      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Surface ores

9 posts in this topic

So I've played TFC for a bit and on multiple worlds i can't find any surface ores, I had tried this in a much earlier build and it never gave me any then either, yet everyone i see gets them easy, so can i get any advice?

Just break every rock on the surface you see. If you are looking for copper, check the wiki to see what stones Native Copper spawns in. (Example: Basalt) That way there is the chance of both tetrahedrite and native copper spawning, doubling your chances of finding surface copper.

I'd suggest moving to a new area and trying again then. If after breaking 3 stacks of rocks you still have nothing, it is likely that there isn't an ore vein in that area. Breaking rocks will only yield small ores on the surface if there is a vein of the larger ores down below.

uhauhauahuah

you probably started in a gabbro surface layer, there's mostly nothing on that, Iron bearing rocks like chalk or conglomerate can be very sterile too...

But if you look for surface basalt near some surface granite, you're the bronzeman!

I actually found my bismuthinite vein in a gabbro surface layer... within a few minutes of searching.

It's honestly all luck. I mean, in contrast to that I spent (according to the statistics screen) 28 RL hours worth of playtime, spread out over more than one week, just trying to find fluxstone. There are 23 different stones in TFC, and 4 of them are fluxstones. I managed to find 18 out of 19 non-flux stone types before I finally hit dolomite. At that point I had 100 km walked, 20 km by boat, 18,500 leaf blocks broken and 1100 ladders constructed (for digging shafts down to check lower layers).

Without flux, you cannot process hides into leather, and you cannot perform any sort of smithing whatsoever. So I basically spent more than one ingame year walking around with no armor, only using stone and cast metal tools, in a world locked to Hardcore difficulty. Fun for the whole family. Quite a few very close calls, I tell you...
