might want to get another response from someone who knows clay molding. I apologize.

Also,

Side Note: It is unfortunate that I don't see veteran members introducing newcomers  in this way, anymore...

Thanks, Sda  :)

I wasn't sure if a bugfix belonged in suggestions.

You're welcome, though I'm going by a literal definition for your bugfix suggestion. I think it is more of a tweak, than a bug, actually, because if the clay molding feature is working fine, but it requires some fine tuning, then that would be a tweak. On the contrary, if the clay molding feature has a few unintended side effects, then that would be a bug.

being able to add clay back on seems too easy, but I might be able to make it so 5 clay squares = 1 clay, where the 25 tiles is all 5 pieces. Basically, for every multiple of 5 you remove, you lose a chunk of clay. Possibly make it remove it as soon as you start to work it. So if there are 24/25 tiles remaining, you would have 4 clay if you exited the GUI. 20/25? still 4 clay. 19/25? 3 clay left. At least you wouldn't lose all the clay that way, while still having a penalty for removing some of it (otherwise it would be virtually impossible to lose clay when making vessels, as only 4 tiles need to be removed)

But Dunk, as he said, you can't really "lose" clay when you work it. I've worked with clay, you can destroy your creation to get clay again as long as it wasn't dryed/fired.

the loss of clay is non negotiable. I'm saying it could be toned back though.

Can we get a reverse recipes for unfired clay products then? I'm not asking "for myself" here, but it's good for consistency. You can make it return less than was used to make the product to discourage mistakes still.

You know, like when you put unfired vessel in the crafting grid and get 3 clay balls back.

Reducing the loss of clay would definitely be preferable to losing all 5 pieces, but to me it just seemed to make more sense to deduct the 5 pieces once you were happy with the layout. Clay is malleable by its very nature, it just doesn't make sense for any to disappear.

Maybe clay could dry out if stored improperly?
